Mechanics, Consistency, Intensity

CrossFit's charter for developing an athlete is a strict ordering:

  1. Mechanics — the ability to move with sound technique through the full range with an appropriate load.
  2. Consistency — the ability to reproduce that technique rep after rep, session after session, and under fatigue.
  3. Intensity — power output, added only once the first two are established.

The ordering is not a suggestion; it is a safety and effectiveness argument. Adding intensity to inconsistent mechanics produces two outcomes: injury, and the rapid ingraining of a faulty motor pattern. Fast repetition of a bad pattern is the most efficient way to make it permanent.

The rule that follows is the one a CCFT applies dozens of times per class: when mechanics fail, intensity comes off. Not at the end of the round, not after the set — immediately. Strip the bar, cut the reps, or stop the athlete. This is not punishment and should never be delivered as such; the athlete is told exactly what you saw and exactly what changes.

The hierarchy is also cyclical, not one-time. Every new movement, every new load, and every new rep scheme resets the athlete to mechanics. An athlete with excellent squat consistency at 185 lb is back at mechanics the first time they see 245 lb, and back at mechanics again the first time they see a barbell overhead.

Threshold Training

The content outline names "teach the relationship between technique and intensity (i.e., threshold training)". Threshold training is deliberately working at the boundary where technique is about to degrade — close enough to the line to drive adaptation, not so far past it that quality collapses.

Why work near the line at all? Because staying comfortably below it under-trains the athlete, which is a real and under-diagnosed problem. An athlete who never approaches their technical threshold never expands it.

How it is coached, in practice:

  • Identify the athlete's threshold in that movement. It differs by movement and changes daily. An athlete's clean threshold might be 8 unbroken reps at 155 lb when fresh and 4 when fatigued.
  • Program to approach it, not to exceed it. Sets that end one or two reps before technique breaks, rather than at failure.
  • Teach the athlete to recognise their own threshold. Ask after a set: "which rep was the last good one?" An athlete who can answer that has learned something more valuable than the reps themselves.
  • Back off when the line is crossed. Reduce load, break the set, or extend rest. Crossing the line occasionally is information; living past it is how injuries happen.

Threshold training explains why prescribed loads and unbroken sets are coaching decisions rather than athlete preferences. "Go unbroken" is appropriate advice only if unbroken is inside that athlete's threshold today.

Relative Intensity

"Teach relative intensity" is its own line in the outline because it is the concept that makes the whole methodology universally scalable — and the one athletes most often fail to internalise.

  • Absolute intensity is objective power output: force x distance / time. Two hundred and twenty-five pounds is 225 lb regardless of who lifts it.
  • Relative intensity is that output expressed as a fraction of this athlete's current capacity. A 95 lb thruster is roughly 40% of a strong competitor's capacity and roughly 95% of a novice's.

The programming consequence is the core of scaling: the target of a workout is a relative intensity, and the load is the variable used to hit it. If the prescribed workout is designed to be performed at roughly 60-70% of capacity in unbroken sets, then every athlete's load should be whatever puts them at 60-70%.

Worked example. The workout is 21-15-9 thrusters and pull-ups, intended stimulus a sub-5-minute sprint with large unbroken sets.

All three athletes train at the same relative intensity and get the same stimulus. That is the point, and it is what a CCFT is supposed to be able to explain to the novice who feels embarrassed about their load.

The Teaching Script

The most useful line to give athletes: "Rx is a load, not a standard. The standard is the stimulus." Follow it with the specific target — "today you should finish in under five minutes with sets of at least seven; pick the weight that makes that true for you." This converts scaling from a status question into a targeting question, and it is the single most effective way to get honest self-scaling in a group class.

The corollary matters too. An athlete who scales too far down and cruises through a workout at 30% of capacity is also failing the prescription — under-training is a real error, not a safe default. Relative intensity cuts in both directions, and a CCFT coaches both.
