1A solid steel prismatic bar with cross-sectional area A = 600 mm² and length L = 2.0 m is subjected to an axial tensile force P = 120 kN. Given elastic modulus E = 200 GPa, what are the normal stress and total axial elongation of the bar?
A.Normal stress = 200 MPa; elongation = 2.00 mm
B.Normal stress = 150 MPa; elongation = 1.50 mm
C.Normal stress = 200 MPa; elongation = 1.00 mm
D.Normal stress = 240 MPa; elongation = 2.40 mm
Explanation: Normal stress is computed as sigma = P / A = (120,000 N) / (600 mm²) = 200 MPa. Axial elongation follows Hooke's law: delta = (P * L) / (A * E) = (120,000 N * 2,000 mm) / (600 mm² * 200,000 MPa) = 2.00 mm.
2A solid circular steel drive shaft has a diameter d = 50 mm. If it transmits a torque T = 1.50 kN·m, what is the maximum torsional shear stress tau_max developed at the outer surface of the shaft?
A.30.6 MPa
B.61.1 MPa
C.122.2 MPa
D.48.9 MPa
Explanation: For a solid circular cross-section, the polar section modulus is Z_p = pi * d³ / 16 = pi * (50 mm)³ / 16 = 24,543.7 mm³. The maximum torsional shear stress is tau_max = T / Z_p = (1.50 * 10⁶ N·mm) / (24,543.7 mm³) = 61.1 MPa.
3At a critical point in a stressed structural plate, the in-plane normal stresses are sigma_x = 70 MPa and sigma_y = -10 MPa (compression), accompanied by a positive shear stress tau_xy = 30 MPa. What are the maximum in-plane shear stress and maximum principal normal stress?
A.Maximum in-plane shear stress = 50 MPa; maximum principal stress = 80 MPa
B.Maximum in-plane shear stress = 40 MPa; maximum principal stress = 70 MPa
C.Maximum in-plane shear stress = 50 MPa; maximum principal stress = 90 MPa
D.Maximum in-plane shear stress = 30 MPa; maximum principal stress = 60 MPa
Explanation: The center of Mohr's circle is sigma_avg = (sigma_x + sigma_y) / 2 = (70 + (-10)) / 2 = 30 MPa. The radius of Mohr's circle is R = sqrt(((sigma_x - sigma_y) / 2)² + tau_xy²) = sqrt(((70 - (-10)) / 2)² + 30²) = sqrt(40² + 30²) = 50 MPa. Therefore, the maximum in-plane shear stress is R = 50 MPa, and the maximum principal stress is sigma_1 = sigma_avg + R = 30 + 50 = 80 MPa.
4A planar pin-jointed truss consists of j = 8 joints, m = 13 members, and is supported by r = 3 independent reaction components (one pin support and one roller support). What is the static determinacy and stability classification of this truss?
A.Statically indeterminate to the 1st degree and stable
B.Statically determinate and internally/externally stable, provided members are properly arranged without geometric instability
C.Statically unstable because the number of members is less than 2j
D.Statically indeterminate to the 2nd degree and unstable
Explanation: For a planar truss, the condition of static determinacy is m + r = 2j. Here, m + r = 13 + 3 = 16, and 2j = 2 * 8 = 16. Because m + r = 2j and the three reactions are non-concurrent and non-parallel, the truss is statically determinate and externally stable, provided the member geometry is triangular and free of critical mechanisms.
5A simply supported symmetric Warren truss spans 18 m. Bottom joints occur at x = 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, and 18 m; top joints occur at x = 1.5, 4.5, 7.5, 10.5, 13.5, and 16.5 m at height 4 m. Adjacent top and bottom joints are connected by diagonals. A 120 kN downward load acts at the bottom joint x = 9 m. What is the force in the horizontal top chord between x = 7.5 m and x = 10.5 m?
A.135 kN tension
B.135 kN compression
C.90 kN compression
D.67.5 kN compression
Explanation: Symmetry gives a 60 kN vertical reaction at each support. Cut the central top chord, the diagonal meeting the bottom joint at x = 9 m, and an adjacent bottom chord. Taking moments about that bottom joint eliminates the other cut forces: F_top*4 = 60*9 = 540 kN·m. Thus the top chord force is 135 kN in compression.
6A simply supported rectangular timber beam with width b = 150 mm and depth h = 300 mm spans L = 6.0 m. It carries a uniformly distributed service load w = 10 kN/m (inclusive of self-weight). What is the maximum flexural bending stress sigma_max in the beam?
A.15.0 MPa
B.20.0 MPa
C.25.0 MPa
D.30.0 MPa
Explanation: The maximum bending moment occurs at midspan: M_max = w * L² / 8 = (10 kN/m) * (6.0 m)² / 8 = 45 kN·m = 45 * 10⁶ N·mm. The elastic section modulus is S = b * h² / 6 = (150 mm) * (300 mm)² / 6 = 2.25 * 10⁶ mm³. The maximum flexural stress is sigma_max = M_max / S = (45 * 10⁶ N·mm) / (2.25 * 10⁶ mm³) = 20.0 MPa.
7A solid rectangular cross-section beam with width b and height h is subjected to a vertical shear force V. What is the ratio of the maximum transverse shear stress tau_max at the neutral axis to the average shear stress tau_avg = V / (b * h)?
A.1.00
B.1.33 (4/3)
C.1.50 (3/2)
D.2.00
Explanation: According to Jourawski's shear formula tau = V * Q / (I * b), the first moment of area above the neutral axis is Q = (b * h / 2) * (h / 4) = b * h² / 8. With moment of inertia I = b * h³ / 12, the maximum shear stress at the neutral axis is tau_max = V * (b * h² / 8) / ((b * h³ / 12) * b) = (3/2) * V / (b * h) = 1.5 * tau_avg.
8An elastic column of length L = 4.0 m has pin-ended boundary conditions at both ends (K = 1.0). Given elastic modulus E = 200 GPa and weak-axis moment of inertia I = 8.0 * 10⁶ mm⁴, what is the Euler critical elastic buckling load P_cr of the column?
A.493.5 kN
B.987.0 kN
C.1,973.9 kN
D.246.7 kN
Explanation: The Euler buckling formula for a pin-ended column is P_cr = pi² * E * I / (K * L)². Substituting the parameters: P_cr = pi² * (200 * 10³ N/mm²) * (8.0 * 10⁶ mm⁴) / (1.0 * 4,000 mm)² = pi² * (1.6 * 10¹² N·mm²) / (1.6 * 10⁷ mm²) = pi² * 10⁵ N = 986,960 N = 987.0 kN.
9Using the unit-load method (virtual work), what is the vertical tip deflection delta at the free end of a cantilever beam of span L and constant flexural rigidity EI subjected to a concentrated downward load P at its tip?
A.P * L³ / (3 * E * I)
B.P * L³ / (8 * E * I)
C.P * L³ / (2 * E * I)
D.5 * P * L³ / (48 * E * I)
Explanation: Under the real load P, the bending moment at distance x from the tip is M(x) = -P * x. Applying a virtual unit load of 1 at the tip, the virtual moment is m(x) = -1 * x. The virtual work equation yields delta = integral from 0 to L of [M(x) * m(x) / (E * I)] dx = integral from 0 to L of [(-P * x) * (-x) / (E * I)] dx = (P / (E * I)) * [x³ / 3] from 0 to L = P * L³ / (3 * E * I).
10For a simply supported beam AB of span L = 10 m, an internal section C is located at x = 4.0 m from the left support A. What are the maximum positive and maximum negative influence line ordinates for the transverse shear force V_C at section C?
A.+0.40 and -0.60
B.+0.60 and -0.40
C.+0.50 and -0.50
D.+0.80 and -0.20
Explanation: According to the Müller-Breslau principle, the influence line for shear at section C is obtained by cutting the section and introducing a unit relative transverse shear displacement without relative rotation. When a unit load is just to the right of section C (x > 4 m), V_C = +R_A = +(10 - x) / 10; as x approaches 4 m from the right, the ordinate reaches +(10 - 4)/10 = +0.60. When the unit load is just to the left of section C (x < 4 m), V_C = -R_B = -x / 10; at x = 4 m from the left, the ordinate is -4 / 10 = -0.40. The total jump across the cut equals 1.0.
