1Which of the following is the correct expansion and simplification of (2x - 3)(x + 5)?
A.2x² + 7x - 15
B.2x² - 7x - 15
C.2x² + 10x - 15
D.2x² + 7x + 15
Explanation: Expanding using the distributive property: (2x)(x) + (2x)(5) + (-3)(x) + (-3)(5) = 2x² + 10x - 3x - 15 = 2x² + 7x - 15.
2Solve the linear equation for x: (2x + 5) / 3 = x - 1
A.x = 6
B.x = 8
C.x = 10
D.x = 12
Explanation: Multiply both sides by 3: 2x + 5 = 3(x - 1). Expanding the right side: 2x + 5 = 3x - 3. Subtract 2x from both sides: 5 = x - 3. Add 3 to both sides: x = 8. Verification: (2(8) + 5)/3 = 21/3 = 7, and 8 - 1 = 7.
3Simplify using the laws of indices: (3a²b³)² ÷ (9ab⁴)
A.a³b²
B.a²b²
C.9a³b²
D.a³b
Explanation: Square the numerator: (3a²b³)² = 3² × (a²)² × (b³)² = 9a⁴b⁶. Now divide by 9ab⁴: (9a⁴b⁶) ÷ (9ab⁴) = (9/9) × a^(4-1) × b^(6-4) = 1 × a³ × b² = a³b².
4Factorise completely the quadratic expression: x² - 7x + 12
A.(x + 3)(x + 4)
B.(x - 3)(x - 4)
C.(x - 2)(x - 6)
D.(x - 1)(x - 12)
Explanation: Look for two numbers that multiply to give +12 and add to give -7. These numbers are -3 and -4. Therefore, x² - 7x + 12 = (x - 3)(x - 4).
5Solve the simultaneous equations: 2x + y = 13 and x - y = 2
A.x = 4, y = 5
B.x = 5, y = 3
C.x = 6, y = 1
D.x = 3, y = 7
Explanation: Add the two equations: (2x + y) + (x - y) = 13 + 2, giving 3x = 15, so x = 5. Substitute x = 5 into the second equation: 5 - y = 2, so y = 5 - 2 = 3.
6Make r the subject of the formula: V = πr²h, where r > 0.
A.r = √(V / (πh))
B.r = V / (πh)
C.r = √(Vπh)
D.r = (V / πh)²
Explanation: Divide both sides by πh: r² = V / (πh). Take the positive square root of both sides: r = √(V / (πh)).
7Find the gradient of the line segment joining the points A(2, 3) and B(6, 11).
A.3
B.2
C.4
D.0.5
Explanation: Gradient m = (y₂ - y₁) / (x₂ - x₁) = (11 - 3) / (6 - 2) = 8 / 4 = 2.
8A straight line passes through the point (0, -4) and has a gradient of 3. What is the equation of the line?
A.y = 3x - 4
B.y = -4x + 3
C.y = 3x + 4
D.3y = x - 4
Explanation: The slope-intercept form is y = mx + c. Here the gradient m = 3 and the y-intercept c = -4. Substituting gives y = 3x - 4.
9A 10-metre ladder rests against a vertical wall. The base of the ladder is 6 metres away from the wall on level ground. How high up the wall does the ladder reach?
A.7 metres
B.8 metres
C.9 metres
D.√136 metres
Explanation: By Pythagoras' theorem: a² + b² = c², where hypotenuse c = 10 m and base a = 6 m. Height b = √(10² - 6²) = √(100 - 36) = √64 = 8 metres.
10In a right-angled triangle PQR, angle Q = 90°, PQ = 5 cm, and QR = 12 cm. What is the value of sin ∠PRQ?
A.5/13
B.12/13
C.5/12
D.12/5
Explanation: By Pythagoras' theorem, PR = √(5² + 12²) = √(25 + 144) = √169 = 13 cm. Sine of an angle = Opposite / Hypotenuse. For angle PRQ, the opposite side is PQ = 5 cm. Therefore, sin ∠PRQ = 5/13.

About the NCE Exam

The National Certificate of Education (NCE) is the end-of-Grade-9 national assessment in Mauritius, conducted by the Mauritius Examinations Syndicate to complete Nine-Year Continuous Basic Education. The 2026 Annual Programme sets written papers in nine core subjects: English, Mathematics, French, Science, ICT, Technology Studies, Business and Entrepreneurship Education, Social and Modern Studies, and Art and Design. Performing Arts, Physical Education, and Life Skills and Values are assessed in school. Subjects are graded 1 (85 and above) to 7 (below 35). The NCE is recognised at NQF Level 2 when the minimum conditions are met, and results inform subject choice, promotion to Grade 10 and admission to the academies. A January 2026 Ministry consultation included an option to abolish the NCE, but the 2026 assessment was gazetted and timetabled. This independent English-language MCQ bank is study practice for six NCE areas. The French items keep their French sentences. It is not an MES paper or translation.

NCE: Suggested Study Strategy

1Practise Mathematics without a calculator; the 2026 programme does not allow calculators in the NCE Mathematics paper.
2Treat Biology, Chemistry and Physics as three short 45-minute papers and revise each one separately.
3Keep French grammar practice in French; the official French paper is in French even though these explanations are in English.
4Remember that Social and Modern Studies and Art and Design are core subjects this bank does not sample.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Mauritius NCE?

It is the national end-of-Grade-9 assessment conducted by the Mauritius Examinations Syndicate. It completes Nine-Year Continuous Basic Education and informs promotion to Grade 10 and academy admission.

Which subjects are examined?

The 2026 programme lists nine compulsory core subjects: English, Mathematics, French, Science, ICT, Technology Studies, Business and Entrepreneurship Education, Social and Modern Studies, and Art and Design. Candidates may add one optional language. Three non-core subjects are assessed in school.

How is the NCE graded?

Each core subject gets a numerical grade from 1 to 7: grade 1 is 85 and above, grade 6 is 35 to 44, and grade 7 is below 35. Non-core subjects are reported as Proficient, Intermediate or Basic.

Is the NCE being abolished?

A January 2026 Ministry consultation included an option to abolish the NCE. The 2026 NCE was still gazetted and timetabled by the MES, so check the MES for later cohorts.

Does this bank reproduce official NCE papers?

No. Official papers are written and include structured and extended answers, and some subjects use school-based or pre-released tasks. These are independent English-language MCQs for revision, not an official translation or simulation.
