About the TCF Canada Exam

TCF Canada is FEI's French proficiency test for Canadian immigration and citizenship procedures accepted by IRCC. It measures four compulsory skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. The two receptive sections contain 39 four-option MCQ items each; the two production sections contain three tasks each. Items follow a fixed progressive sequence rather than adapting to the candidate. FEI reports skill results against CEFR bands, while IRCC uses the actual component scores to assign NCLC levels. The six production tasks remain written or face-to-face oral performances and are not MCQ.

Assessment

Four compulsory sections: Compréhension de l'oral (39 MCQ, 35 minutes), Compréhension des écrits (39 MCQ, 60 minutes), Expression écrite (3 production tasks, 60 minutes), and Expression orale (3 face-to-face tasks, 12 minutes including 2 minutes of preparation). Total duration: 2 hours 47 minutes.

Time Limit

2 hours 47 minutes total: CO 35 minutes, CE 60 minutes, EE 60 minutes, and EO 12 minutes including 2 minutes of preparation.

Passing Score

No single pass/fail threshold. FEI reports each skill separately. IRCC assigns NCLC levels from the actual component scores, with different score ranges for listening, reading, speaking and writing.

Exam Fee

Set by the approved test centre and variable by location; confirm the current amount directly with your chosen centre. (France Éducation international (FEI); TCF Canada results are recognised by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC))

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the TCF Canada and which sections are compulsory?

TCF Canada is administered by France Éducation international and recognised by IRCC for Canadian immigration and citizenship procedures. Every candidate takes all four sections: oral comprehension, written comprehension, written expression and oral expression. The official total is 78 MCQ items plus six production tasks.

How does IRCC convert TCF Canada scores to NCLC levels?

IRCC uses the score for each component, not a one-to-one CEFR conversion. NCLC 4: listening 331–368, reading 342–374, speaking and writing 4–5. NCLC 5: listening 369–397, reading 375–405, speaking and writing 6. NCLC 6: listening 398–457, reading 406–452, speaking and writing 7–9. NCLC 7: listening 458–502, reading 453–498, speaking and writing 10–11. NCLC 8: listening 503–522, reading 499–523, speaking and writing 12–13. NCLC 9: listening 523–548, reading 524–548, speaking and writing 14–15. NCLC 10 or higher: listening and reading 549–699, speaking and writing 16–20.

What CEFR bands does FEI report for TCF Canada?

For the objective listening and reading scales, FEI's bands are: 0–100, A1 not reached; 101–199, A1; 200–299, A2; 300–399, B1; 400–499, B2; 500–599, C1; and 600–699, C2. For speaking and writing scores out of 20: 0, A1 not reached; 1, A1; 2–5, A2; 6–9, B1; 10–13, B2; 14–17, C1; and 18–20, C2. IRCC nevertheless assigns NCLC from the component-score table rather than converting a CEFR label directly.

How long is a TCF Canada result valid, and when can I retake the test?

FEI states that the attestation is valid for two years from the date the results are issued. For Express Entry, IRCC requires the test results to be less than two years old both when you create your profile and when you submit your permanent-residence application. In 2026, FEI requires a 20-day interval before retaking the same TCF version (déclinaison).

Is TCF Canada the same as TCF Québec or TCF Tout Public?

No. They are different versions of the TCF intended for different procedures. Use the version required by the authority handling your application and verify that requirement on the current FEI and government pages before registering.

How should I use this 100-question practice bank?

Use it for additional listening-transcript and reading practice across a progressive range of difficulty. It is a 100-item internal receptive bank, not an 84-task official-form simulation. Prepare separately for the three written and three face-to-face oral production tasks.
