What the 2026 AAF Test Actually Is

Cost. There is no student-published national fee. Do not memorize a dollar amount from a forum post. College Board sells ACCUPLACER units to schools and testing centers; the school decides whether orientation covers the test, whether a retest has a local charge, or whether a remote proctoring vendor adds a fee. Ask the institution that will use the score.
Timing. Generally untimed means College Board does not publish a national clock. A testing center can still end a session because the building closes. Use the extra time for algebra hygiene, not for rushing: check the domain of a radical, reject an extraneous rational root, and reread whether the stem asked for slope or for an intercept.
Calculators. Handheld calculators are not allowed. The exception is an approved accommodation arranged through the testing institution. AAF Is Not QAS and Not Arithmetic
ACCUPLACER is a suite. Mixing the three math tests is the most expensive identity error a student can make.
- Arithmetic places students who still need whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, and everyday operations. If fraction arithmetic is still slow, Arithmetic is the honest starting point.
- Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics (QAS) mixes quantitative reasoning, elementary algebra, and statistics. Many non-STEM college-level math courses and some intermediate-algebra sequences use QAS.
- AAF starts where QAS leaves off. It is built for functions, quadratics, polynomials, radical and rational equations, exponentials, logarithms, algebra-based geometry, and trigonometry.
A QAS-flavored item might ask you to read a two-way frequency table or compute a constant unit rate. An AAF-flavored item is more likely to ask you to rewrite (x^2 − 9)/(x − 3) for x ≠ 3, locate the vertex of y = 2(x − 4)^2 − 7, or evaluate sin 30° from a 30°-60°-90° triangle. Why Institutions Give AAF
Colleges use AAF to avoid two expensive mistakes: parking a calculus-ready student in a review course, and sending an unprepared student into college algebra or precalculus they will fail. Because there is no national cut score, a 248 at one community college might unlock college algebra while the same 248 at a state university still lands in intermediate algebra. The number is a placement input, not a certificate.
STEM pathways—engineering, physics, chemistry, computer science, and many calculus-based health-science tracks—typically need AAF rather than QAS alone. Dual-enrollment juniors taking precalculus through a community college often sit AAF as well. Functions is the widest band (10–20%). Linear equations plus linear applications together can approach 20–30% of a given 20-item draw. Geometry is easy to skip if you only read the nine-category student page—and that skip is a trap. The bar chart below uses midpoints of the official Table 10 percentage ranges. How to Read Those Weights
Because the CAT adapts, you will not see a mini-section labeled Factoring with a fixed two items. You might see one factoring item, or two, depending on how you answered nearby algebra. Treat every Table 10 row as live. A student who ignores trigonometry because it is only 5–15% can still see a right-triangle item in the first five questions; missing it can drop later difficulty.

A Worked AAF-Style Item (Original)
Solve √(2x + 5) = x − 1 and identify any extraneous root.
The square-root symbol forces 2x + 5 ≥ 0, and the right side of an equation that equals a principal square root must be nonnegative, so x − 1 ≥ 0, hence x ≥ 1. Square both sides: 2x + 5 = (x − 1)^2 = x^2 − 2x + 1. Bring all terms to one side: 0 = x^2 − 4x − 4. The quadratic formula gives x = [4 ± √(16 + 16)] / 2 = [4 ± √32] / 2. Because √32 = √(16 · 2) = 4√2, this simplifies to [4 ± 4√2] / 2 = 2 ± 2√2.
Numerically, 2 + 2√2 ≈ 4.83, which is greater than 1, so it is in the domain. Check: √(2 · 4.83 + 5) ≈ √14.66 ≈ 3.83, and 4.83 − 1 ≈ 3.83. It works.
The companion value 2 − 2√2 ≈ −0.83 is less than 1, so it violates x ≥ 1. It is extraneous. If you forget the check, the CAT will score the item wrong and may feed an easier radical next instead of the function item you were ready for. That is AAF in miniature: algebra, a domain constraint, and a trap that looks like a second solution.
Linear warm-up, because this guide’s first content chapter is writing linear equations: a lab fee is $35 plus $12 per hour. Hours h and cost C satisfy C = 12h + 35. A second original example shows why function notation belongs on day one of AAF prep. Let f(x) = x^2 − 4x. Then f(3) = 9 − 12 = −3 and f(−1) = 1 + 4 = 5, so f(3) + f(−1) = 2. Students who still translate f(3) as f times 3 will miss an early CAT item that looks elementary on paper.
