CSLB Exam Logistics: Application Path & Two-Exam Requirement

Earning a California Class B General Building contractor license is not a single-test event. Under the Contractors State License Law (Business & Professions Code § 7000 et seq.), the applicant (or the entity’s Qualifying Individual) must satisfy experience, fingerprint, and examination requirements before the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) issues an active license. 1. Application Fee, Fingerprints & Eligibility Gate

Before you sit for exams, CSLB must accept a complete original application package. Per CSLB’s Get Licensed to Build materials (current published guidance):

Fingerprints are processed through the California Department of Justice (and FBI when required). A pending or disqualifying conviction history can delay or block licensure even if exams are passed—plan Live Scan early.

You may schedule the exams in either order after authorization, but both must be passed within the application validity period. Passing only Law & Business does not authorize Class B contracting; passing only the trade exam does not satisfy the law requirement.

Closed-Book, Computer-Based Testing at PSI

Both exams are closed-book and administered by PSI (CSLB’s testing vendor) at approved computer testing centers. You may not bring statutes, notes, phones, or reference materials into the exam room. PSI provides on-screen navigation; candidates should practice computer-based testing habits (flagging items, pacing, review screens).

Passing standard and score disclosure: CSLB uses psychometric methods to set the passing standard for each examination form. Candidates typically receive a pass/fail result at the test center after completing the exam. CSLB does not publish a fixed public question count or a simple published percentage (for example, a universally advertised “70% to pass”) in the same way some boards list a single cut score for all forms. Treat the official study-guide outlines as the content map and train for domain mastery rather than an invented percentage.

If you fail, PSI/CSLB provide diagnostic feedback by content area so you can retarget study. Do not invent a “magic” number of questions to memorize; forms can vary while the domain blueprint remains stable.

4. 18-Month Application Window & Result Validity

CSLB limits how long an approved application remains open for examination:

Strategic implication: If you pass Law & Business first and delay the trade exam until late in the 18-month window, you risk application expiration and a full reapplication. Conversely, if you pass one exam and the application expires before the second, you may still be able to use the five-year validity of the passed exam when you reapply—but you must still meet current application, fee, and fingerprint requirements. Plan both exams early enough to allow at least one retake cycle.
