The OACETT Professional Practice Exam (PPE) is a mandatory jurisprudence and ethics examination for applicants seeking certification as a Certified Engineering Technician (C.Tech.) or Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) in Ontario. It assesses knowledge across Canadian Law, Ethics, and professional Practice.

What is the format and duration of the OACETT PPE?

The OACETT PPE is a 3-hour, closed-book, multiple-choice exam written online on demand with a live proctor. It has three sections: Law, Ethics, and Practice, and can be written in English or French.

What is the passing score for the OACETT PPE?

Candidates must achieve a passing grade on each of the three sections (Law, Ethics, and Practice) individually. OACETT does not publish a single combined percentage cut score. Candidates who fail a section rewrite only that specific section.

How much does the OACETT PPE cost?

Under OACETT's current fee schedule, the regular PPE package is CAD $295.00 + $15.60 HST ($310.60 total), which includes 6 months of eBook access and one exam attempt. A section rewrite is CAD $200.00 (HST exempt).

What study materials are provided for the OACETT PPE?

The PPE package includes six months of online access to OACETT's eBook, Law, Ethics and Professional Practice, which can be downloaded and printed in English or French. It covers Canadian civil law, the OACETT Act, By-law 20, the Code of Ethics and Rules of Professional Conduct, and the Registration and Professional Practice Committee terms of reference. The eBook cannot be bought separately.

What are the rules regarding the OACETT member stamp?

OACETT's Certified Member Identification Stamp is available only to Certified Members in good standing under OACETT's stamp policy. It remains OACETT's property, is used only in Ontario on documents the member prepared or supervised, and must be signed and dated beside the impression. It identifies the member and their acceptance of responsibility for the work but does not replace a Professional Engineer's seal. Rule 3.5 of the Rules of Professional Conduct also makes it misconduct to sign or seal a final document not actually prepared or checked by the member.
