PLIDA (Progetto Lingua Italiana Dante Alighieri) is the official certification of Italian as a foreign language issued by the Società Dante Alighieri. The B1 level certifies that a candidate can understand the main points of clear standard messages on familiar matters regularly met at work, school and in leisure, can cope with most travel situations, and can produce simple connected texts on topics of personal interest. The exam covers four skills — Ascoltare (Listening), Leggere (Reading), Scrivere (Writing) and Parlare (Speaking) — and only the two receptive sections are closed-response: Listening has 20 items in four parts and Reading has 18 items in four parts, including multiple choice, information matching, paragraph insertion and title matching.
