Everything in the preceding fourteen chapters is subject matter. This chapter is about the examination itself — how it is constructed, who may sit it, and how the administrative process works. Candidates lose seats and money to deadlines far more often than they lose them to content, so this material is worth reading before you build a study plan.

Two of these deserve emphasis.

Criterion-referenced scoring means you are measured against a fixed standard of competence, not against the other candidates in your window. The ACI Board and its committees rate the difficulty of each item against what an entry-level professional should know and be able to do, and those ratings are combined by the modified Angoff method into a passing standard. There is no curve and no fixed quota of passes. There is also no published fixed percentage cut score — anyone who tells you "you need 70%" is reporting a rumour, not a policy.

Two windows per year is a hard constraint on planning. Miss the application deadline and the next opportunity is roughly six months away. The CABT, the entry-level credential in the same family, is delivered by online proctoring year-round; the CBET is not.


2. The Six Content Areas

The content outline was revised effective June 2025. The six areas and their approximate weights:

Read that distribution carefully, because it is counter-intuitive. Most candidates come from an electronics background and instinctively study circuit theory and anatomy hardest. Those two areas together account for roughly 13% of the exam — about 22 questions. Meanwhile Healthcare Technology and Function plus Healthcare Technology Problem Solving together account for 60% — about 100 questions — and Healthcare Information Technology alone (17%) outweighs anatomy and electronics combined.

The practical implication for study planning:

  • Device knowledge dominates. Areas 4 and 5 are both organized around the same equipment families: monitoring, diagnostic, infusion, therapeutic, perioperative, life support and laboratory. Area 4 asks how each one works; area 5 asks how each one fails and is corrected. Learning a device family once serves both areas, which is the highest-leverage study strategy available.
  • Do not underestimate IT. At 17%, healthcare information technology is the third-largest area. It covers protected-data regulation (HIPAA, the NIST framework, HITRUST, HHS cybersecurity performance goals), system hardware troubleshooting, operating-system patching, wired and wireless network troubleshooting with diagnostic tools, medical device integration to the EMR directly or through middleware, and basic identifiers such as IP and MAC addresses.
  • Public Safety is broader than electrical safety. Beyond NFPA 99 and IEC 60601, it includes safety data sheets and hazard signage, universal precautions and PPE, the role of CMS and the organizations that accredit on its behalf, the ANSI/AAMI EQ56, EQ89, EQ93 and EQ103 standards, and effective use of the CMMS.

3. Eligibility: Full Certification

Applicants for full status must meet one of the following before the application deadline:

  1. An associate degree or higher in an electronics, technology or science program, plus two years of full-time BMET work experience; or
  2. Completion of a U.S. military biomedical equipment technology program, plus two years of full-time BMET work experience; or
  3. Four years of full-time BMET work experience.

Note what the degree pathway does and does not say. It requires an electronics, technology or science program — it does not require a biomedical equipment technology degree specifically. An associate degree in electronics technology, engineering technology or an applied science satisfies it.


4. Eligibility: Candidate Status

Applicants who want full certification but do not yet meet a full pathway may apply through candidate status by meeting one of:

  1. An associate degree or higher in an electronics, technology or science program; or
  2. Completion of a U.S. military biomedical equipment technology program; or
  3. Two years of full-time BMET work experience.

Candidate-status applicants sit the same examination. Those who pass receive a letter confirming candidate status and then have five years to accumulate the remaining experience. When the full requirements are met, the applicant submits the certification upgrade form with the associated fee, and on review the credential is updated to full certification.

This route matters for career planning: a technician two years into the field can sit the exam while the material is fresh from training rather than waiting another two years, then upgrade administratively.


5. Windows, Deadlines and the Application Process

Applications are submitted electronically through the AAMI store, with a separate application deadline and a later late-registration deadline that carries an additional $50 fee.

The process, in order:

  1. Create an AAMI account and log in before starting the application.
  2. Submit the application with documentation of the eligibility pathway claimed.
  3. Wait for the eligibility determination. ACI reviews the application and notifies eligible candidates by email. If an application is incomplete, the candidate is told what is missing and has five business days to respond; no response means denial. Falsifying information on the application is grounds for denial.
  4. Register for a seat. Eligible candidates receive instructions to select a testing center, date and time. Appointments must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance, and seats at a preferred center or time are not guaranteed — in some regions candidates travel a considerable distance. Schedule early.
  5. Receive the confirmation email, which contains the launch code needed to start the exam. Bring it.

Rescheduling and cancellation are governed by firm rules. A candidate may reschedule once, up to five business days before the appointment. Cancelling or rescheduling inside that five-business-day window incurs additional fees, and in practice a within-window reschedule forfeits the exam fees. Cancellation requests must reach ACI by April 25 for May exams and October 25 for November exams; a refund is issued minus a $100 processing fee. Candidates who simply fail to schedule, fail to appear, or cancel after the deadline forfeit all fees.

Application and registration fees apply only to the window applied for and are not transferable to a later window. Because the member and non-member difference on the exam alone is $50, and members also pay less to recertify, membership arithmetic is worth doing before applying.


7. Building a Study Plan from the Blueprint

Two study habits pay disproportionately for this exam. First, learn each device family once, from both directions — normal function and failure modes — because the two 30% areas are the same equipment asked two ways. Second, memorize the numbers that recur: leakage current limits, NFPA 99 categories, applied part types, defibrillator sync delay, REM impedance window, autoclave parameters, WMTS bands, ECG bandwidths. Those are the items where a criterion-referenced exam can test unambiguously, and they are the cheapest marks available.
