About the PLIDA A2 Exam
PLIDA A2 (Progetto Lingua Italiana Dante Alighieri) is the elementary-level certificate of the PLIDA system, issued by the Società Dante Alighieri to certify proficiency in Italian as a foreign or second language. Aligned with level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, it confirms that a candidate can understand and use frequently encountered everyday language about personal details, family, shopping, the local area, health, travel and work, and can communicate in simple routine situations. The exam is divided into four skills — Ascoltare (Listening), Leggere (Reading), Scrivere (Writing) and Parlare (Speaking) — each marked out of 30, with a minimum of 18/30 required in every skill to gain the certificate. The two receptive skills, Listening and Reading, are entirely closed-response: Listening has 15 items in two parts (25 minutes) and Reading has 12 items in three parts (40 minutes), built around authentic adverts, notices, messages and short dialogues. PLIDA is officially recognised by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Education, and holders of a PLIDA A2 certificate can be exempted from the language test required for the EU long-term residence permit in Italy.
