1What is the core requirement of a contraction de texte (the French précis exercise)?
A.Summarise the text and then add a personal critical judgment of the author's thesis
B.Reduce the text to the required length while faithfully keeping the author's ideas and their order
C.Select and copy the author's key sentences in their original order to reach the required length
D.Rewrite the text from the opposite point of view to show command of argumentation
Explanation: A contraction de texte condenses a text to a set fraction or word count while staying faithful to the author's ideas, logical links and order of argument. It is written in the candidate's own words, without commentary.
2In a contraction de texte, from whose point of view should the summary be written?
A.From the candidate's point of view, opening with 'Je pense que…'
B.From an outside narrator's point of view, with phrases such as 'L'auteur affirme que…'
C.From the examiner's point of view, evaluating the strength of each argument
D.From the author's own point of view, as if the author had written a shorter version
Explanation: The contraction keeps the author's enunciation: it reads as a shorter version written by the author, so it uses the same person and stance as the original. Phrases like 'l'auteur affirme' belong to the résumé-analyse or commentary, not to the contraction.
3A source text of 1,200 words must be reduced to one quarter of its length, with a tolerance of ±10% stated in the instructions. What word range is acceptable?
A.270 to 330 words
B.250 to 350 words
C.285 to 315 words
D.200 to 400 words
Explanation: One quarter of 1,200 is 300 words. A ±10% tolerance is 30 words either side of 300, so the acceptable range is 270 to 330 words. Always apply the tolerance stated in the consigne for that paper.
4A 750-word text must be reduced to one third, with a ±10% tolerance. What is the acceptable range?
A.250 to 300 words
B.200 to 250 words
C.225 to 275 words
D.240 to 260 words
Explanation: One third of 750 is 250 words; 10% of 250 is 25, so the range runs from 225 to 275 words. The tolerance is applied to the target length, not to the original text.
5Under the common counting convention that a word is any group of letters separated by spaces or apostrophes, how many words are in « L'État n'a pas réagi » ?
A.4 words
B.5 words
C.6 words
D.7 words
Explanation: Under this convention the apostrophe separates words: L' / État / n' / a / pas / réagi, which makes 6 words. Conventions vary between papers, so always apply the definition printed in the consigne when one is given.
6Which element of an argumentative text should usually be removed first when condensing it?
A.Purely illustrative examples, anecdotes and digressions
B.The main thesis of the text
C.The logical connectors linking the arguments
D.The opening sentences of the main paragraphs
Explanation: Illustrative examples, anecdotes and digressions support an argument without being arguments themselves, so they are the first to go. An example that carries an argument on its own should be reduced to the general idea it proves rather than dropped.
7Why is reordering the author's arguments a serious fault in a contraction de texte?
A.Because it always makes the summary much too short for the required length
B.Because examiners check that the paragraph count matches the original text
C.Because it obliges the candidate to use more connectors than the author did
D.Because it distorts the author's demonstration and the links between causes and conclusions
Explanation: The contraction must follow the progression of the original: the order of ideas is part of the author's reasoning. Reordering can turn a premise into a conclusion or break a chain of cause and effect, which betrays the text.
8What is a 'contresens' in a contraction de texte, and why is it so heavily penalised?
A.A spelling mistake on a technical term, which lowers the language mark
B.Giving an idea the opposite meaning to the author's, which betrays the text
C.Exceeding the word limit by a few words, which breaks the consigne
D.Using a synonym instead of the author's exact term, which loses precision
Explanation: A contresens attributes to the author a meaning contrary to what the text says, for example turning a criticism into praise. Since the exercise tests understanding and fidelity, it is among the most serious faults, more serious than a faux sens (an approximate or shifted meaning).
9Which connector expresses a concession followed by a restriction, as in « ________ la croissance est forte, ________ elle reste peu créatrice d'emplois » ?
A.Certes… mais
B.En effet… donc
C.Puisque… alors
D.C'est-à-dire… ainsi
Explanation: « Certes… mais » (or « certes… toutefois / néanmoins ») first concedes a point and then restricts or rejects it. Keeping such pairs in a contraction preserves the nuance of the author's reasoning.
10In the sentence « Les récoltes ont été mauvaises. En effet, les pluies ont été tardives », what logical relation does « en effet » introduce?
A.A consequence of the previous sentence
B.An opposition to the previous sentence
C.A cause or justification of the previous statement
D.An additional, unrelated piece of information
Explanation: « En effet » introduces an explanation that justifies or confirms the previous statement: the late rains explain the poor harvests. Confusing it with a consequence marker reverses the cause and effect.

ENA Niger Niveau II: Suggested Study Strategy

1Before drafting a contraction, compute the target length and the tolerance bounds from the consigne, then map the author's main steps in order.
2Never add opinions or reporting phrases ('l'auteur affirme'); keep the author's voice, stance and order of ideas.
3For BSG, practise both baccalauréat maths (sequences, functions, probability) and commercial and financial maths (interest, discounting, percentages) without a spreadsheet.
4For SAD, master business-letter formulas (Dear Sir or Madam / Yours faithfully, please find enclosed) and common false friends (actually, eventually, agenda).
5Plan the 4-hour contraction paper: read twice, outline, draft, cut, count, then recopy neatly.
