1IMO Resolution A.893(21) on voyage planning divides the process into four stages. Which are they?
A.Drafting, reviewing, approving and archiving
B.Departure, coastal transit, anchoring and mooring
C.Appraisal, planning, execution and monitoring
D.Pilotage, open passage, landfall and berthing
Explanation: The IMO guidelines describe appraisal (collecting all relevant information), planning (the berth-to-berth plan), execution (carrying out the plan, taking account of conditions) and monitoring (continuously checking progress against the plan).
2You steer 045° (true) at 10.0 knots through the water. The current sets 135° at 2.5 knots. What are your course and speed over the ground?
A.059° and 10.3 knots
B.031° and 10.3 knots
C.045° and 12.5 knots
D.059° and 12.5 knots
Explanation: The current acts at right angles to the heading, toward starboard. Drift angle = arctan(2.5 ÷ 10.0) ≈ 14°, so course over ground ≈ 045° + 14° = 059°. Speed over ground = √(10.0² + 2.5²) ≈ 10.3 knots.
3What does a wheel-over position (WOP) marked in the passage plan indicate?
A.Where the master takes over the watch from the officer of the watch
B.Where the autopilot must be switched off before a turn
C.Where the new course line starts on the chart
D.Where to apply helm so she steadies on the new track
Explanation: A vessel needs distance to turn (advance and transfer). The wheel-over position is placed before the waypoint so that, with the planned rudder angle and speed, she comes round onto the new track without overshooting. It is often monitored with a radar range or parallel index line.
4What makes an electronic navigational chart (ENC) 'official' for use in ECDIS?
A.Any vector chart loaded into a type-approved ECDIS
B.Issued by or for a national hydrographic office
C.A raster scan of a paper chart made by a chart dealer
D.A chart showing soundings only and no lights
Explanation: Official ENCs are issued by or on the authority of a government hydrographic office, such as Sjöfartsverket for Swedish waters. Only these can meet SOLAS chart carriage requirements in an ECDIS.
5You set the ECDIS safety contour to 7 m, but the ENC only contains 5 m and 10 m depth contours. What will ECDIS use as the safety contour?
A.The 5 m contour
B.The 10 m contour
C.A 7 m line interpolated by ECDIS
D.No contour, so the alarm is disabled
Explanation: If the chosen value is not an encoded contour, ECDIS uses the next deeper contour available, here 10 m. It never interpolates a new line, and the anti-grounding alarm uses the contour actually selected.
6Using the open-water squat formula Squat = Cb × V² ÷ 100, what is the approximate maximum squat for a vessel with Cb 0.70 at 12 knots?
A.0.50 m
B.2.02 m
C.0.25 m
D.1.01 m
Explanation: Squat = 0.70 × 12² ÷ 100 = 0.70 × 144 ÷ 100 = 1.008 m, about 1.01 m. Squat grows with the square of speed, so reducing speed is the most effective way to keep under-keel clearance.
7The same vessel (Cb 0.70, 12 knots) enters a narrow dredged channel. Using the confined-water formula Squat = Cb × V² ÷ 50, what is the squat now?
A.About 2.0 m
B.About 1.0 m
C.About 0.5 m
D.About 4.0 m
Explanation: Squat = 0.70 × 144 ÷ 50 = 2.016 m, roughly double the open-water value. In a confined channel the return flow under and around the hull is restricted, so the pressure drop and sinkage are greater.
8You must pass close to the starboard bank of a narrow fairway. How do you counter bank effect?
A.Increase speed and apply port helm to sheer away
B.Stop the engine and let her drift off the bank
C.Reduce speed and use some helm toward the bank
D.Keep full speed with the rudder held amidships
Explanation: Near a starboard bank the bow is pushed away to port while the stern is drawn toward the bank. Lower speed weakens the effect, and a little starboard helm (toward the bank) keeps her on track; stopping removes steering control.
9What is the abort point (point of no return) in a passage plan for a narrow port approach?
A.Where pilotage becomes compulsory
B.Where the passage plan ends and the berthing plan begins
C.Where the crew must be called to stations
D.The last point where you can still safely turn back
Explanation: Beyond the abort point there is no longer room to turn, stop or anchor safely. The decision to continue must be made before it, based on traffic, weather, equipment status and clearance at the berth.
10What is BSCD2000, which Sjöfartsverket is introducing as the reference level for Swedish chart depths?
A.A chart datum based on the lowest astronomical tide
B.A datum used only for the horizontal GNSS positions
C.A shared Baltic height reference; in Sweden, RH 2000
D.The mean sea level measured for the current year
Explanation: Baltic Sea Chart Datum 2000 is the internationally agreed height reference for Baltic charts; in Sweden it is the national height system RH 2000. When chart depths and water-level forecasts share it, actual depth is simply charted depth plus the current water level.

About the Fartygsbefäl klass VII Exam

Fartygsbefäl klass VII is a Swedish deck certificate trained to STCW Code section A-II/3. Under Transportstyrelsen's rights table it allows service as master on merchant ships up to 150 GT in inre fart and as chief mate or mate up to 500 GT in närfart, with further rights in inre fart. It requires an approved course, such as Linnaeus University's 45-credit Fartygsbefäl klass VII taught in Swedish, plus qualifying sea service. This independent bank is an English-language MCQ study adaptation.

Exam sponsor: Transportstyrelsen (rules and certificates); training and exams by approved providers. The requirements and fees below concern the certification or admission exam, separate from our free practice resources.

Fartygsbefäl klass VII: Suggested Study Strategy

1Practise squat, trim, FWA/DWA and current-triangle calculations until you can do them quickly with a calculator.
2Learn how ECDIS chooses the safety contour and why low CATZOC areas need bigger margins.
3Work through relative-motion radar plots: find CPA, then the target's true course, aspect and who gives way.
4Know the stability dangers that sink small coastal ships: free surface, water on deck, heavy lifts and firefighting water.
5Read Sjölagen 6 kap. 14 §, 8 kap. 4 § and 20 kap. 4–5 §§ yourself for reporting, collision duties and sjöfylleri.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can you do with Fartygsbefäl klass VII?

Transportstyrelsen's rights table allows a holder to serve as master on merchant ships up to 150 GT in inre fart and as chief mate (överstyrman) or mate up to 500 GT in närfart, with mate rights on larger ships in inre fart. A restricted 'inre fart' version exists with lower sea-service requirements.

How is the qualification obtained?

Complete an approved course meeting STCW A-II/3, such as Linnaeus University's 45-credit Fartygsbefäl klass VII, then apply to Transportstyrelsen with qualifying sea service (36 months' deck service with the stated merchant-ship and närfart time, or 6 months' approved onboard training via Kalmar or Chalmers), a VHF certificate and four STCW safety certificates. You must be at least 18.

How is the course assessed?

At Linnaeus University the course is graded Pass or Fail, and each sub-course has its own assessment: written exams, simulator and practical exercises, web tests and assignments. There is no single national exam with a published item count.

Is this practice bank official?

No. It is independent practice by OpenExamPrep. The course is taught and examined in Swedish; this bank is an English-language MCQ study adaptation, not an official translation or a simulation of the course assessments.
