1On an ordinary marked road in Taiwan, with no speed-limit sign or marking and no separated slow lane, what is the default maximum speed?
A.50 km/h
B.40 km/h
C.60 km/h
D.30 km/h
Explanation: Article 93 of the Road Traffic Safety Rules sets a default maximum of 50 km/h. Separated slow lanes and roads without the specified lane or direction markings have lower defaults.
2An unsigned road has no lane lines, directional separation lines, or directional restriction lines. What is its default maximum speed under Article 93?
A.30 km/h
B.40 km/h
C.50 km/h
D.20 km/h
Explanation: The default maximum on a road lacking these markings is 30 km/h. A driver must still slow further when conditions require it.
3Two vehicles approach an uncontrolled intersection on roads with equal lane counts. No signs or markings designate a main road, and both vehicles intend to go straight. Which must yield under Article 102?
A.The vehicle on the left yields to the vehicle on the right
B.The vehicle on the right yields to the vehicle on the left
C.The first vehicle to signal has priority
D.The vehicle on the wider paved shoulder has priority
Explanation: After main-road status, lane count, and turning versus straight movement have been considered, the left vehicle yields to the right. Equal road width alone would not establish all these conditions.
4At an intersection without signals or a police officer, no signs or markings identify main and secondary roads. One road has fewer lanes than the other. Which priority rule applies first?
A.Traffic on the road with fewer lanes stops and yields to traffic on the road with more lanes
B.Traffic on the road with more lanes yields to the first vehicle to arrive
C.A right-turning vehicle always goes before straight traffic
D.The left-hand vehicle has priority regardless of lane count
Explanation: Article 102 applies the lane-count rule when main and secondary status has not been designated. Turning and left-versus-right priority resolve the subsequent equal-lane-count situations.
5You intend to turn left across an oncoming vehicle's path at an intersection showing a circular green light. What should you do?
A.Yield to the oncoming vehicle proceeding straight
B.Turn first because your indicator was activated earlier
C.Turn first because you reached the intersection center
D.Expect the straight-moving vehicle to stop after you begin turning
Explanation: Article 102 requires turning vehicles to yield to straight-moving traffic. A circular green light does not provide an exclusive protected left turn.
6At what breath alcohol concentration does Article 114 prohibit driving after drinking?
A.0.15 mg/L or higher
B.0.25 mg/L or higher only
C.0.08 mg/L or higher
D.0.50 mg/L or higher only
Explanation: The Road Traffic Safety Rules prohibit driving at a breath alcohol concentration of 0.15 mg/L or above. This is a legal threshold, not a recommendation that drinking below it makes driving safe.
7Which arrangement is appropriate for a one-year-old child in a private passenger car under Taiwan's child-restraint rules?
A.An approved rear-facing infant restraint secured in the rear seat
B.An adult holding the child under the adult's seatbelt
C.A booster cushion in the front passenger seat
D.The rear-seat adult belt alone
Explanation: The child-restraint regulations require infants in this age group to use a secured rear-seat infant restraint, such as a rear-facing child seat. Holding a child or using an adult belt alone does not provide the required restraint.
8An adult sits in the rear seat of a private passenger car on an ordinary city road. What is the seatbelt requirement?
A.The rear-seat adult must fasten the seatbelt
B.Only the driver and front passenger need belts
C.Rear-seat belts are required only on freeways
D.Rear-seat belts are optional for short journeys
Explanation: Rear-seat adults in passenger cars must wear seatbelts as well as front-seat occupants. Ordinary roads and short trips do not remove that obligation.
9A curb has a solid red line and no sign modifying its operating hours. May you stop there briefly to drop off a passenger?
A.No; the red line prohibits temporary stopping throughout the day
B.Yes, if the stop lasts less than three minutes
C.Yes, if the hazard lights are on
D.Yes, outside the morning and evening rush hours
Explanation: Article 169 of the signs and markings rules makes a red curb a no-temporary-stopping restriction for 24 hours unless signs shorten the period. Passenger drop-off is still temporary stopping.
10At noon, a yellow curb has no supplementary restrictions and the location is otherwise lawful for temporary stopping. Which action is permitted?
A.Stop for passenger boarding for less than three minutes while remaining ready to move
B.Leave the car unattended for two minutes to shop
C.Park for thirty minutes with the engine running
D.Park until 8 PM because the line is not red
Explanation: A yellow curb normally prohibits parking from 7 AM to 8 PM. Temporary stopping for boarding or loading must remain under three minutes and keep the vehicle ready to move; posted variations and other stopping prohibitions still apply.

Taiwan Car Theory Test: Suggested Study Strategy

1Use the current official question bank and video materials alongside this text study aid.
2Read signs, markings, signals, road status, lane count, and vehicle movement before applying a priority rule.
3Stop for crossing pedestrians; do not treat an enforcement-distance guideline as permission to pass close to someone.
4Distinguish shoulder-breakdown rules from vehicles stranded in a travel lane, and ordinary-road rules from freeway rules.
5Practice field maneuvers and road driving separately with appropriate instruction.

Frequently Asked Questions

What changed in the car written test in 2026?

From June 30, the test uses 50 selected-response questions rather than the older 40-question mixed format, including five hazard-perception video questions. The official passing standard is 85/100.

Can I take the official written test in English?

Yes. Written versions include Chinese, English, Japanese, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Thai, Burmese, and Khmer. Audio services also include Taiwanese Hokkien and Hakka. Request the required service when booking; this independent four-option bank is not the official translation or simulator.

What are the main eligibility requirements?

For ordinary small vehicles, applicants must be at least 18, provide the required identity and photos, and pass the approved health and physical-fitness checks. Individual applicants ordinarily need a learner's permit held for three months; approved driving-school group applicants use the applicable 35-day route. Relevant foreign applicants need evidence of authorized stay or residence of at least six months, not necessarily six months remaining on a card.

Does passing the written test give me a driving license?

No. The ordinary small-vehicle route also includes practical field maneuvers and road driving. These MCQs cannot assess vehicle-control performance or replace practical instruction.

What fees and retest rules should I expect?

The full application fee is NT$450; an eligible single-subject retest within one year is NT$225. License issuance is NT$200, and medical, training, and test-vehicle fuel costs can be additional. Failed written or practical tests have a seven-day wait; confirm your retest eligibility with the office.

What score is needed?

The official threshold is 85/100. With fifty two-point questions, seven errors give 86 points and eight errors give 84, so at least 43 correct answers are needed.
