About the telc Português B1 Exam
The telc Português B1 is a standardised European Portuguese language certificate issued by telc gGmbH, a non-profit language-test provider based in Frankfurt and a full member of the Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE). It certifies CEFR B1 proficiency — the level at which a learner can cope independently with everyday and work-related situations in Portugal and other Portuguese-speaking contexts. telc offers Portuguese at the B1 level only. The exam has a written part (Exame Escrito) and an oral part (Exame Oral). The written part comprises Compreensão de Leitura (Reading, 75 points), Módulos Linguísticos (Language Elements, grammar and vocabulary, 30 points), Compreensão Auditiva (Listening, 75 points) and Expressão Escrita (Writing, a semi-formal letter, 45 points). The three receptive sections use multiple-choice and text-matching formats and are machine-marked from an S30 answer sheet. The oral part (75 points) is a paired or individual speaking test in three stages: social contact, discussion of a topic, and a problem to solve together. Out of a maximum of 300 points, candidates must score at least 180 overall and at least 60% on each of the written and oral parts to receive the Certificado de Português. The certificate is recognised by employers and educational institutions in Germany and abroad as proof of intermediate Portuguese.
