Never remove or deface a manufacturer label. An unlabeled container is a hazard to everyone else in the salon and to any emergency responder.

Secondary containers. When you decant a product — monomer into a dappen dish, acetone into a pump bottle, disinfectant concentrate into a jar — the receiving container must be labeled with at least the product identifier and the hazard information. 4. Prohibited Materials and Substances

The outline pairs SDS with prohibited materials and substances, and the honest answer is that "prohibited" comes from several different authorities, which is exactly what makes it a good exam question.

  • Federal (FDA). The FDA removed nail products containing 100% methyl methacrylate (MMA) from the market in the 1970s after consumer injury reports, treating them as poisonous and deleterious in that use.
  • State cosmetology boards. Many states — Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Wisconsin among them — wrote explicit MMA prohibitions into their rules. Georgia's Chapter 240 rules do not name MMA. What Georgia does prohibit by name are the skin-removal implements in Rule 240-4-.03(8): razor-type callus shavers, credo blades, cutters, scrapers, graters, and anything that abrades or removes layers of skin.
  • PSI test-day rules. On the practical test, monomer must be factory-sealed and labeled by the manufacturer as "low odor" or "odorless," product not meeting that requirement is not allowed into the testing room, and absolutely no aerosols are permitted in the testing area.
  • Scope of practice. Rule 240-4-.03(1) requires a licensee to provide only those services they are qualified by education, experience, and skill to perform within recognized professional standards — which is how a Georgia board reaches conduct involving an unsuitable product even without naming the product.

Answer a "prohibited" question by identifying which authority the question is asking about. A statement that is true of the FDA is not automatically true of a Georgia rule.


5. Labeling on Practical Test Day

PSI turns all of this into observable behaviour:

  • Labeling on products must be in large print, legible, and clearly visible for the evaluator to observe.
  • Chemical products that would be required to be listed on an SDS in an actual business must be used from the original container with an original manufacturer's label attached, or from a container with the manufacturer's label attached.
  • Products not classified as dangerous chemicals by OSHA, and therefore not required on a business SDS, may be fictitious — a self-created or actual label attached to a container, with another substance inside to simulate the product.
  • Disinfectant containers must have the manufacturer's label attached and legible, and the disinfectant used must have virucidal, bactericidal, and fungicidal properties listed on the manufacturer's label.

The logic is consistent: anything genuinely hazardous is real and really labeled; anything harmless may be simulated but must still be labeled, because labeling itself is the competency being assessed.
