This is an independent English-language MCQ study adaptation for the Mozambique INATRO Category B (Ligeiro) theory exam, which is taken in Portuguese. It covers the Código da Estrada (Decreto-Lei n.º 1/2011): priority to the right, overtaking on the right, stopping and parking distances, and speed limits of 60 km/h inside localities and 120 km/h outside for light cars. It also covers the 0.3 mg/l breath-alcohol threshold, two warning triangles at 30 m, and SADC road signs. INATRO does not publish the question count, time limit or pass mark online. It is not an official translation or format simulation.

1Under Mozambique's Código da Estrada (Decreto-Lei n.º 1/2011), on which side of the carriageway must vehicles normally travel?
A.On the right, keeping close to the right-hand verge
B.In the centre of the carriageway until oncoming traffic appears
C.On the left, as close to the verge or pavement as safety allows
D.On whichever side has the better road surface
Explanation: Article 17 of the Código da Estrada says traffic keeps to the left of the carriageway, as close as possible to the verges or pavements while leaving enough distance to avoid an accident. Mozambique drives on the left, and the right side may be used only for overtaking or changing direction when clearly necessary.
2Two cars reach an unsigned intersection of two public roads at the same time. Under Article 38 of the Código da Estrada, which driver has priority?
A.The driver who presents himself or herself from the right
B.The driver who presents himself or herself from the left
C.The driver of the faster vehicle
D.The driver of the heavier vehicle
Explanation: Article 38(3)(a) gives priority at unsigned intersections to drivers approaching from the right (prioridade à direita). The other driver must slow down or stop to let them pass, unless signs or other priority rules in the article apply.
3Under the Código da Estrada, who must give way when a car reaches a roundabout (rotunda)?
A.Traffic already in the roundabout must stop for the entering car
B.The car on the busier approach road has priority
C.Whichever driver signals first has priority
D.The driver entering the roundabout must give way
Explanation: Article 39(1)(d) lists drivers entering a roundabout among those who must give way (ceder passagem). Traffic already circulating therefore proceeds first, and entering drivers wait for a safe gap.
4A driver is leaving a fuel station forecourt to join a public road. Under Article 39 of the Código da Estrada, what must the driver do?
A.Proceed first if coming from the right of the road traffic
B.Give way to the traffic travelling on the public road
C.Sound the horn and enter at moderate speed
D.Wait only if a STOP sign is posted at the exit
Explanation: Article 39(1)(a) requires drivers leaving a car park, a fuel filling area, or any building or private road to give way. The general priority-to-the-right rule does not help someone coming out of such a place.
5On a congested urban road, an ambulance on an urgent mission approaches from behind with its warning signals on. What does Article 66 of the Código da Estrada require?
A.Speed up to stay ahead of the ambulance until the next junction
B.Stop immediately in the middle of your lane
C.Move as far left as possible, using the verge if necessary
D.Move to the right so the ambulance can pass on your left
Explanation: Article 66 requires every driver to give way to vehicles on urgent missions. When the road is congested, drivers must pull as far to the left as possible, using the verge (berma) if necessary, so that a passage is left on the right. On motorways the verge must be left free.
6Under Article 43 of the Código da Estrada, on which side is overtaking normally carried out?
A.On the left of the vehicle being overtaken
B.On the verge, when it is wide enough
C.On either side, after flashing the headlights
D.On the right of the vehicle being overtaken
Explanation: Article 43(2) states that overtaking vehicles or animals is done on the right. Overtaking on the left is allowed only in the specific exceptions listed in Article 43(3).
7When does Article 43 of the Código da Estrada allow a driver to overtake a road vehicle on the left?
A.When the driver ahead has signalled a right turn and left the left side free
B.When the vehicle ahead is slow and the straight road beyond it is clear
C.When it is raining and the view past the vehicle on the right is poor
D.Whenever the road has at least two marked lanes in each direction
Explanation: Article 43(3) allows overtaking on the left in two cases: vehicles running on rails, and vehicles whose driver has signalled a change of direction to the right and has left the leftmost part of the carriageway free. In all other cases overtaking is done on the right.
8Which of these places is listed in Article 44 of the Código da Estrada as a place where overtaking is prohibited?
A.A straight rural road with good visibility and a broken centre line
B.Immediately before and on a marked pedestrian crossing
C.A one-way street with two marked lanes in your direction
D.A dual carriageway with a central reserve
Explanation: Article 44(1) prohibits overtaking on hill crests, on bends with reduced visibility, immediately before and on level crossings, junctions and marked pedestrian crossings, and wherever visibility is insufficient or the road too narrow. It also prohibits overtaking a vehicle that is itself overtaking.
9A driver on a two-way road wants to turn right at a junction. How does Article 45 of the Código da Estrada say the manoeuvre is made?
A.Keep close to the left verge and make the turn from there
B.Move into the oncoming lane well before reaching the junction
C.Approach the centre line early and keep the junction centre on your left
D.Stop in the left lane and wait for a police officer to wave you on
Explanation: Article 45(2) requires drivers turning right to approach the axis of the road in good time and make the turn so that the centre of the junction stays on their left. Article 39(1)(c) also requires them to give way to oncoming traffic going straight on or turning left.
10How should a driver position the car to turn left at a junction under Article 46 of the Código da Estrada?
A.Move out to the centre line first and make a wide, sweeping turn
B.Approach in the right-hand lane and cut across at the corner
C.Stop at the corner and reverse slowly into the side road
D.Approach the left edge early and turn by the shortest path
Explanation: In left-hand traffic the left turn is the near-side turn. Article 46 requires the driver to approach the left margin of the carriageway in good time and make the turn by the shortest path, after signalling as Article 23 requires.

Mozambique INATRO Category B Driving Theory: Suggested Study Strategy

1Learn the Article 33 speed table by vehicle class: light cars 60 km/h inside localities and 120 km/h outside (100 km/h with a trailer); motorcycles 50 and 90 km/h.
2Remember that Mozambique keeps left: overtaking is on the right (Article 43), and at unsigned junctions priority goes to the right (Article 38).
3Memorise the stopping and parking distances: 5 m from junctions and pedestrian crossings, 10 m from level crossings, and 50 m from blind bends and crests outside localities.
4Study the SADC sign shapes and colours: warning triangles, white-on-blue command signs, and red-bordered prohibition signs.

Frequently Asked Questions
