Typical CES multi-step: (1) prove the station is on the horizontal curve and compute ℓ or deflection if asked, (2) apply the typical-section offset, (3) compute proposed elevation, (4) subtract existing. Dropping any layer is how people report 287.13 ft as the curb grade or call a cut a fill.

If the stem only needs the station on the arc, stop. If it asks how to set 44+00 from the PC, turn 5.730° and measure 119.80 ft.
Typical section: 12.00 ft CL to EOP, 2.0% normal crown (falls away from CL). Curve to the right, 12.00 ft Rt is inside (concentric radius 588 ft). Apply the 12.00 ft radially at 44+00, not along the 119.80 ft chord.
Vertical: equal-tangent crest, PVC 41+50.00, elev_PVC 284.00 ft, g1 = +2.50% = +0.025, g2 = −1.50% = −0.015, L = 400 ft.

BPELSG administers CES; Prometric delivers a computer-based exam. Session length is 2.5 hours (150 minutes). Items are multiple-choice and may include alternate item types. Read on-screen instructions; do not assume every item is four options.
The current Candidate Information Bulletin (CIB) and Board candidate page do not publish a fixed question count. Do not treat an unofficial 55-item rumor as a Board specification, and do not build a seconds-per-question plan from it. Pace against the items on your screen. If you see N items, you have 150/N minutes on average — compute that after the first screen, not from a blog.
Every question has equal weight. There is no penalty for guessing. An unanswered item cannot help. If two distractors are gone, pick between the remaining pair and move. A mixed-layout item that is already good to a hundredth does not need a 0.001-ft closure while later Domain III traverse items sit unseen.
Skip-and-return: flag a long curve-plus-typical-section-plus-cut item, answer two shorter questions, then return. The CBT lets you mark and review. Burning 12 minutes on one stakeout while leaving blanks is worse than a guessed 1.25 vs 1.20, because a guess can still be right and a blank cannot.
Scratch paper: the CIB says two booklets and pencils are provided; you may not bring your own scratch paper and you may not write on anything else. Calculators: up to two handhelds, no QWERTY, no smartwatches or data collectors.
Open-book bound references — tab the formulas
CES is not closed-book. The CIB allows bound references in one trip / one box (for example a Bankers Box), maximum 10 in H × 15 in W × 24 in D. Bound means stitching, glue, or fasteners that penetrate all papers (ring, spiral, snap binders, brads, screw posts). Hand-stapled stacks, unbound notes, blank tablets, and slide/wheel charts are prohibited. Post-its as tabs only, attached before you enter. Up to two of: ruler, protractor, architect scale, engineer scale.
Tab before test day:

Remaining-hours weights (2022 test plan)
When hours are short, use the official 2022 weights, not a favorite topic. Domain III Data Analysis and Evaluation is 30%, Domain I Survey Planning is 25%, Domain V Construction Surveying is 20%. Those three are 75% of the exam. Domain II Field Data Collection is 15% and Domain IV Mapping is 10%.

That split is a planning tool, not a Board study-hour mandate. If a fail diagnostic shows Mapping and Construction weak, move hours there and keep Domain III large. Do not spend the last 20 hours only on staking because this chapter came last.
66% is motivation, not superstition
BPELSG exam_statistics.pdf (revised August 2026): 2025 CES 2,420 tested, 1,590 passed, 66%. 2024 was also 66% (1,784 of 2,698). The two published 2026 quarters each came in at 64%. About one in three sittings does not pass. That is not a lucky number, a raw 66% cut, or a reason to skip Domain IV. The passing standard is a Board-set minimum acceptable knowledge cut, not a published 70% raw score. Use 66% as evidence that candidates who prepare on the current five-domain plan often pass, and that an obsolete closed-book or six-area outline is a common way to join the 34%.
After a fail: diagnostic, not an appeal
Results are emailed the month following the exam month, typically mid-month. A pass is a designation without a numeric score. A fail includes a diagnostic by content area.
Results are not appealable or reviewable. Title 16, California Code of Regulations (CCR) sections 443(b) and 444(d) close item challenges and hand regrades. Prometric's general comment box is not a score appeal. Do not spend the next quarter drafting an appeal of item 17. Spend it on the diagnostic: if Construction Surveying and Data Analysis are the weak bars, that is Chapters 8–15 and this mixed-layout drill, not a petition to the Board.
Re-exam: PE application fee is not due again; the exam fee is. You still cannot sit in the same quarter you pay. Pay, pick a later legal quarter, restudy from the diagnostic, tab the formulas, and run mixed H + V + offset + cut/fill until the 1.25 ft cut is automatic.
Exam traps on mixed items and on test day
- CL high-point elevation used as curb/EOP grade (287.13 instead of 286.89).
- Crown applied to the PVI tangent instead of the curve.
- Offset along the chord from the PC.
- Cut/fill sign flipped.
- Occupying the PI at 44+40.77 to set 44+00.
- Building a seconds-per-item plan from an unpublished official count.
- Leaving blanks because "guessing feels wrong" (there is no guessing penalty).
- Appealing a fail instead of reading the diagnostic.
