1A structural steel element is subjected to a triaxial stress state with principal stresses σ₁ = 120 MPa, σ₂ = 40 MPa, and σ₃ = -60 MPa. What is the absolute maximum shear stress (τ_max,abs) in the material?
A.90 MPa
B.40 MPa
C.50 MPa
D.80 MPa
Explanation: The absolute maximum shear stress across all planes is determined by the largest Mohr's circle formed by the extreme principal stresses: τ_max,abs = (σ₁ - σ₃) / 2. Substituting the given values yields [120 - (-60)] / 2 = 180 / 2 = 90 MPa.
2A 45-degree rectangular strain rosette mounted on a bridge girder surface measures normal strains ε₀° = 400 × 10⁻⁶, ε₄₅° = 200 × 10⁻⁶, and ε₉₀° = 100 × 10⁻⁶. What is the engineering shear strain γ_xy on the x-y axes?
A.-100 × 10⁻⁶ rad
B.+200 × 10⁻⁶ rad
C.-50 × 10⁻⁶ rad
D.+300 × 10⁻⁶ rad
Explanation: For a 45-degree rosette, the strain transformation formula yields ε₄₅° = (ε₀° + ε₉₀°)/2 + γ_xy/2. Rearranging gives γ_xy = 2ε₄₅° - ε₀° - ε₉₀° = 2(200 × 10⁻⁶) - 400 × 10⁻⁶ - 100 × 10⁻⁶ = -100 × 10⁻⁶ rad.
3A rectangular beam section has width b and depth h and principal centroidal axes y and z. Take normal stress as sigma = (Mz/Iz)*y - (My/Iy)*z. Define tan(theta) = Mz/My and neutral-axis angle tan(alpha) = z/y. For arbitrary bending direction with nonzero My, which general relation follows?
A.tan(α) = (I_z / I_y) tan(θ)
B.tan(α) = (I_y / I_z) tan(θ)
C.tan(α) = tan(θ)
D.tan(α) = (b / h) tan(θ)
Explanation: Set sigma = 0: (Mz/Iz)*y = (My/Iy)*z. Rearranging gives z/y = (Mz/My)*(Iy/Iz), so tan(alpha) = (Iy/Iz)*tan(theta). Explicit angle definitions avoid confusing the loading plane with the moment-vector direction.
4For a thin-walled channel section with flange width b, web height h (between flange centerlines), and uniform wall thickness t, what is the horizontal distance e from the web centerline to the shear center?
A.e = 3b² / (6b + h)
B.e = b / 2
C.e = b² / (2b + h)
D.e = 3b² / (2b + 3h)
Explanation: Integrating the shear flow along both flanges produces flange shear forces V_f = V · b² · h · t / (4 I_x). Taking moments about the web centerline yields V · e = 2 · V_f · (h/2). Substituting I_x = (t · h² / 12)(6b + h) produces e = 3b² / (6b + h).
5A thick-walled hydraulic cylinder has inner radius r_i = 100 mm and outer radius r_o = 200 mm. It is subjected to an internal fluid pressure p_i = 60 MPa with zero external pressure. According to Lamé's equations, what is the maximum hoop (tangential) tensile stress in the cylinder wall?
A.100 MPa
B.60 MPa
C.80 MPa
D.120 MPa
Explanation: Lamé's equation gives the tangential stress as σ_θ(r) = [p_i · r_i² / (r_o² - r_i²)] · [1 + r_o² / r²]. The peak stress occurs at the innermost surface r = r_i: σ_θ,max = p_i · (r_o² + r_i²) / (r_o² - r_i²) = 60 · (200² + 100²) / (200² - 100²) = 60 · (50,000 / 30,000) = 100 MPa.
6A cantilever beam of length L and uniform flexural rigidity EI carries a concentrated tip load P. Using Castigliano's second theorem, what is the tip deflection?
A.P L³ / (3 E I)
B.P L³ / (2 E I)
C.P L⁴ / (8 E I)
D.5 P L³ / (48 E I)
Explanation: The bending moment at distance x from the tip is M(x) = P x. The strain energy is U = ∫ (M² / 2EI) dx = (P² / 2EI) ∫₀ᴸ x² dx = P² L³ / (6EI). Applying Castigliano's second theorem, the deflection under load P is δ = ∂U / ∂P = P L³ / (3EI).
7A structural column of length L with uniform flexural rigidity EI is rigidly fixed at the base and pinned at the top. What is the theoretical Euler elastic buckling load P_cr?
A.2.046 π² E I / L²
B.π² E I / L²
C.4 π² E I / L²
D.0.25 π² E I / L²
Explanation: For a fixed-pinned column, solving the governing differential equation y'''' + k² y'' = 0 with boundary conditions y(0)=0, y'(0)=0, y(L)=0, y''(L)=0 leads to tan(kL) = kL, whose smallest non-zero root is kL ≈ 4.4934. Thus P_cr = (4.4934 / L)² EI ≈ 20.19 EI / L² ≈ 2.046 π² EI / L² (corresponding to effective length factor K ≈ 0.699 ≈ 0.7).
8In the inelastic buckling of intermediate steel columns, Shanley's inelastic column theory resolved the historical paradox between Engesser's tangent modulus theory and the reduced modulus theory by demonstrating that:
A.Bifurcation buckling occurs at the tangent modulus load with increasing axial force, without strain reversal
B.Bifurcation buckling can only occur at the higher reduced modulus load with immediate strain reversal
C.Buckling in the inelastic range is governed strictly by the elastic initial Young's modulus E
D.Inelastic buckling occurs at the average of the tangent modulus load and reduced modulus load
Explanation: Shanley (1947) showed that column deflection initiates at the tangent modulus load P_t = π² E_t I / L² simultaneously with an increase in total axial load, allowing bending without unloading the convex side (no strain reversal). The tangent modulus load is therefore the actual lower bound for inelastic bifurcation.
9According to the Winkler-Bach theory for curved beams subjected to pure bending M, how does the location of the neutral axis compare to the centroidal axis?
A.The neutral axis shifts toward the center of curvature relative to the centroidal axis
B.The neutral axis shifts away from the center of curvature relative to the centroidal axis
C.The neutral axis coincides exactly with the centroidal axis regardless of curvature
D.The neutral axis position depends strictly on Poisson's ratio and not radius of curvature
Explanation: Because fibers closer to the center of curvature have shorter initial lengths, a given rotation produces larger circumferential strains. Equilibrium of axial forces requires the neutral axis to shift inward toward the center of curvature by an eccentricity e = R - R_n, resulting in hyperbolic stress distribution.
10A thin-walled hollow tube with a closed single-cell cross section of enclosed area A_m = 50,000 mm² and uniform wall thickness t = 5 mm is subjected to a pure twisting torque T = 25 kN·m. What is the shear stress τ in the tube wall according to the Bredt-Batho formula?
A.50 MPa
B.100 MPa
C.25 MPa
D.250 MPa
Explanation: By Bredt-Batho theory for closed thin-walled tubes, shear flow is uniform: q = T / (2 A_m). The shear stress is τ = q / t = T / (2 A_m · t). Substituting the parameters: τ = (25 × 10⁶ N·mm) / (2 · 50,000 mm² · 5 mm) = 25,000,000 / 500,000 = 50 MPa.
