1Under Article 22 of Oman's Traffic Law, which vehicles require a heavy driving licence (رخصة سياقة ثقيلة)?
A.Vehicles whose unladen weight exceeds 3 tonnes, whatever their load
B.Any vehicle with more than two axles, regardless of its weight
C.Vehicles whose gross weight exceeds 6 tonnes
D.Vehicles longer than 10 metres, whatever their weight
Explanation: Article 22 of the Traffic Law (Royal Decree 28/93, as amended) divides licences into light, heavy, equipment and motorcycle. A light licence covers vehicles whose gross weight does not exceed 6 tonnes; a heavy licence covers vehicles whose gross weight exceeds 6 tonnes.
2Under Article 48 of the Executive Regulations, as amended by Decision 32/2018, which licence category is issued to a foreign resident?
A.The category matching the profession authorised for that resident
B.Any category the resident requests, as long as the tests are passed
C.A light licence only, because residents may never hold heavy licences
D.The highest category already held in the resident's home country
Explanation: Article 48, as amended by Decision 32/2018, states that the licence issued to a resident is in the category consistent with the profession authorised by the competent authority. The Oman Highway Code adds that an expatriate's licence follows the profession recorded with the labour authorities, so a resident driving trucks for work needs that profession on record.
3What is the minimum age to obtain a heavy vehicle driving licence in Oman?
A.18 years
B.19 years
C.25 years
D.21 years
Explanation: The Royal Oman Police service conditions on Gov.om set 18 years for light and motorcycle licences and 21 years for heavy vehicle and equipment licences. The Oman Highway Code – Heavy Vehicle repeats that the eligible age to apply for a heavy licence is 21.
4Under Article 42 of the Executive Regulations, as replaced by Decision 32/2018, how long is a renewed heavy vehicle licence valid for an Omani citizen?
A.10 years
B.5 years
C.2 years
D.1 year
Explanation: Article 42 sets validity at 10 years for light licences, 5 years for heavy vehicle and equipment licences and 10 years for motorcycle licences. For foreigners every licence class is valid for 2 years. New drivers first receive a one-year temporary licence.
5According to the Oman Highway Code – Heavy Vehicle, what must a learner pass before booking the heavy vehicle driving test?
A.An approved first-aid course run by a recognised institute
B.A written examination on vehicle mechanics and maintenance
C.The Heavy Vehicle Road Rules Electronics Test
D.An oral interview on the Traffic Law with an ROP officer
Explanation: The Oman Highway Code – Heavy Vehicle says the electronics test assesses general road rules as well as rules that relate solely to heavy vehicles. A learner may start lessons with a learner's licence but must pass the Heavy Vehicle Road Rules Electronics Test before booking the driving test.
6What does the Oman Highway Code – Heavy Vehicle say about the electronic knowledge test taken before the practical driving test?
A.It is offered only in English, because commercial drivers come from many countries
B.It may be taken only once, and failing it ends the licence application
C.It covers vehicle maintenance only, not traffic rules or signs
D.It is offered in Arabic and English, and can be retaken without new fees
Explanation: The Highway Code states that before the practical driving test there is an electronic knowledge test in Arabic and English covering traffic rules and ethics, signs and signals. Those who fail it may repeat it without paying any new fees.
7In what kind of vehicle must an applicant for a heavy vehicle licence take the practical driving test?
A.A vehicle whose dead weight is not less than 10 tonnes
B.Any light pickup, provided it is towing a loaded trailer
C.A vehicle of any weight, provided it is fitted with air brakes
D.A bus with at least 16 seats, whatever the licence sought
Explanation: Article 51 of the Executive Regulations, quoted in the Oman Highway Code, requires heavy licence applicants to be tested in a vehicle whose dead weight is not less than 10 tonnes. The Highway Code adds that the test vehicle must be registered and roadworthy.
8Which sequence matches the practical test stages listed in Article 51 of the Executive Regulations?
A.An engine check, a wheel change and a trailer coupling demonstration
B.A night drive, a desert-track drive and a mountain-road drive
C.A simulator session only, followed by a written exam on the simulator results and a short interview
D.Barriers forward and back, a ramp start without rolling back, then a road drive
Explanation: Article 51(3) sets the practical stages: (a) drive forward and backward between barriers on both sides, (b) drive up a raised passage, stop, then continue forward without reversing, and (c) drive on the road to show correct use of traffic rules, signals and signs. Article 51 also allows a simulator test before the road stage.
9A candidate passes the barrier stage but fails the ramp stage of the practical test. What happens at the next appointment?
A.All three stages must be repeated from the beginning
B.The candidate must first retake and pass the electronic test
C.Only the stages not yet passed are retested, after paying the fee
D.The candidate must wait one year before any further test
Explanation: The Oman Highway Code quotes Article 51: a new appointment is set for anyone who fails a practical stage after paying the fee, and the later test does not include any stage already passed. A written report records the reasons for failure.
10According to the Oman Highway Code – Heavy Vehicle, which statement about light and heavy licences is correct?
A.A light licence is not needed to apply for a heavy one, but you need one to drive light vehicles
B.You must hold a light licence for five years before you may apply for a heavy licence
C.A heavy licence automatically includes motorcycles and mechanical equipment
D.A heavy licence also covers every light vehicle, so a separate light licence is never needed by its holder
Explanation: The Oman Highway Code – Heavy Vehicle states that holding a light licence is not mandatory to apply for a heavy licence. It also states that a heavy licence does not permit you to drive a light vehicle unless you hold a valid light licence. ROP lists driving with a licence of another category as an offence.

Oman Heavy Vehicle Theory: Suggested Study Strategy

1Study the Oman Highway Code – Heavy Vehicle (ROP, 2024); its licensing, braking, space-management, loading and dangerous-goods sections cover most of this bank.
2Remember the air-brake delay: up to one second before the brakes act, about 17 metres at 60 km/h, so brake earlier than in a car.
3Choose your gear before a long descent and use retarders, but avoid retarders on wet or slippery roads because they can lock the drive wheels.
4Know the triangle layout on roads of 80 km/h and above when the vehicle cannot be seen from 300 metres: 200–250 metres behind, 200–250 metres in front and one beside it.
5Learn the key weight figures: 46 tonnes gross, 13 tonnes single axle, 8 tonnes single-tyre steering axle, 21 tonnes for two adjacent axles 1.35–2.50 metres apart.
6Follow the Land Transport rule of no more than 8 continuous driving hours in a working day, followed by at least 8 continuous hours of rest, and stop when you feel tired.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a separate theory test for a heavy vehicle licence in Oman?

Yes. The Oman Highway Code – Heavy Vehicle says learners must pass the Heavy Vehicle Road Rules Electronics Test, covering general road rules and rules that apply only to heavy vehicles, before booking the driving test. ROP does not publish its number of questions or pass mark.

What is the minimum age for a heavy licence, and do I need a light licence first?

The minimum age is 21. The Oman Highway Code – Heavy Vehicle states that a light licence is not mandatory to apply for a heavy licence, but a heavy licence does not let you drive light vehicles unless you also hold a light licence.

Do bus drivers take a separate ROP bus test?

No separate ROP bus licence exists. Oman's Traffic Law has four licence types: light, heavy, equipment and motorcycle. Buses above 6 tonnes gross weight need a heavy licence, and the Oman Highway Code – Heavy Vehicle includes a section on bus-driving skills.

How fast may trucks and heavy buses travel?

Article 95 of the Executive Regulations, as amended by Decision 32/2018, sets their maximum speed 20 km/h below the speed limit of the road. Speed signs often show two figures, such as 120/100, one for light and one for heavy vehicles.

What are the main weight limits?

Without a permit, a vehicle and its load may not exceed 46 tonnes, and any single axle may not exceed 13 tonnes (Executive Regulations, Article 37). The Land Transport Executive Regulations also set 8 tonnes for a single-tyre steering axle and up to 21 tonnes for two adjacent axles.

Is this an official ROP practice test?

No. This is independent English-language multiple-choice practice by OpenExamPrep, based on the Oman Highway Code – Heavy Vehicle, the Traffic Law and the Executive Regulations. It does not copy or simulate the official ROP test and cannot replace the practical stages.
