The exam does not ask you to name a theorist from a definition. It gives you a planning problem and asks which design decision a theory predicts will work. That distinction is the difference between a passing and a failing approach to this content.

Treat each theory as a prediction engine: it tells you what will happen to learning if you arrange the lesson a certain way.

Behaviorism in Practice: What FTCE Items Actually Test

The most commonly tested behaviorist ideas are reinforcement versus punishment and schedules of reinforcement. Positive reinforcement adds something to increase a behavior; negative reinforcement removes an aversive condition to increase a behavior. Both increase behavior. Punishment decreases it. A teacher who lets a class skip the warm-up because they entered quietly is using negative reinforcement, not a reward.

Continuous reinforcement (reinforcing every occurrence) builds a new behavior fastest. Intermittent or variable-ratio reinforcement makes an established behavior most resistant to extinction. That is why a token board is faded to occasional praise rather than dropped abruptly.

  • Erikson's psychosocial stages matter for age-appropriate design: industry versus inferiority (roughly grades 1-6) makes visible competence and completed work powerful, while identity versus role confusion (adolescence) makes choice, voice, and authentic audience powerful.
