1Which statement correctly distinguishes engine torque (moment obrotowy) from engine power (moc) in a heavy goods vehicle?
A.Torque is the rate at which the engine does work, while power is the twisting force delivered at the crankshaft
B.Torque and power are the same quantity expressed in different units
C.Torque is the turning force at the crankshaft; power is the rate of doing work (torque × engine speed)
D.Torque depends only on the gearbox ratio, while power depends only on the amount of fuel injected
Explanation: Torque (Nm) is the twisting force the crankshaft delivers; it is what pulls a loaded truck away and up a hill. Power (kW) is the rate at which work is done and is proportional to torque multiplied by engine speed, so an engine can produce high power at high rpm even though its torque peak is lower down the rev range.
2In a typical modern Euro VI truck diesel engine, where in the rev range is maximum torque usually available?
A.Across a broad low-speed band, roughly 1,000–1,400 rpm
B.Only close to the governed maximum engine speed
C.Only at idle, around 600 rpm
D.Above 2,500 rpm, where maximum power is also reached
Explanation: Modern heavy-duty diesels are designed with a flat torque plateau at low engine speed, typically about 1,000–1,400 rpm. Driving in this band lets the truck pull strongly while burning less fuel; the exact figures are shown on the manufacturer's torque curve for the engine.
3What does the green band (zielone pole) on a truck's rev counter indicate?
A.The engine speeds at which the engine brake cannot be used
B.The engine speed above which the engine risks over-revving and the governor starts cutting the fuel supply
C.The rev range intended only for idling while the vehicle is stationary
D.The economical rev range, where specific fuel consumption is low and torque is sufficient
Explanation: The green band marks the range of engine speeds where the engine runs most economically: specific fuel consumption (grams of fuel per kWh) is low and there is enough torque to pull the load. Keeping the needle in the green band by choosing the right gear is a basic rational-driving habit.
4A loaded truck increases its speed from 40 km/h to 80 km/h. By what factor does its kinetic energy, which the brakes must absorb to stop it, increase?
A.2 times
B.4 times
C.8 times
D.It does not change, because the mass is unchanged
Explanation: Kinetic energy is E = ½·m·v². Doubling the speed multiplies v² by 2² = 4, so the brakes must turn four times as much energy into heat. This is why braking distance grows much faster than speed.
5What is the main advantage of using a hydrodynamic retarder (intarder) on a long downhill gradient?
A.It increases engine power so the truck can descend faster
B.It replaces the parking brake and holds the truck stationary whenever it is stopped on the slope
C.It brakes continuously without wear, keeping the service brakes cool for an emergency stop
D.It locks the trailer wheels to keep the combination straight
Explanation: A hydrodynamic retarder slows the driveline by churning oil between a rotor and a stator, and the heat is carried away by the cooling system. Because it does not use friction linings, it can brake for long periods without the service brakes overheating and losing effectiveness (brake fade).
6Why must a retarder be used with great care, or switched off, on an icy road when the truck is lightly loaded or empty?
A.It brakes only the drive axle, so on ice the drive wheels can slide and the combination jackknife
B.It drains the service-brake air reservoirs, leaving no pressure for the foot brake
C.It brakes only the steering axle, so on ice the front wheels lose grip and the truck stops responding to steering
D.It cannot operate when the outside temperature is below 0 °C
Explanation: A driveline retarder acts through the drive axle. On ice or snow, especially with little weight on the drive axle, strong retarder torque can exceed the available grip and slow or lock the drive wheels relative to the trailer, starting a jackknife. Many vehicles let the ABS cut retarder torque, but the driver should still reduce or disable it on slippery roads.
7What is the function of the air dryer (osuszacz powietrza) in a truck's compressed-air braking system?
A.To raise system pressure above the governor's cut-out pressure for stronger braking
B.To remove moisture and oil from the air so valves do not corrode or freeze
C.To cool the engine's charge air before it enters the cylinders
D.To store compressed air for the spring parking brake
Explanation: The compressor delivers warm, moist air. The air dryer's desiccant cartridge removes water vapour and oil before the air reaches the reservoirs, preventing condensation that would corrode valves or freeze in winter. The cartridge must be replaced at the intervals the manufacturer specifies.
8How does a spring brake chamber (siłownik sprężynowy) apply the parking brake on a heavy goods vehicle?
A.Compressed air pushes the brake shoes onto the drums for as long as the parking brake is applied
B.An electric motor tightens a cable each time the ignition is switched off
C.Hydraulic fluid pressure clamps the brake discs
D.A strong mechanical spring applies the brake when the air holding it back is released
Explanation: In a spring brake chamber, compressed air keeps a powerful spring compressed while the vehicle is driven. Applying the parking brake vents that air, and the spring applies the brake mechanically. The design is fail-safe: if air pressure is lost, the springs apply the brakes.
9While a truck is being driven, the low air pressure warning lamp and buzzer come on. What should the driver do?
A.Pump the brake pedal repeatedly to rebuild pressure in the reservoirs
B.Continue to the next delivery point and report the fault to the workshop there
C.Stop safely as soon as possible, as braking may be reduced and the spring brakes may apply
D.Drive on at higher engine speed so the compressor can quickly restore the pressure lost from the reservoirs
Explanation: The warning means reservoir pressure has fallen below a safe level, so service braking may be reduced. If pressure continues to fall, the spring brakes can apply automatically. The driver should bring the vehicle to a safe stop, secure it and have the leak or compressor fault found before continuing.
10What is the main benefit of an electronically controlled braking system (EBS) on a tractor-semitrailer combination?
A.It replaces the compressed-air brakes with hydraulic brakes on all axles of the combination
B.Braking signals travel electronically, so tractor and trailer brake faster and more evenly
C.It lets the vehicle be parked without applying the spring brakes
D.It steers the vehicle around obstacles automatically
Explanation: EBS sends the driver's braking demand to the axle modulators as an electrical signal instead of relying only on pneumatic control lines. The brakes apply faster and braking forces can be balanced between tractor and trailer. A pneumatic control circuit remains as a back-up, and EBS normally integrates ABS and related functions.
