1Which early texts, written in Carolingian minuscule around the turn of the first millennium, are the oldest preserved continuous records of a Slovene (Alpine Slavic) language and the oldest Slavic texts in the Latin alphabet?
A.The Stična Manuscript (Stiški rokopis)
B.The Celovec or Rateče Manuscript (Celovški/Rateški rokopis)
C.The Freising Manuscripts (Brižinski spomeniki)
D.The Stara Gora Manuscript (Starogorski rokopis)
Explanation: The Freising Manuscripts (Brižinski spomeniki), dated to roughly 972–1039, are the earliest continuous texts in a Slovene language and the oldest Slavic texts written in Latin script. They were preserved in a codex from Freising in Bavaria and contain confessional formulas and a sermon on sin and penance.
2Which two books by Primož Trubar, dated 1550, are regarded as the first printed books in the Slovene language?
A.Ta celi Novi testament and Cerkovna ordninga
B.Biblija and Hišna postila
C.Arcticae horulae succisivae and Biblija
D.Katekizem and Abecednik
Explanation: Trubar's Catechismus (Katekizem) and Abecedarium (Abecednik) of 1550 are the first printed Slovene books. They were long assumed to have been printed in Tübingen, but research published in 2013 showed they were most probably printed by Peter Frentz in Schwäbisch Hall.
3Which structure describes the Italian (Petrarchan) sonnet that France Prešeren used in 'Sonetni venec' and 'Sonetje nesreče'?
A.Three quatrains rhyming ABAB CDCD EFEF followed by a rhyming couplet GG
B.Two quatrains rhyming ABBA ABBA followed by two tercets such as CDE CDE or CDC DCD
C.Four tercets in chain rhyme ABA BCB CDC DED followed by a single closing line
D.Eight-line stanzas rhyming ABABABCC repeated without a fixed number of stanzas
Explanation: Prešeren's sonnets follow the Italian model: an octave of two quatrains with enclosed rhyme (ABBA ABBA) and a sestet of two tercets (for example CDE CDE or CDC DCD), written in the Italian hendecasyllable (laški enajsterec).
4In France Prešeren's wreath of sonnets ('Sonetni venec'), what poetic device binds the fourteen individual sonnets and generates the concluding fifteenth master sonnet (Magistrale)?
A.All fifteen sonnets end with the same refrain line, which the Magistrale repeats as its final line
B.The middle line of each sonnet is mirrored in the next sonnet, so the whole wreath forms a chiastic ring
C.The first word of every stanza is collected to build the Magistrale as a separate dedicatory poem
D.Each sonnet opens with the previous sonnet's last line; the Magistrale joins the 14 opening lines into an acrostic
Explanation: In Prešeren's wreath, each sonnet begins with the line that closed the one before it, and the fourteenth closes with the first line of the first. The fifteenth sonnet, the Magistrale, is made of the opening lines of sonnets 1–14 in order, and its initial letters spell the acrostic PRIMICOVI JULJI, addressed to Julija Primic.
5In which Ivan Cankar drama does the teacher Jerman refuse to change his convictions when his colleagues switch political allegiance after the clerical party wins an election?
A.Za narodov blagor (For the Good of the Nation)
B.Kralj na Betajnovi (The King of Betajnova)
C.Hlapci (Serfs)
D.Pohujšanje v dolini šentflorjanski (Scandal in St. Florian's Valley)
Explanation: In 'Hlapci' (published 1910), Jerman stays true to his free-thinking views while the other teachers hurry to please the victorious clerical side. The play's title and Jerman's speeches condemn the servility (hlapčevstvo) Cankar saw in Slovene society.
6The four central figures of the Slovene Modern (Slovenska moderna, 1899–1918) whose poetry and prose reshaped Slovene literary culture were:
A.France Prešeren, Matija Čop, Stanko Vraz, and Jernej Kopitar
B.Simon Jenko, Fran Levstik, Josip Jurčič, and Janko Kersnik
C.Srečko Kosovel, Anton Podbevšek, Edvard Kocbek, and Ciril Kosmač
D.Ivan Cankar, Oton Župančič, Dragotin Kette, and Josip Murn Aleksandrov
Explanation: The quartet of Slovenska moderna comprises Ivan Cankar, Oton Župančič, Dragotin Kette, and Josip Murn Aleksandrov. Their collective emergence around 1899 (marked by Cankar's 'Erotika' and Župančič's 'Čaša opojnosti') integrated symbolism, decadence, and impressionism into Slovene literature.
7Which avant-garde poetic form is most prominently associated with the constructivist phase of the Karst poet Srečko Kosovel?
A.Konsi (constructivist montage poems)
B.Sonetje nesreče (Sonnets of Misfortune)
C.Gazele (ghazals built on repeated rhyme)
D.Dume (reflective poems on the homeland)
Explanation: Srečko Kosovel's constructivist poems, the 'konsi', combine word montage, unusual typography, mathematical and chemical signs, and slogans to express the crisis of modern Europe. Most were published posthumously, notably in the collection 'Integrali '26' (1967).
8What is the dual (dvojina) in standard Slovene grammar?
A.An archaic verbal aspect that survives only in passive constructions in poetry
B.An optional dialect form allowed only in personal pronouns such as midva and vidva
C.A grammatical number used for exactly two, marked on nouns, adjectives, pronouns and verbs
D.A special case ending used only for paired body parts such as eyes and ears
Explanation: Slovene has three grammatical numbers: singular, dual and plural. The dual is used for exactly two people or things and requires agreement across the noun phrase and the verb, for example 'dva študenta bereta'.
9Which case in standard Slovene grammar is governed by negated transitive verbs (e.g., 'Nimam časa' instead of 'Nimam čas')?
A.Genitive case (rodilnik)
B.Accusative case (tožilnik)
C.Dative case (dajalnik)
D.Locative case (mestnik)
Explanation: Standard Slovene requires the genitive of negation (zanikani rodilnik): when a transitive verb is negated with the particle 'ne' or negative verbs like 'nimati', the direct object shifts from the accusative to the genitive case.
10In Josip Jurčič's 'Deseti brat' (1866), regarded as the first Slovene novel, who is the 'tenth brother' of the title?
A.Lovre Kvas
B.Marijan
C.Graščak Benjamin
D.Martinek Spak
Explanation: Martinek Spak is the mysterious wanderer who calls himself the 'tenth brother', a figure from Slovene folk belief about a tenth child doomed to roam. The novel reveals that he is the abandoned son of the manor lord Piškav, and therefore Marijan's half-brother.

About the Splošna matura Exam

Splošna matura is Slovenia's state school-leaving examination for gimnazija students, run by Državni izpitni center (RIC) under the Matura Act (ZMat). Passing it completes secondary education and is the general entry requirement for university study programmes. Candidates sit five subjects, each combining an externally set written exam (multiple-choice, short-answer and essay tasks) with an internal oral, practical or seminar part. This independent OpenExamPrep resource is an English-language multiple-choice study adaptation covering selected Slovene, mathematics, English, science and humanities content. It is not an official translation, a simulation of the matura's format, or a substitute for essay writing, oral exams or laboratory work.

Exam sponsor: Državni izpitni center (RIC) / National Examinations Centre, with the State Commission for the General Matura. The requirements and fees below concern the certification or admission exam, separate from our free practice resources.

Assessment

Three common-part subjects (Slovene, or Italian or Hungarian as mother tongue in nationally mixed areas; mathematics; a foreign language such as English, German, French, Italian, Spanish or Russian) and two electives from about two dozen subjects in languages, sciences, social sciences, humanities, arts and technical fields. Each subject combines an externally set and externally marked written exam with an internal part (oral exam, practical or laboratory work, or a seminar paper). Mathematics and foreign languages can be taken at basic or higher level.

Time Limit

Varies by subject. 2026 written exams: Slovene 120 + 90 minutes; mathematics 90 + 90 minutes; most electives 90 + 90 minutes; foreign languages about 60 + 20 + 90 minutes (reading and language use, listening, writing). Oral exams are held at school.

Passing Score

Grade 2 (zadostno) or higher in every subject on the 1–5 scale. Slovene and higher-level papers are also scored 1–8 points, giving a maximum overall result of 34 points; at least 30 points has so far earned the certificate with distinction (zlati maturant).

What is the passing standard for the General Matura?

A candidate must reach at least grade 2 (zadostno) in every subject. The overall result is the sum of the subject results, up to 34 points when two subjects are taken at higher level; the State Commission sets the threshold for distinction each year, and so far it has been 30 points.

How much does the Splošna matura cost?

Students taking the matura at the end of their gimnazija programme pay nothing. Candidates without student status and 21-letniki pay €28.00 per exam or €140.00 for the full matura, the price RIC set from 1 September 2026.

Does this practice bank simulate the real Splošna matura?

No. The official exams are in Slovene (or Italian or Hungarian in nationally mixed areas) and combine multiple-choice, short-answer and essay tasks with oral, laboratory or seminar work. This independent bank offers English-language multiple-choice questions for reviewing knowledge; it does not replace practice with past papers, essays or oral exams.
