Domain VIII-A expects you to apply prefixes, suffixes, and root words so you can decode unfamiliar terms instead of guessing. If a requisition says "hypoglycemia panel" or a chart notes "phlebitis at prior venipuncture site," you should know what those word parts mean before you choose a collection site or tube.

Medical words are built like LEGO bricks. A prefix sits at the front and modifies meaning — often quantity, location, or direction. A root (sometimes called a combining form when a vowel is added) carries the core concept, usually a body part, fluid, or process. A suffix ends the word and often signals a condition, procedure, or specialty. When you meet an unfamiliar term on the exam, split it into these parts before you eliminate answer choices.

Core Roots and Combining Forms for Phlebotomy

The word phlebotomy is the most exam-relevant example. Phlebo- (or phleb-) means vein. -Otomy means cutting or incision. Together, phlebotomy is an incision into a vein — exactly what venipuncture accomplishes with a needle rather than a surgical blade. Procedure-oriented suffixes you may see on orders: -centesis (puncture to withdraw fluid), -graphy (recording/imaging), -metry (measurement), and -scopy (visual examination). -Pathy means disease (neuropathy); -ology means study of (hematology).

Anticoagulant and Clotting Vocabulary Used on the RPT

Orders and tube selection hinge on whether the lab needs clotted blood (serum) or unclotted blood (whole blood or plasma). An anticoagulant is a substance that prevents coagulation (clotting). Common exam language:

  • Coagulation / clotting — formation of a fibrin clot
  • Anticoagulant — additive that keeps blood from clotting (EDTA, citrate, heparin, oxalate)
  • Clot activator — substance that speeds clotting in serum tubes (silica, thrombin)
  • Thrombus — a clot inside a vessel; embolus — a clot or fragment that travels
  • Hemostasis — the process that stops bleeding

Decoding Practice: Build the Word, Then Match the Clinical Action

When an RPT item says a patient has hematoma formation after venipuncture, decode hemato- (blood) + -oma (swelling/tumor-like mass) → blood collected in tissue. That points you toward inadequate pressure, through-and-through puncture, or fragile veins — not toward "infection" (-itis) or "low glucose" (hypoglycemia).

When an order reads "blood cultures for bacteremia," -emia tells you the concern is organisms in the blood; your focus becomes sterile technique and culture bottles first in the order of draw — not a random chemistry tube.

When a note says "avoid arm with arteriovenous fistula," arterio- + veno- reminds you arterial and venous systems are surgically joined; do not use that limb for routine venipuncture.

Exam Traps in Terminology Items

  1. Mixing hypo- and hyper- — reverse them and every glucose/electrolyte interpretation flips.
  2. Assuming -emia always means infection — it means a blood condition; infection terms need roots like septic- or bacter-.
