1Which vehicle combination belongs to Slovak driving-licence group DE under Act No. 8/2009 Z. z.?
A.A group D bus with a trailer whose maximum authorised mass exceeds 750 kg
B.A group D bus with a trailer whose maximum authorised mass is at most 750 kg
C.A group D1 minibus with a trailer whose maximum authorised mass exceeds 750 kg
D.A group C truck with a trailer whose maximum authorised mass exceeds 750 kg
Explanation: Section 75(16) of Act No. 8/2009 puts into group DE combinations made up of a group D motor vehicle and a trailer whose maximum authorised mass exceeds 750 kg. A group D bus may tow a trailer of up to 750 kg on a plain D licence.
2Before Slovakia grants group DE, which licence group must the applicant already have?
A.Group CE
B.Group D
C.Group B, held for at least five years
D.Groups D1 and BE together
Explanation: Under § 76(16) of Act No. 8/2009, group DE may be granted only to an applicant who already holds group D. Group B is the prerequisite for D itself.
3Which other licence groups does a Slovak group DE licence also cover?
A.C1E, CE and T
B.D1E and BE, but not T
C.D1E, BE and T
D.CE and D1E, but not BE
Explanation: Section 76(16) of Act No. 8/2009 says that group DE also entitles the holder to drive groups D1E, BE and T. It does not cover truck combinations such as C1E or CE.
4From what age can a Slovak applicant normally be granted group DE?
A.21 years
B.18 years
C.23 years
D.24 years
Explanation: Section 78(1)(f) of Act No. 8/2009 sets 24 years as the minimum age for groups A, D and DE. Section 78(8) allows D and DE from 21 only under special conditions.
5Which route lets an applicant obtain group DE in Slovakia before turning 24?
A.Basic qualification course, or a D1/D1E driver qualification card
B.Holding group D for at least one year without causing an accident
C.Only for school bus routes, under a national restriction code
D.Only if a bus operator applies for the licence on their behalf
Explanation: Section 78(8) of Act No. 8/2009, as amended by Act No. 131/2026 from 1 September 2026, allows groups D and DE from 21 if the applicant has completed the basic qualification course or holds a driver qualification card for passenger vehicles of group D1 or D1E.
6Your coach (maximum authorised mass 19,000 kg) tows a luggage trailer on a motorway. May you overtake another motor vehicle?
A.Yes, because the motorway overtaking ban applies to goods vehicles only
B.No, because the combination's maximum permissible mass exceeds 7,500 kg
C.Yes, because buses are exempt from motorway restrictions
D.Only on motorways with three or more lanes in your direction
Explanation: Section 35(3) of Act No. 8/2009 forbids overtaking on a motorway by category N vehicles over 7,500 kg and by any vehicle combination whose maximum permissible mass exceeds 7,500 kg. A coach with a trailer is such a combination, even though the coach alone may overtake.
7On a road with three marked lanes in your direction outside a municipality, when does the § 10(2) lane restriction apply to your 12 m coach?
A.Always, because every bus over 3,500 kg is covered
B.Never, because buses carrying passengers are exempt
C.Only when it tows a trailer, as a combination over 7 m
D.Only when it carries more than 30 passengers
Explanation: Section 10(2) of Act No. 8/2009 lists trucks over 3,500 kg, vehicle combinations longer than 7 m, special motor vehicles and slow motorcycles; a solo bus is not listed. With a trailer your coach becomes a combination over 7 m and may then overtake only in the second lane from the right.
8Your coach and luggage trailer, 16 m long, cross a town on a dual carriageway with two marked lanes each way. Where must you normally drive?
A.Any lane you like, because in a town drivers may choose lanes freely
B.The left lane, so that cars can stop in the right lane
C.The lane that leads to your next bus stop, wherever that stop is
D.The right lane; other lanes only to bypass, overtake, turn or U-turn
Explanation: Section 10(3) of Act No. 8/2009 lets most drivers in a municipality use any lane, but not drivers of combinations longer than 7 m. For them § 10(1) and (2) apply in towns too, so they keep to the right lane and use other lanes only to bypass, overtake, make a U-turn or turn.
9Your coach tows a trailer. May passengers travel in the trailer?
A.Only in a trailer built for carrying persons, on its designated places
B.Yes, on luggage trailers, if they sit on the floor away from the doors
C.Yes, if the combination's speed does not exceed 30 km/h
D.No; carrying persons in any kind of trailer is prohibited without exception
Explanation: Section 46(1) of Act No. 8/2009 allows persons to be carried in a motor vehicle or its trailer designed for carrying persons, on the designated places and up to the number of places in the registration certificate. Section 46(3) prohibits carrying persons in any other trailer, apart from the tractor-trailer cases in § 49.
10On a Sunday your coach (18,000 kg) tows a luggage trailer on a class I road. Does the § 39 driving ban apply?
A.Yes, from 06:00 to 22:00, because it tows a trailer
B.No, because buses are exempt under § 39(3)(a)
C.Yes, but only on motorways, not on class I roads
D.Only if the trailer exceeds 3,500 kg
Explanation: Section 39(1) of Act No. 8/2009 bans motor vehicles over 7,500 kg and motor vehicles over 3,500 kg with a trailer on motorways, roads for motor vehicles and class I roads at set times. Section 39(3)(a) exempts buses, so a coach with a trailer is not caught.

About the Slovakia Theory Test DE Exam

Group DE covers combinations of a group D bus (built for more than 8 passengers besides the driver) and a trailer whose maximum authorised mass exceeds 750 kg, such as a heavy luggage or ski trailer. It can be granted only to a group D holder, normally from age 24 (from 21 after the basic qualification course or with a D1/D1E driver qualification card). Applicants take an electronic theory test before the driving test: 40 random questions in 30 minutes, three answer choices each, and a pass mark of 90 out of 100 points (Decree 9/2009 § 18). DE-specific pool questions cover coupling and uncoupling, ABS pairing, braking a bus with a trailer on descents and combination rules. The test is offered in Slovak, English and Hungarian. This independent OpenExamPrep bank has 80 original English four-option questions, two for each official question slot, written from Act 8/2009, Decree 9/2009, Decree 30/2020, Regulation (EC) No 561/2006 and the MV SR pool. It is an English-language study aid, not the official question pool, a translation of it or an exam simulation.

Exam sponsor: Ministry of Interior (MV SR) exam commissioners conduct the exam (Act 8/2009, § 80(1)); the driving school registers the candidate with the Policajný zbor traffic inspectorate (§ 80(2)); the question pool is published on minv.sk. The requirements and fees below concern the certification or admission exam, separate from our free practice resources.

Assessment

The proficiency exam for group DE starts with an electronic theory test and continues with a driving test on a group D bus with a closed-body trailer of at least 1,250 kg maximum authorised mass (Decree 9/2009, § 22(2)(o)). Under Decree 9/2009 § 18 the theory test has 40 random questions from the MV SR pool in the same ten areas as other groups; for group DE one safe-driving question is replaced by a question on the driver's responsibility for passengers and one documents question by a working-time question, and the construction questions include the trailer coupling device and its check (§ 18(10)(m)). The test is available in Slovak, English and Hungarian. Official questions have three answer choices; this independent bank uses four-option questions.

Slovakia Theory Test DE: Suggested Study Strategy

1Remember the speed rule: a solo bus may travel up to 100 km/h on motorways, but a trailer over 750 kg limits the combination to 90 km/h, and the trailer's design speed may lower it further.
2Know your passenger duties: use the hazard-warning function while children or disabled passengers board or alight (§ 47(2)), never exceed the registered number of places (§ 46(1)), and carry persons in a trailer only if it is built for them (§ 46(3)).
3Understand coupling and pre-trip checks: check that the coupling is locked, attach the safety or breakaway cable, connect the lines, and verify the trailer's lights and brakes.
4Review brake dynamics: never couple a trailer over 3.5 t without ABS behind a bus with ABS, and on slippery descents brake with the service brake while keeping a gear engaged.
5Learn drivers' hours: 4.5 hours maximum driving before a 45-minute break (or 15 + 30 minutes), regular daily rest of 11 hours (or 3 + 9 split), and roadside checks covering the current day plus the previous 56 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are on the Slovakia group DE theory test?

The electronic test has 40 randomly selected questions from the MV SR question pool. You have 30 minutes and need at least 90 of 100 points; questions are worth 1 to 4 points.

Can I take the Slovak DE theory test in English?

Yes. Decree 9/2009 § 18(16) states that the test is available in Slovak, English and Hungarian. These OpenExamPrep questions are independent English practice, not an official translation of the question pool.

Who can apply for group DE in Slovakia?

A holder of group D. The minimum age is 24, or 21 for applicants who completed the basic qualification course or hold a driver qualification card for D1 or D1E (Act 8/2009, §§ 76(16) and 78). Group DE also entitles the holder to drive groups D1E, BE and T.

How much does the group DE exam cost?

Act 145/1995 fee schedule item 74(a) sets 100 EUR for the exam to obtain group DE; the same item covers C, CE and D. A repeat exam costs 25 percent of the fee. From 1 September 2027 the fee is split into 40 EUR for theory and 60 EUR for the driving test.

What is the speed limit for a bus towing a trailer in Slovakia?

Under Act 8/2009 § 16(3), a bus towing a trailer whose maximum authorised mass exceeds 750 kg may drive at most 90 km/h outside built-up areas, including motorways, and a posted higher limit cannot raise this (§ 16(6)). A bus with a trailer of up to 750 kg keeps the bus limits of 90 km/h, or 100 km/h on motorways.

How is this practice bank different from the official test?

Official questions have three answer choices. This bank has 80 original four-option questions with explanations, two for each official question slot. It is an independent study aid and does not reproduce the official pool.
