Serving It Right Certification and Exam

Key Takeaways

  • The official exam has 35 multiple-choice questions; 80% means at least 28 correct answers.

  • The official course is free; the exam costs $40 plus tax and includes three attempts.

  • SIR certification expires five years after successful completion; there is no general 120-day employment grace period.

  • At special events, permittees and managers need SIR at 500 or more attendees per day; servers may use SES or SIR at any event size.

What SIR Certifies

Serving It Right (SIR) is British Columbia’s responsible beverage service program. The official program teaches people who sell, serve or supervise liquor how to meet their responsibilities to patrons and the public. It is distinct from Selling It Right, the cannabis retail training program, and from Special Event Server (SES), the shorter program for special-event service. Similar names do not make their certificates interchangeable for every job.

This OpenExamPrep guide is independent study material. It cannot issue an SIR certificate or replace the official certification exam. Use it to practise applying the rules, and study the complete official course before testing. The official manual requires candidates to confirm that they understand the material and completed the exam on their own and in good faith.

The pass calculation is 35 × 0.80 = 28. Seven incorrect answers still leave 28 correct; eight leave 27 and fall below the pass mark. This is a score requirement, not a claim that 80% of candidates pass. The official owner does not publish a candidate pass rate on the checked pages.

The current July 2026 print manual contains three teaching modules: Alcohol and Your Legal Responsibilities, Intoxication and Impairment, and Responsible Beverage Service, followed by scenarios and appendices. Published exam percentages by module are unavailable. Study all topics rather than treating an invented weight as permission to skip them.

There is no minimum age to obtain the certificate, and the official certification exam is offered in English. A certificate does not override legal age and employment-task restrictions.

Who Needs Certification?

The Act and Regulation set training requirements, and the applicable licence handbook identifies the roles covered in each establishment. SIR is an operating requirement: having a liquor licence does not mean the staff can begin selling liquor without the required training.

  • Food-primary licensees, managers, servers and people who may be left in charge need SIR.
  • Liquor-primary licensees, managers, servers and bartenders need SIR; check the handbook for other staff roles.
  • Retail liquor licensees, managers and sales staff need SIR.
  • Licensed caterers and their managers and liquor-serving staff need SIR at catered events.
  • Ordinary staff and third-party drivers delivering for a licensee need SIR and must assess the recipient’s age and condition; applicable handbooks distinguish common carriers such as Canada Post.

Do not infer a universal requirement for every person employed in a building. A cook, entertainer, stock worker, security worker or corporate director may have a different role from a person selling, serving or supervising liquor. Licence conditions and duties govern. House policies may require training more broadly as a business decision.

Special Events: The Important Distinction

RoleFewer than 500 attendees per day500 or more attendees per day
Special Event Permit holder and managersSES or SIRSIR
Paid or volunteer servers and bartendersSES or SIRSES or SIR

For an event with exactly 500 attendees per day, the permittee and managers fall in the SIR category. The larger-event rule does not force every server to take SIR when valid SES is sufficient. Conversely, at a small wedding under a Special Event Permit, volunteer status does not remove the server training requirement. A current SIR holder does not also need SES.

A catered event operated under a catering licence is different from an event operating under a Special Event Permit. Identify the authorization first, then apply its training rule. Do not use the attendance table to bypass the obligations of a licensed caterer.

Renewal, Records and Recognized Exemptions

Check the expiry date before accepting a shift that requires certification. Renewal involves completing the program and passing again; expiry does not automatically extend because the worker has years of experience. The employer should maintain the required list of certificate numbers and expiry dates, and produce it to an inspector or police officer on request. A downloaded certificate helps verify the information, but a claim that every worker must carry a physical wallet card is too broad.

The old general 120-day grace period was eliminated in 2007. Do not use it as a current new-worker or new-licensee exemption. Arrange the required certification before operating or doing the covered work.

Some servers relocating from another Canadian jurisdiction can use a valid certificate from a recognized program until it expires. This is a role-specific recognition rule, not universal portability for licensees, managers or retail liquor staff. Check the official recognized-program list and the employer’s licence requirements. Employers may still require BC SIR as a house policy.

Applying the Distinctions

An organizer hires three certified SES servers for a 600-person special event. Those servers may meet the server training requirement, but the permittee and managers still require SIR. An experienced restaurant supervisor with an expired SIR certificate cannot rely on a new-hire grace period. A courier must check the person receiving the liquor rather than assume the account holder is the recipient. These questions test the precise role and situation, so identify both before selecting an answer.
