1How many grams of dextrose are needed to prepare 500 mL of a 5% w/v dextrose solution?
A.2.5 g
B.5 g
C.25 g
D.50 g
Explanation: A 5% w/v solution contains 5 g of solute in every 100 mL. For 500 mL: 5 g x (500 / 100) = 25 g.
2Using the alligation method, in what ratio must 90% alcohol and 50% alcohol be mixed to obtain 60% alcohol?
A.1 : 3
B.3 : 1
C.1 : 2
D.2 : 3
Explanation: Alligation alternate: parts of 90% = 60 - 50 = 10; parts of 50% = 90 - 60 = 30. The ratio is 10 : 30 = 1 : 3. Check: (1 x 90 + 3 x 50) / 4 = 60%.
3What is the sucrose concentration of Simple Syrup as described in the British and Indian Pharmacopoeias?
A.85% w/v
B.50% w/w
C.66.7% w/w
D.45% w/v
Explanation: BP/IP Simple Syrup contains 66.7% w/w sucrose. At this near-saturated strength the high osmotic pressure restrains microbial growth, so the syrup needs no added preservative.
4Which acids are combined with sodium bicarbonate in effervescent granules so that carbon dioxide is released when they are added to water?
A.Citric and tartaric acids
B.Hydrochloric and sulfuric acids
C.Stearic and oleic acids
D.Boric and benzoic acids
Explanation: Effervescent granules combine sodium bicarbonate with citric and tartaric acids. In water the acids react with the bicarbonate to release carbon dioxide; the mixed acids also make the granules easier to form.
5Which ointment base, obtained from the fleece of sheep, is an absorption base that can take up about twice its weight of water to form a water-in-oil emulsion?
A.White soft paraffin
B.Macrogol (polyethylene glycol) ointment
C.Hard paraffin
D.Wool fat (anhydrous lanolin)
Explanation: Wool fat contains sterols and wool alcohols that act as water-in-oil emulsifiers, so it can absorb about twice its weight of water. Hydrous wool fat (lanolin) is wool fat that already contains 25-30% water.
6Why is a glidant such as colloidal silicon dioxide added to a tablet granulation?
A.To improve flow of granules from hopper to die
B.To bind particles and raise tablet hardness
C.To make the tablet break up faster in gastric fluid
D.To mask the odour of the active ingredient
Explanation: Glidants reduce friction between particles so the granules flow evenly from the hopper into the die. Even flow keeps die filling, and therefore tablet weight, uniform.
7Which container is most suitable for tablets that are both light-sensitive and hygroscopic?
A.Clear glass bottle with a screw-cap closure
B.Amber bottle, airtight, with a desiccant
C.Clear PET bottle, tightly closed
D.Amber paper envelope, folded shut
Explanation: Amber glass or plastic filters out the light wavelengths that cause photodegradation, an airtight closure keeps out moisture, and a desiccant absorbs any moisture that gets in.
8When preparing an extemporaneous suspension of an insoluble powder, which ingredient acts as the suspending agent by increasing viscosity?
A.Light liquid paraffin
B.Kaolin
C.Lactose monohydrate
D.Compound tragacanth powder
Explanation: Compound tragacanth powder (tragacanth, acacia, starch and sucrose) hydrates in water to form a viscous colloid that slows sedimentation of the dispersed drug.
9How does a pharmaceutical elixir differ from a syrup?
A.Elixir: alcohol-free solution; syrup: sugar solution containing alcohol
B.Elixir: hydroalcoholic solution; syrup: concentrated sugar solution
C.Elixir: suspension of fine powder; syrup: clear sugar solution
D.Elixir: for external application; syrup: for oral use only
Explanation: An elixir is a clear, sweetened and flavoured hydroalcoholic oral solution, in which alcohol helps dissolve the drug. A syrup is a concentrated aqueous solution of sugar.
10Which process reduces a dry substance to a fine powder by grinding it in a mortar with a pestle?
A.Levigation
B.Spatulation
C.Trituration
D.Pulverization by intervention
Explanation: Trituration is particle size reduction of a dry material by rubbing and grinding it in a mortar with a pestle. The term is also used for mixing powders in this way.
