Thrust Blocks

Pressure pipe pushes at every change in direction. The force is thrust, and it acts in the direction that the fitting wants to move (a 90° bend pushes outward; a dead-end pushes along the line). At every fitting that changes direction or stops flow, a thrust block resists that force.

A thrust block is concrete poured between the fitting and undisturbed soil, sized so the bearing area is enough that soil pressure stays below the soil's safe bearing capacity.

Thrust blocks are required at:

  • All bends (vertical and horizontal, including 11¼°, 22½°, 45°, 90°),
  • Tees and wyes,
