1In the authorization examination of the Slovak Chamber of Architects (SKA), how long does the non-public written test last, and what result is needed to pass it?
A.60 minutes; at least half of the questions answered correctly
B.45 minutes; at least three-quarters of the questions answered correctly
C.45 minutes; at least two-thirds of the questions answered correctly
D.90 minutes; at least two-thirds of the questions answered correctly
Explanation: Article 15(3) of the SKA Examination Rules (Skúšobný poriadok, as amended with effect from 10 September 2026) sets the written test at 45 minutes and treats it as passed when the candidate answers at least two-thirds of the questions correctly. The test checks knowledge of generally binding legal regulations and Slovak technical standards needed for the reserved activities in construction.
2Under the SKA Examination Rules, what happens to a candidate who does not pass the written test of the authorization examination?
A.The candidate does not continue to the public debate and is regarded as having failed the examination
B.The candidate continues to the public debate, where a strong portfolio defence can offset the written result
C.The candidate may resit only the written test later the same day before the same senate
D.The candidate's result is deferred until the authorization committee reviews the practice logbook
Explanation: Under Article 15(3) of the Examination Rules, passing the written test is the condition for taking part in the public debate (verejná rozprava). A candidate who fails the written test does not continue with the public debate and is treated as having failed the authorization examination.
3What forms the basis (podklad) of the public debate (verejná rozprava) in the SKA authorization examination for architects?
A.A design task set by the examination senate on the day and solved by the candidate on site
B.The candidate's written test, which the senate goes through question by question with the candidate
C.A list of statutory questions on the Building Act published in advance by the Chamber
D.The candidate's portfolio and the works in it, which the candidate explains and defends publicly
Explanation: Article 16(4) of the Examination Rules states that the portfolio and the works presented in it are the basis of the public debate. Under § 21(2) of Act No. 138/1992 Zb., the oral part is a defence of the candidate's own works made during the recorded professional practice and a check of the ability to practise independently, including model situations, permitting procedures, supervision and contracts.
4Under § 16b of Act No. 138/1992 Zb., what professional practice must an applicant complete before authorization as an architect, and how is it documented?
A.Two years of practice after graduation with any construction employer, documented by reference letters
B.Three years of practice after completing education under supervision, recorded in the practice logbook
C.Three years of practice that may start during studies, documented by the university's diploma supplement
D.Five years of practice after graduation under an authorized architect, documented in the construction diary
Explanation: Section 16b requires three years of professional practice performed after completing education under the supervision of an authorized person or within their studio or office. For architects, landscape architects and spatial planners the practice is proved by the practice logbook (knižka odbornej praxe), with entries confirmed by the supervising authorized person.
5An applicant who completed all three years of practice in a Bratislava studio submits signed reference letters instead of a practice logbook. How does the Slovak Chamber of Architects treat this?
A.The references are accepted if each one is signed by an authorized architect
B.The references are accepted together with the employer's payroll records
C.The logbook is required; it cannot be replaced by individual references
D.The references are enough if the portfolio contains at least five built works
Explanation: The Chamber's authorization pages and Article 8 of the Examination Rules state that the practice logbook must contain continuous entries confirmed by the supervising authorized person and is not replaceable by individual references. Another credible document is accepted only for practice performed in another state where a logbook is not used, which does not apply to practice in Slovakia.
6Which statement about the portfolio submitted with an application for the SKA authorization examination is correct?
A.It may be compiled by the supervising architect's office on the candidate's behalf
B.It must contain only competition entries and unbuilt studies, not built works
C.It is presented on paper at the examination itself and is not attached to the application
D.It is filed electronically with the application and prepared by the candidate personally
Explanation: Article 7(7) of the Examination Rules provides that the portfolio is an electronic attachment to the application (a single PDF in A3 or A4 format) and, because it also presents the candidate's own creative abilities, it must be prepared by the candidate personally. It documents the content of the supervised practice and should give priority to realized works of which the candidate is author or co-author.
7What fee does the Slovak Chamber of Architects charge for the authorization examination (úhrada za odbornú skúšku) under its fee schedule in force since 10 September 2026?
A.€150, payable only after the candidate passes the written test
B.€500, payable together with the application for registration
C.€350 for every applicant, regardless of age
D.€350, reduced to €250 for applicants younger than 30
Explanation: Article 2 of the Chamber's fee schedule (Úhrady za výkony SKA) sets the examination fee at €350, or €250 if the applicant is younger than 30. It is payable no later than when the application is submitted; €150 is the separate fee for first entry in the register, paid before the oath.
8Under § 23 of Act No. 138/1992 Zb., when and before whom does a successful candidate take the professional oath (sľub)?
A.Within six months of the examination, before the chair of the Office for Spatial Planning and Construction
B.Within one month of the examination, before the Chamber president or a vice-president designated by them
C.Immediately after the public debate ends, before the chair of the senate that heard the candidate
D.Within one year of the examination, before the authorization committee at a public session
Explanation: Section 23(1) allows the oath only after the authorization examination and requires it to be taken into the hands of the Chamber president or a vice-president designated by the president within one month of the examination. The oath is one of the conditions for entry in the register under § 15(1)(a).
9Under § 23(3) of Act No. 138/1992 Zb., by when is a successful candidate entered in the register after taking the oath, unless they ask for a different date?
A.Within 30 days of the oath
B.On the next scheduled examination date
C.Within three days of the oath
D.Within ten working days of the oath
Explanation: Section 23(3) provides that entry in the register takes place within three days of the oath. This does not apply to a repeated entry, before which no oath is taken, or where the architect asks for another date of entry. Services may be provided only from the day of entry (§ 3(19)).
10Under § 12 of Act No. 138/1992 Zb., when must an authorized architect conclude professional liability insurance for damage caused in practice?
A.Within ten days after being entered in the register
B.Before submitting the application for the authorization examination
C.Only when a single contract with a client exceeds €50,000
D.Within one year after being entered in the register
Explanation: Section 12(2) requires the architect to conclude a liability insurance contract within ten days after entry in the register and to notify the Chamber. The insurance must last for the whole period of registration (§ 12(4)), and an uninsured architect is struck from the register (§ 17(1)(i)).

Slovak Authorized Architect Exam: Suggested Study Strategy

1Read the Chamber's current list of regulations for the examination (Prehľad právnych predpisov ku skúške) and always study the version of each law in force on your exam date.
2Learn the 2025 Building Act's terminology, such as stavebný zámer, overovacia doložka and kolaudačné osvedčenie, rather than the instruments of the repealed Act No. 50/1976 Zb.
3Memorize the key deadlines: 30/60 days for binding opinions, two years' validity of a stavebný zámer decision (three for reserved and linear buildings), and one month for the oath.
4Practise explaining your portfolio works aloud, including your role, the permitting procedure, author's supervision and the contracts used, because the public debate tests these topics.
5Review the SKA Code of Ethics and the disciplinary measures in § 39 of Act No. 138/1992 Zb., which are frequent sources of practical questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the SKA authorization examination for architects consist of?

Under § 21 of Act No. 138/1992 Zb. and the SKA Examination Rules, it has a non-public written test lasting 45 minutes on legal regulations and Slovak technical standards, and a public debate (verejná rozprava) of usually up to 30 minutes in which the candidate defends the works in their portfolio. Only candidates who pass the written test continue to the debate.

What is the pass mark?

The written test is passed when at least two-thirds of the questions are answered correctly. The examination senate then grades the public debate 'vyhovel' (passed) or 'nevyhovel' (failed), and decides whether the candidate passed the whole examination.

Who can apply, and what must the application include?

Applicants need architectural education recognized under §§ 16 to 16c of the Act, at least three years of practice after graduation under supervision, a practice logbook, a portfolio prepared by the candidate, a criminal-record extract not older than three months, proof of payment and a declaration of truthfulness. Applications are filed electronically between the 60th and the 30th day before the chosen date.

What happens after passing the examination?

The authorization committee decides on eligibility for registration, the candidate takes the professional oath within one month of the examination, and entry in the register follows within three days of the oath. The architect must conclude liability insurance within ten days of registration and may provide services only from the day of entry.

In which language is the examination held, and is this bank official?

The examination is held in Slovak, and the public debate may also be held in Czech (§ 21(8) of the Act). This bank is independent English-language multiple-choice practice prepared by OpenExamPrep; it is not an official translation or a past paper, and it does not simulate the written test or replace practising the oral defence of your portfolio.
