1Under the Registered Professional Engineers Council Act (RPEC Act), which person may lawfully use the title 'Registered Professional Engineer of Mauritius' (RPEM) and engage in the practice of professional engineering in Mauritius?
A.A graduate holding a Council-approved engineering degree who has received a Stage 1 Eligibility Letter
B.A trainee engineer who has completed 24 months of supervised training and submitted a Technical Report
C.A Chartered Engineer registered with the Engineering Council (UK) who is working in Mauritius on a local contract
D.A person whose name has been entered on the register after the Council approved their registration
Explanation: Section 18 of the RPEC Act entitles only persons registered as professional engineers to use the words 'Registered Professional Engineer of Mauritius' or 'RPEM', and section 19 makes it an offence for an unregistered person to use such titles or to engage in the practice of professional engineering. Eligibility, completed training and overseas chartered status are steps toward registration, not substitutes for it.
2A simply supported steel beam with a span of L = 6.0 m carries a central concentrated point load of P = 40 kN. Neglecting the self-weight of the beam, what is the maximum bending moment (M_max) developed in the beam?
A.30.0 kNm
B.120.0 kNm
C.240.0 kNm
D.60.0 kNm
Explanation: For a simply supported beam with a central point load P and span L, the maximum bending moment occurs at midspan and is M_max = (P × L) / 4. Here, M_max = (40 kN × 6.0 m) / 4 = 240 / 4 = 60.0 kNm.
3A solid circular steel shaft of diameter d = 50 mm is subjected to an axial tensile force of F = 150 kN. What is the normal tensile stress (sigma) induced in the shaft?
A.19.1 MPa
B.60.0 MPa
C.76.4 MPa
D.305.6 MPa
Explanation: Tensile stress is sigma = F / A. The cross-sectional area is A = pi × d^2 / 4 = pi × 50^2 / 4 = 1,963.5 mm^2, so sigma = 150,000 N / 1,963.5 mm^2 = 76.4 N/mm^2, which is 76.4 MPa.
4Water flows through a circular pipe with an internal diameter of 100 mm at an average velocity of 2.0 m/s. What is the volumetric flow rate (Q) through the pipe?
A.0.0157 m^3/s (15.7 L/s)
B.0.00785 m^3/s (7.85 L/s)
C.0.0628 m^3/s (62.8 L/s)
D.0.00393 m^3/s (3.93 L/s)
Explanation: Volumetric flow rate is Q = A × v. For D = 0.10 m, A = pi × D^2 / 4 = 3.1416 × 0.01 / 4 = 0.007854 m^2. Multiplying by v = 2.0 m/s gives Q = 0.0157 m^3/s, or 15.7 litres per second.
5For flow in a circular pipe, which Reynolds number (Re) criteria are commonly used to classify the flow as laminar or fully turbulent?
A.Laminar below about Re = 2,300; fully turbulent above about Re = 4,000, with a transitional range between
B.Laminar below about Re = 4,000; fully turbulent only above about Re = 100,000
C.Laminar below about Re = 500; fully turbulent above about Re = 1,000
D.Laminar below about Re = 2,300; turbulent immediately above it, with no transitional range
Explanation: For pipe flow, Re = rho × v × D / mu. Flow is generally laminar below about 2,300, transitional between about 2,300 and 4,000, and fully turbulent above about 4,000; the exact transition depends on pipe roughness and inlet disturbances.
6A three-phase 400 V (line-to-line), 50 Hz industrial induction motor draws an active power of P = 45 kW at a lagging power factor of 0.75. What rating of shunt capacitor bank is required to improve the overall power factor to 0.95 lagging?
A.14.8 kVAR
B.39.7 kVAR
C.54.5 kVAR
D.24.9 kVAR
Explanation: Initial reactive power Q1 = P × tan(theta1). With cos(theta1) = 0.75, tan(theta1) = 0.8819, so Q1 = 45 × 0.8819 = 39.7 kVAR. At the target cos(theta2) = 0.95, tan(theta2) = 0.3287, so Q2 = 45 × 0.3287 = 14.8 kVAR. The capacitor rating is Qc = Q1 - Q2 = 39.7 - 14.8 = 24.9 kVAR.
7In a TT earthing arrangement, where the supply neutral is earthed at the source and the consumer's installation is earthed through its own local earth electrode, why is a residual current device (RCD) normally relied on for protection against indirect contact?
A.Because the TT system has no neutral conductor, so overcurrent devices cannot sense load current
B.Because RCDs limit the prospective short-circuit current between line and neutral
C.Because the earth fault loop passes through the soil, its impedance is high, and the fault current may be too small to operate fuses or circuit-breakers quickly
D.Because the consumer's electrode is bonded to the supply neutral, making earth faults indistinguishable from load current
Explanation: In a TT system the earth fault current returns through the consumer's electrode, the general mass of earth and the source earth. That loop impedance is typically far too high for overcurrent devices to disconnect within the required time, so an RCD, which detects the imbalance between line and neutral currents, provides automatic disconnection at low fault currents.
8During a tensile test on a structural mild steel specimen, what distinct phenomenon occurs immediately after the upper yield point?
A.The stress drops to a lower yield point and the specimen yields at nearly constant stress as Lüders bands spread along the gauge length
B.The material undergoes immediate brittle cleavage fracture without plastic deformation
C.The elastic modulus increases with strain hardening up to the ultimate tensile strength
D.Localized necking begins immediately at the centre of the gauge length
Explanation: Mild steel shows a yield-point phenomenon: interstitial carbon and nitrogen atoms pin dislocations. Once the upper yield stress frees them, yielding continues at a slightly lower stress (the lower yield point) as deformation bands (Lüders bands) propagate along the specimen, before strain hardening begins.
9In coastal tropical environments such as Mauritius, what is the primary deterioration mechanism affecting reinforced concrete structures within marine exposure zones?
A.Alkali-silica reaction caused by reactive basalt aggregate
B.Sulfate attack from dissolved sulfates in rainwater
C.Chloride-induced depassivation of the reinforcement, leading to corrosion, expansive rust, cracking and spalling
D.Carbonation of the cover concrete by atmospheric carbon dioxide, which dominates over chlorides near the sea
Explanation: Airborne and splash chlorides penetrate the concrete cover. When the chloride concentration at the bar reaches a threshold, the passive film on the steel breaks down and electrochemical corrosion begins. The corrosion products occupy several times the volume of the original steel, generating tensile stresses that crack and spall the cover.
10A cantilever retaining wall with a stem height of H = 4.0 m retains dry cohesionless backfill with unit weight gamma = 18 kN/m^3 and an internal friction angle phi = 30 degrees. Using Rankine's theory, what is the total active thrust per metre run (P_a) on the wall?
A.48.0 kN/m
B.24.0 kN/m
C.72.0 kN/m
D.144.0 kN/m
Explanation: Rankine's active coefficient is K_a = (1 - sin phi) / (1 + sin phi) = (1 - 0.5) / (1 + 0.5) = 1/3. The resultant thrust is the area of the triangular pressure diagram: P_a = 0.5 × K_a × gamma × H^2 = 0.5 × (1/3) × 18 × 4.0^2 = 48.0 kN/m.

About the CRPE Engineer Registration Exam

Frequently Asked Questions

Is registration with the CRPE mandatory to practise engineering in Mauritius?

Yes. Section 19 of the Registered Professional Engineers Council Act makes it an offence for a person who is not a Registered Professional Engineer to use titles such as 'Registered Professional Engineer of Mauritius' or 'Professional Engineer', to hold themselves out as registered, or to engage in the practice of professional engineering. Section 20(c) allows unregistered staff to work only under a registered engineer's direct responsibility, checking and supervision, without making final designs or decisions.

What is the assessment process for CRPE registration?

Stage 1 (Eligibility) confirms that the engineering degree is acceptable. Stage 2 (Registration) requires at least 24 months of supervised training, a Technical Report assessed by at least two assessors, and a Professional Interview before two interviewers and one observer, which opens with a 10–15 minute presentation of no more than 6 slides excluding the introduction and conclusion.

What fees does the CRPE charge in 2026?

For Mauritian citizens, the CRPE's 2026 schedule lists Rs 1,000 for the Stage I online application (plus Rs 500 if referred for an eligibility interview), Rs 3,500 for a first Stage II application (Rs 2,000 for a second or third attempt), a Rs 5,000 registration fee on success, and a yearly fee of Rs 4,000 for engineers under 65. Different fees apply to extended-CV and foreign applicants.

How long does the Stage 2 assessment take?

The CRPE says external assessors review the report in about 15–20 days, the interview panel is then set up in a further 15–20 days, and the panel reports in about 15 days, so a decision can take up to about three months from submission, following approval at a Council meeting.

Does this question bank replace the official CRPE interview?

No. These English-language multiple-choice questions are an independent study aid by OpenExamPrep covering engineering fundamentals, project management, safety and environment, and ethics. They do not replace supervised training, the Technical Report or the Professional Interview.
