PSI National Nail Technician Theory Test: Blueprint and Strategy

Georgia licensure requires passing two separate PSI tests. This section covers the theory test; section 9.4 covers the practical.

The Georgia Board of Cosmetology and Barbering has contracted with PSI Services LLC to deliver the PSI National Barber/Cosmetology Testing Program. The nail credential's written component is the PSI National Nail Technician Theory Test, and Georgia's current version is NAIL TECH v1.1, effective 8/1/2025.

1. The Hard Facts

[!IMPORTANT] The 5 non-scored experimental items are indistinguishable from scored items and exist so PSI can validate future questions. You cannot identify them, so treat every question as scored. Their existence is also why you should not panic over one strange-looking item.

2. The Content Outline — Study Where the Items Are

This is the published Georgia Nail Technician Theory Content Outline. Read the right-hand column before you plan a single study session.

The single most useful fact about this test: half of it is safety and infection control. Candidates consistently over-prepare enhancement technique and under-prepare disinfection contact times, single-use classification, SDS structure, electrical safety, and water temperature. If you have ten hours to study, five of them belong in topic area 1.

Notice too that safety runs through the other three areas. Topic 3 is titled Skin Care but every sub-topic begins with the word "safe." Topic 4 is titled Nail Care and its first four sub-topics all begin with "safe." In practice, well over half the test rewards a safety-first answer.

4. Reading the Question

Priority qualifiers — FIRST, INITIAL, IMMEDIATELY, BEST, MOST IMPORTANT, PRIMARY. These signal that several options are things you would legitimately do, and the test wants the one that comes first. On this exam the chronologically first action is almost always the one that stops harm: stop the service, remove the hazard, protect the person. Documentation, notification, and clean-up come after.

Negative qualifiers — NOT, EXCEPT, LEAST, NEVER, PROHIBITED. Three options will be correct statements and one will be false. Read each option and label it true or false rather than hunting for the answer; the odd one out is then obvious.

Numeric precision. This test rewards exact figures, so do not round in your head: implement immersion is 10 minutes; pedicure disinfection after each client is at least 15 minutes; the end-of-day flush is 10 minutes of hot water; the weekly bleach treatment is one teaspoon of 5.25% bleach per gallon circulated 5 to 10 minutes; a sharps container is disposed of at three-fourths full; a patch test is read at 24 to 48 hours.

Watch the authority. A recurring trap distinguishes what the FDA did, what OSHA requires, what Georgia's Chapter 240 rules say, and what PSI's test-day rules impose. These are four different sources and a statement true of one is often false of another. When a question names an authority, answer for that authority.

Terminology precision. The test uses anatomical terms, not salon slang: eponychium (living tissue at the base, never cut) versus cuticle (dead tissue on the plate, may be removed); hyponychium (seal under the free edge); matrix (growth centre); lunula; onychomycosis; paronychia; onycholysis (distal separation) versus onychomadesis (proximal shedding); tinea pedis.

5. Distractor Elimination

1. Eliminate anything that harms a client. In a four-option nail-theory item, at least one distractor usually describes something actively unsafe — cutting living tissue, working over an infection, using a banned implement, hot water on a neuropathic foot.
2. Eliminate polar absolutes — "always," "never," "all," "under no circumstances" — unless the absolute is one you can source to a rule. Some absolutes here are genuinely true ("never cut the eponychium"), so this heuristic is a tie-breaker, not a rule.
3. Eliminate options that require diagnosis. A nail technician may not diagnose or recommend treatment. Any option where the technician names a disease or recommends a medication is wrong on scope alone.
4. Eliminate the shortcut. Where one option saves time and another follows procedure, the procedural answer wins.
5. Between two survivors, choose the one that protects the client.

6. What PSI Says to Study

PSI also sells an official online practice test through psionlinestore.com and states plainly that it is the only official PSI practice test and that PSI does not recognize or endorse any other study guide for the National Cosmetology Program. Use this guide and any other resource to learn the material, then use the outline above — not a third-party question bank — as your checklist of what must be known.

7. After the Test

Results arrive by email within 48 hours and are transmitted electronically to the Board. If a discrepancy is found during PSI's comment review, PSI may re-evaluate a test taker's result and adjust it. For a duplicate score report, contact PSI Customer Service. Eligibility for testing lasts 4 years from the date of course completion for courses completed after July 1, 2018, with unlimited retakes in that window; a candidate who has not passed within 4 years must re-apply to the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology and Barbers.
