1Under Federal Law No. 297-FZ (Article 15), which machines belong to self-propelled machine Category AII?
A.Off-road vehicles up to 3,500 kg permitted mass with no more than 8 seats besides the driver's
B.Off-road motorcycle-type vehicles such as snowmobiles and quad bikes, of any engine size
C.Wheeled machines with an engine power over 110.3 kW, whatever their purpose
D.Off-road motor vehicles with a permitted maximum mass over 3,500 kg, whatever the number of seats
Explanation: Article 15(1) of Federal Law No. 297-FZ defines Category AII as off-road motor vehicles (внедорожные автотранспортные средства) with a permitted maximum mass of no more than 3,500 kg and no more than 8 seats besides the driver's. The official Category AII tickets use the same definition.
2What is the primary function of a Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS / централизованная подкачка шин) equipped on an all-terrain vehicle?
A.To keep tyre pressure fixed at the maximum value whatever the terrain
B.To supply compressed air only to the brake system
C.To let the driver change tyre pressure from the cab to suit the ground conditions
D.To inflate the tyres only when the vehicle is parked in a workshop
Explanation: A central tyre inflation system lets the driver check and change tyre pressure in all wheels from the cab. Lower pressure improves flotation on snow and bog; higher pressure reduces tyre heating and rolling resistance on firm roads. The official Category AII tickets note that lowering pressure improves cross-country ability but reduces load capacity and permitted speed.
3According to the official Category AII tickets, what happens when an off-road vehicle's tyre pressure is lowered from the maximum to the minimum permitted value?
A.Load capacity and permitted speed both increase
B.Tyre pressure has no effect on load capacity or permitted speed
C.Only fuel consumption changes; load capacity and speed limits stay the same
D.Load capacity and permitted speed both decrease
Explanation: The official Category AII tickets state that lowering tyre pressure from the maximum to the minimum permitted value reduces the vehicle's load capacity and its permitted speed. Low pressure improves cross-country ability, but driving fast or heavily loaded at minimum pressure overheats and damages the tyres.
4What is the consequence of driving on a dry, hard-surfaced public road with the inter-wheel differential locks (межколесные блокировки) fully engaged?
A.Better fuel economy because the wheels turn at the same speed
B.Driveline wind-up, rapid tyre wear and poor steering in turns
C.Better cornering grip and shorter braking distances
D.No effect, because the locks release automatically on hard surfaces
Explanation: When an inter-wheel differential lock is engaged, both wheels on an axle are forced to rotate at identical speeds regardless of cornering radius. On high-friction pavement, this prevents natural wheel speed differentiation, causing intense torsional stress (driveline windup) throughout axles and shafts, rapid tire scrubbing, and severe understeer that prevents normal cornering.
5Under which operational conditions should the operator engage the mechanical differential locks on an all-terrain vehicle?
A.After the vehicle has dug in and the wheels are spinning at high engine speed
B.While driving at speed on a hard road, so the lock is already engaged when the terrain changes
C.Before entering difficult ground, with the vehicle stopped or moving slowly in a straight line without wheel slip
D.Only while turning sharply, to help the vehicle pivot
Explanation: Differential locks are engaged before difficult ground, with the vehicle stopped or creeping straight ahead without wheel slip. The official Category AII tickets list locking the centre differential while the wheels are spinning as an unacceptable action, because the shock load can break the lock and driveline parts.
6If a Category A II vehicle equipped with hydrostatic or hydraulic power-assisted steering suffers an engine stall while moving, what is the expected steering response?
A.The steering wheel locks rigidly and cannot be turned at all
B.Steering becomes lighter because the hydraulic resistance disappears
C.The steering automatically centres and locks straight ahead
D.Steering becomes much heavier, but the driver can still steer mechanically
Explanation: If the engine stalls, the power-steering pump stops and the assistance is lost. Steering then needs much more effort, but the mechanical connection remains, so the driver can still steer to a safe stop.
7When should the operator shift the transfer case into low range (пониженная передача / демультипликатор)?
A.Only with the vehicle at a complete stop, before entering difficult ground
B.While driving at full road speed, to get an overdrive effect
C.Whenever the air temperature drops below −10 °C, even on paved roads
D.Only when reversing, at any speed on level hard ground
Explanation: The official Category AII tickets state that reverse gear and transfer-case range changes may be selected only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop. Changing range while moving can damage the unsynchronised gears and dog clutches.
8When driving a Category A II vehicle through deep, uncompacted virgin snow (целина), what is the correct driving technique?
A.Drive in the highest possible gear and rapidly pump the service brakes to pack the snow ahead
B.Maintain maximum tire pressure to allow the tires to slice through the snow down to frozen ground
C.Make rapid, sharp steering zig-zags to carve a wide trench for the rear tires
D.Lower tyre pressure within limits, use a low gear and keep moving steadily without wheel spin
Explanation: Deep loose snow calls for maximum flotation and steady momentum: lower tyre pressure within the permitted range, select a low gear and avoid wheel spin. The official Category AII tickets also advise packing a starting strip about 20 m long and moving off in a gear that keeps the engine at peak-torque speed.
9What is the primary operational rule when traversing open peat bogs and muskeg (болота I–II категории) on ultra-low-pressure tires?
A.Avoid wheel spin, sharp turns and sudden throttle so the surface root mat stays intact
B.Spin the wheels continuously at high RPM to paddle through the underlying peat slurry
C.Inflate tires to maximum pressure to cut cleanly through the upper roots down to solid clay
D.Always follow directly in the deep ruts left by preceding tracked tractors
Explanation: In bogs the vehicle's flotation depends on the living root and moss mat (дерновина). Wheel spin, sharp turns and sudden throttle tear the mat and let the wheels sink into the peat below. The official Category AII tickets also warn against driving in single file in the same track over boggy meadow, because each vehicle breaks the mat further.
10What is the correct method for ascending a steep, loose incline in an all-terrain vehicle?
A.Diagonally across the slope face, steering back and forth
B.Straight up the slope in a gear chosen beforehand, without changing gear
C.At top speed in a high gear, then coasting up with the clutch disengaged
D.In reverse gear with the differential locks disengaged
Explanation: The official Category AII tickets direct the driver to select, before the climb, the gear that gives enough traction to climb the whole slope without changing gear or stopping. The climb is made straight up the slope, because driving across it adds rollover risk.

About the Gostekhnadzor Category AII — Off-Road Motor Vehicles ≤3500 kg Exam

Category AII covers off-road motor vehicles with a permitted maximum mass of no more than 3,500 kg and no more than 8 seats besides the driver's (Federal Law No. 297-FZ, Art. 15), such as wheeled all-terrain vehicles on low-pressure tyres. The right to drive them is confirmed by a tractor-driver licence with Category AII issued by the regional Gostekhnadzor body after theory and practical examinations under Government Decree No. 796. Candidates must be at least 19 and hold a Russian driving licence of the corresponding category for at least 12 months. Since 7 July 2026, Article 15(2.2) of 297-FZ (as amended by Law No. 207-FZ) also lets a B, C or D driving licence confirm the right to drive a rented AII machine after the provider's briefing, with B and C holders required to be 19 and to have held the licence for 12 months. The theory test uses the Ministry of Agriculture's Category AII ticket book (2021 edition: 45 tickets of 8 questions), covering safe operation, technical condition, water and ice crossings, towing, liability and first aid. OpenExamPrep's bank is an independent English-language MCQ study adaptation; it is not an official translation and does not replace accredited training or the practical examination.
