For GMDSS ships, 156.525 MHz (Channel 70) is the DSC calling frequency for distress, safety, and general communications; the Channel 16 watch remains so that ships not fitted with DSC can still call GMDSS ships.

Channel 16 is a voice watch, not a DSC watch. Counting Channel 16 as one of the DSC channels is the standard error. 6 MHz DSC (6312 kHz) can be the “other HF” choice; it is not a substitute for the required 8 MHz (8414.5 kHz) watch. Satellite GMDSS ships also keep a watch for shore-to-ship distress alerts on the Inmarsat earth station under 80.1123(a)(4), which is additional to the terrestrial DSC list, not a replacement for Channel 70.

On receipt of a DSC distress alert, 80.1123(d) requires the ship to set watch on the radiotelephone distress frequency associated with the DSC frequency that carried the alert.
