1What is the primary meaning of a circular traffic sign with a red border and a white background?
A.It imposes a prohibition or restriction that drivers must obey
B.It gives guidance about upcoming exits and tourist sites
C.It warns of a physical hazard on the road ahead
D.It gives an optional speed recommendation for bad weather
Explanation: The Oman Highway Code reserves the circular shape for regulatory signs. A red-bordered circle is prohibitory, for example a maximum speed limit, no entry for a vehicle class or no U-turn. Breaking these signs is a traffic offence.
2When approaching a circular traffic sign with a solid blue background displaying a white arrow pointing straight ahead, what action is required?
A.You are permitted to turn left or right if no oncoming vehicles are visible
B.You must proceed straight ahead only, as turns are strictly prohibited
C.You should stop completely before deciding which direction to proceed
D.You must reduce your vehicle speed to less than 20 km/h before turning
Explanation: Circular signs with a solid blue background and white symbols are mandatory regulatory signs under the Omani road sign standard. An arrow pointing straight ahead mandates that all vehicular traffic must proceed straight, making turns at that intersection illegal.
3What is an upward-pointing triangular road sign with a red border used for?
A.Mandatory instructions
B.Information and services
C.Warning of a hazard ahead
D.Priority at junctions
Explanation: The Oman Highway Code reserves the triangle for advance warning signs, such as bends, speed humps, falling rocks, animal crossings and floodways. They give you time to slow down and prepare for the hazard.
4When approaching an octagonal red sign bearing the word 'STOP' in English and 'قف' in Arabic, what must a driver do?
A.Slow down and proceed without stopping if the intersecting road appears clear
B.Sound the vehicle horn and proceed through the junction at moderate speed
C.Stop only if an approaching vehicle is within fifty metres of the intersection
D.Stop completely at the stop line, then go only when the road is clear
Explanation: The octagon is reserved for the STOP sign. The Oman Highway Code tells drivers to come to a complete stop at every stop sign, at the stop line if one is marked, and to drive on only when the road is clear. Ignoring a STOP sign is a listed ROP traffic offence.
5What is the legal requirement when approaching an inverted triangular road sign with a red border and white interior (Give Way sign)?
A.Slow down and yield right-of-way to traffic on the main road, stopping if necessary
B.Maintain highway speed because approaching drivers must merge around you
C.Bring the vehicle to a full stop for at least three seconds regardless of traffic conditions
D.Flash your high-beam headlights to notify cross-traffic that you intend to cross first
Explanation: An inverted triangular sign is the Give Way (Yield) regulatory sign. Under Omani traffic rules, drivers facing this sign must reduce speed and yield priority to all vehicles traveling along the intersecting roadway, stopping if necessary to ensure safe passage.
6What does a rectangular blue sign featuring a white letter 'P' alongside the wheelchair symbol designate?
A.A designated passenger pickup zone permitted for all commercial taxis
B.A parking space reserved for vehicles of people with disabilities
C.A paid public parking area open to all light vehicles
D.A technical inspection lane operated by the Royal Oman Police
Explanation: The wheelchair symbol marks a space reserved for disabled drivers or passengers. Article 105 of the Executive Regulations bans parking in places allocated to vehicles of the disabled, and Decision 32/2018 lists this as a first-category violation carrying 2 black points.
7What does a circular white sign with a red border containing the numeral '60' signify?
A.Vehicles must maintain an exact cruise control speed of 60 km/h at all times
B.The minimum legal travel speed on this road section is 60 km/h
C.The maximum permissible speed limit under optimal driving conditions is 60 km/h
D.The distance to the next highway service station is exactly 60 kilometres
Explanation: A circular sign featuring a red border with a black number inside specifies the maximum legal speed limit in kilometres per hour. In Oman, driving above this posted limit constitutes a punishable speeding offense detected by fixed and mobile radar systems.
8What does a circular sign with a solid blue background containing the white numeral '60' mean?
A.Motorists are prohibited from traveling faster than 60 km/h
B.Only commercial heavy trucks weighing over 60 quintals may use this lane
C.The road ahead will end in 60 metres, requiring an immediate detour
D.Vehicles must not drive slower than 60 km/h unless conditions require it
Explanation: Under Omani traffic sign conventions, a circular blue sign containing white numbers indicates a mandatory minimum speed limit. On expressways and designated high-speed corridors, vehicles must travel at or above 60 km/h to prevent obstructing flowing traffic, barring emergency or congested conditions.
9The Oman Highway Code shows a red-bordered circular sign with the outline of a car, labelled 'No entry for motor cars'. What does it mean?
A.Motor cars may not enter the road or lane beyond the sign
B.Only hybrid and electric cars may use the route
C.Cars must give way to trucks and buses
D.Cars may overtake on both sides
Explanation: Red-bordered circles are prohibitory signs. The Oman Highway Code shows a family of 'no entry for...' signs, each picturing the class excluded, such as motor cars, motorcycles, buses or goods vehicles. The car symbol bars motor cars from that road or lane.
10A round blue mandatory sign at a roundabout entry shows circulating arrows with the instruction 'Roundabout – give way to traffic from the left'. What does it require?
A.Entering drivers have priority over vehicles already circulating
B.Give way to vehicles already in the roundabout, which approach from your left
C.Drive straight across the central island when the roundabout is empty
D.Stop for at least five seconds whether or not any traffic is present
Explanation: The Oman Highway Code lists this mandatory sign as 'Roundabout – give way to traffic from left'. It matches Article 102 of the Executive Regulations, which gives priority to vehicles that have already entered the roundabout. In Oman you drive on the right, so circulating traffic reaches you from the left.

Oman ROP Driving Theory (Light): Suggested Study Strategy

1Read the Oman Highway Code – Light Vehicle (ROP, 2024); it quotes the Traffic Law and Executive Regulations articles behind most rules.
2Learn the sign shapes first: octagon for STOP, inverted triangle for give way, circles for regulatory signs, triangles for warnings and rectangles for information.
3Know Article 102 priority: vehicles already in a roundabout, then vehicles already in a junction, then the main road, then traffic from the right where roads are equal.
4Use the right lane at a roundabout to go straight or turn right, and the left lane to turn left or make a U-turn.
5Memorise the Decision 32/2018 points that drivers meet most: phone use 2 points, seat belt 1 point, child seat under 4 years 1 point, speeding over 75 km/h above the limit 3 points.
6Never cross a wadi when the water touches the red mark, and pull completely off the road with hazard flashers on if fog or sand becomes too dense to continue.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are on the ROP light vehicle knowledge test, and what is the pass mark?

ROP does not publish the number of questions, time limit or pass mark. Commercial websites quote figures such as 30 questions and 80%, but these are not ROP figures. ROP states only that the electronic knowledge test must be passed before booking the driving test, and it can be retaken without new fees.

In which languages is the electronic knowledge test offered?

The 2024 Oman Highway Code describes the electronic knowledge test, which covers traffic rules and ethics, signs and signals, as available in Arabic and English. These OpenExamPrep questions are written in English as independent study practice.

What happens after I pass all the stages?

You receive a one-year temporary licence for OMR 10. Under Article 51(7) of the Executive Regulations, up to 6 black points in that year means it is replaced by a full licence. Seven to 12 points renews it once for another year; more than 12 points cancels it and the test must be retaken.

When can a driving licence be withdrawn for black points?

Article 133 of the Executive Regulations, as amended by Decision 32/2018, allows a licence to be withdrawn for 3 months if violation points exceed 12 within one year of the first points-bearing violation.

Is it illegal to drive through a flowing wadi?

Article 49 of the Traffic Law makes it an offence to deliberately cross a wadi in a way that endangers lives, punishable by up to 3 months' imprisonment and/or a fine of up to OMR 500. The Oman Highway Code says never to cross when the water reaches the red mark on the depth poles.

Is this an official ROP practice test?

No. This is independent English-language multiple-choice practice by OpenExamPrep, based on the Traffic Law, the Executive Regulations and the Oman Highway Code. It does not copy or simulate the official ROP test, and it does not replace the practical driving stages.
