Choosing a Rate Inside a Range
Labels usually give a range, not a number: "Apply 12 to 22 fluid ounces per acre." The range exists because efficacy varies with conditions, and the applicator is expected to choose.

Two ceilings bind the choice, and exam items test both:

Worked example: an insecticide has a 21-day PHI on soybeans and a 12-hour REI. An application made on August 1 means the earliest lawful harvest is August 22, and workers may re-enter without early-entry PPE after 12 hours on August 2. Scouting the field on August 3 is fine; harvesting on August 15 is a violation.
Also watch for the grazing and feeding restrictions that ride alongside the PHI on pasture and forage labels - a separate interval for grazing livestock, and often another for cutting hay.
Rotational Crop Restrictions (Plant-Back Intervals)
Residual herbicides persist in soil and can injure the next crop. Labels carry a rotational crop table: how many months must pass before each listed crop may be planted, and a catch-all for crops not listed.
Three rules to carry into the exam:
- The interval is a legal direction, not an agronomic suggestion. Planting early is a use inconsistent with the labelling.
- A crop not on the rotational list may not be planted until the label's "all other crops" interval has elapsed, or a successful field bioassay has been performed where the label authorizes one.
- Intervals often carry conditions - a minimum accumulated rainfall, a minimum soil pH, or a requirement to perform a bioassay. Read the footnotes.
