1Why do large two-stroke crosshead engines have a piston rod stuffing box (diaphragm) between the scavenge space and the crankcase?
A.So the piston can rotate in the liner to even out wear
B.To keep scavenge residues out of the crankcase oil
C.So no exhaust valve is needed in the cylinder cover
D.To take the side thrust instead of the crosshead guides
Explanation: The crosshead and guides take the connecting rod's side thrust, so the piston rod moves straight up and down through the stuffing box. Its scraper and sealing rings stop drained cylinder oil, combustion residues and acids from reaching the crankcase oil.
2An out-of-phase (draw) card shows the pressure rise delayed past TDC, a low peak pressure and a high exhaust temperature for that unit. What is the likely cause?
A.Early injection, giving hard combustion and knocking
B.A cracked liner letting cooling water onto the piston
C.A fouled turbocharger giving too much charge air
D.Late injection; burning continues into expansion
Explanation: With late injection, combustion starts after TDC and the peak pressure stays low. More fuel burns during expansion, so less work is done and more heat leaves with the exhaust.
3A six-cylinder two-stroke engine has a bore area of 0.2827 m² and a stroke of 2.0 m. At 100 rpm the mean indicated pressure is 18.0 bar. Using P = pmi × L × A × n per cylinder, what is the total indicated power?
A.About 10,177 kW
B.About 5,089 kW
C.About 1,696 kW
D.About 20,354 kW
Explanation: For a two-stroke, n is revolutions per second: 100 ÷ 60 = 1.667. Per cylinder P = 1.8 × 10⁶ Pa × 2.0 m × 0.2827 m² × 1.667 s⁻¹ ≈ 1,696 kW, and six cylinders give about 10,177 kW.
4What is the main operational advantage of an electronically controlled (camshaftless) two-stroke engine over a camshaft engine?
A.It needs no turbocharger or charge air cooler
B.It can burn only distillate fuels, which are cleaner
C.Free injection and valve timing at any load
D.It has no crankshaft and drives a generator directly
Explanation: A hydraulic power supply and electronically controlled valves replace the camshaft, so injection timing, injection profile and exhaust valve timing can be optimised for each load, including low-load and emission modes.
5On a low-pressure dual-fuel engine running on gas (Otto cycle), what is methane slip and why does it matter?
A.Gas leaking from the double-walled pipes into the engine room
B.Unburned gas slipping into the exhaust
C.Methane absorbed into the cylinder lubricating oil
D.Boil-off gas lost from the LNG fuel tank vent
Explanation: Some premixed gas escapes combustion, for example from crevices around the piston or during scavenging, and leaves with the exhaust. Methane's global warming effect over 100 years is many times that of CO2, so slip reduces the climate benefit of LNG.
6How does a high-pressure gas injection two-stroke engine (Diesel cycle) differ from a low-pressure Otto-cycle gas engine?
A.Gas is premixed with scavenge air at low pressure
B.Spark plugs ignite the gas in each cylinder
C.Gas is burned only at low load, with oil at sea speed
D.High-pressure gas into a pilot flame near TDC
Explanation: Pilot oil ignites first, and gas is injected at high pressure near TDC into the flame, as in a diesel engine. Because there is no premixed charge, knocking is avoided and methane slip is very low.
7What usually causes a scavenge space fire in a two-stroke crosshead engine?
A.Oily carbon in the scavenge space lit by blow-by
B.Using low-sulphur gas oil instead of residual fuel
C.An overheated charge air cooler circulating pump
D.Stray current through the shaft earthing device
Explanation: Excess cylinder oil and carbon collect in the scavenge space. Hot gas blowing past worn, broken or sticking piston rings ignites them. Regular cleaning and draining and good ring condition prevent it.
8A scavenge fire is found while the engine is running. What are the correct first actions?
A.Stop cylinder lubrication and drain the crankcase sump
B.Increase engine speed to blow the fire out quickly
C.Slow down, cut its fuel, raise its cylinder oil
D.Open the scavenge doors at once and attack with hoses
Explanation: Reduce speed, cut fuel to the affected unit and increase its cylinder lubrication to protect the piston. Keep scavenge doors closed. If the fire spreads, stop the engine and use the fixed extinguishing system; open doors only after cooling.
9How do primary and secondary crankcase explosions develop?
A.Water in the oil splits into hydrogen and oxygen
B.Hot-spot oil mist ignites; inrushing air re-ignites it
C.Exhaust gas leaks back into the crankcase and ignites
D.Air in the crankcase is compressed until it self-ignites
Explanation: A hot spot, such as a failing bearing, vaporises oil, which condenses into a fine mist. When the mist reaches a flammable concentration the hot spot ignites it. The blast and cooling create a partial vacuum that draws in air, which can cause a more violent secondary explosion.
10How do crankcase explosion relief valves, required by SOLAS II-1/27 on larger engines, protect people and the engine?
A.They spray water onto the crankshaft to cool it
B.They lock the crankcase doors so they cannot blow off
C.They inject inert gas when oil mist is detected
D.Vent via a flame trap at low pressure, then reclose
Explanation: SOLAS II-1/27 requires relief valves on engines with a bore of 200 mm or more or a crankcase volume of 0.6 m³ or more. They open quickly at a small overpressure, pass the gases through a flame arrester so no flames escape, and close immediately so air cannot rush in and cause a secondary explosion.

Sjöingenjör: Suggested Study Strategy

1Work engine power from first principles: indicated power = mean indicated pressure × stroke × bore area × firing strokes per second × cylinders.
2Read indicator cards by shape: late injection, early injection and leaking valves each leave a distinct pattern.
3Know generator paralleling cold: synchroscope direction, governor versus AVR roles, reverse power and preferential tripping.
4Learn the SOLAS figures engineers are tested on: emergency generator start and duration, steering gear timing and fire pump location.
5Keep MARPOL Annex VI current: Tier III NOx in the Baltic and North Sea NECAs, open- and closed-loop scrubbers, EEXI power limits and HCFC rules.
