1In modern Mongolian Cyrillic orthography, how does vowel harmony (эгшиг зохицох ёс) govern the addition of case suffixes to masculine base words containing back vowels (эр үг: а, о, у)?
A.Masculine roots strictly take suffixes containing masculine vowels (а, о, у) matching the root vocalism.
B.Masculine roots take suffixes containing front vowels (э, ө, ү) to create phonetic balance across syllables.
C.Masculine roots require the neutral vowel 'и' in all case endings regardless of syllable count.
D.Masculine roots take invariable consonant-only suffixes without harmonic vowel alternation.
Explanation: Mongolian vowel harmony mandates that words with masculine back vowels (эр үг: а, о, у) must take suffixes containing corresponding masculine vowels (e.g., 'гал' -> 'галын', 'галд', 'галаас', 'галаар'). Front feminine vowels (э, ө, ү) cannot be attached to masculine stems.
2Which of the following demonstrates the correct application of feminine vowel harmony (эм үгийн эгшиг зохицох ёс) when adding the ablative case suffix (-аас, -ээс, -оос, -өөс) to the stem 'цөөрөм' (pond)?
A.цөөрөмөөс
B.цөөрмөөс
C.цөөрөмаас
D.цөөрөмөөрэй
Explanation: The feminine stem 'цөөрөм' contains the open rounded front vowel 'ө'. When the vowel-initial ablative suffix '-өөс' is attached, the short vowel in the second syllable drops ('эгшиг гээгдэх ёс'), yielding the correct form 'цөөрмөөс' with the harmonizing feminine suffix '-өөс'.
3Under standardized Cyrillic spelling rules, which case suffix correctly attaches to words whose stems contain only the neutral vowel 'и' (саармаг эгшигтэй үг), such as 'бичиг' (document/writing)?
A.They must take masculine suffixes with 'а' (e.g., 'бичигаар').
B.They take invariable masculine suffixes with 'у' (e.g., 'бичигууд').
C.They are grammatically treated as feminine and take suffixes with 'э' or 'и' (e.g., 'бичгийн', 'бичгээр').
D.They cannot take vowel-bearing case suffixes without an intervening glottal stop.
Explanation: In Mongolian orthography, when a root contains only the neutral vowel 'и' (саармаг эгшиг), the word behaves as a feminine stem (эм үг). Therefore, it attaches feminine suffixes containing 'э' or 'и' (e.g., 'бичгийн', 'бичгээр', 'бичигт').
4What is the primary condition under which a non-first syllable short vowel drops (эгшиг гээгдэх ёс) in Mongolian Cyrillic spelling?
A.When any consonant follows the syllable in writing.
B.Only when the word is placed at the end of an interrogative sentence.
C.When the root is compounded with another noun without inflectional affixes.
D.When a long-vowel suffix or vowel-initial suffix is added to a stem with an unstressed short vowel in an open syllable.
Explanation: The vowel-dropping rule (эгшиг гээгдэх ёс) dictates that when a vowel-initial suffix (often a long-vowel suffix like '-аар/-ээр', '-аас/-ээс', or possessive '-аа/-ээ') is attached to a disyllabic or polysyllabic stem, an unstressed short vowel in the subsequent non-initial open syllable drops (e.g., 'нөхөр' + '-өөс' -> 'нөхрөөс').
What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Winters in Mongolia are always snowy and cold.
B.The grandfather's saddle was very old and needed repair.
C.A horse's condition depends on its owner's care, and Бат came to understand his grandfather's words through his own experience.
D.Horses should never be watered at a river in autumn.
Explanation: The passage moves from the grandfather's saying ('a good horse is made by a good owner') to Бат's winter of careful feeding and sheltering, and ends when the well-kept horse is still strong in spring and Бат finally understands the saying. The main idea links the owner's care to the horse's condition and shows Бат learning from experience.
6According to the Mongolian National Standardized Spelling rules, how must the soft sign (зөөлний тэмдэг 'ь') be transformed when attaching a vowel-initial suffix to stems like 'морь' (horse) or 'хонь' (sheep)?
A.The soft sign is retained and doubled before the suffix (e.g., 'морььтой').
B.The soft sign 'ь' transforms into the vowel letter 'и' (e.g., 'мориор', 'хонинд').
C.The soft sign is deleted completely without adding any vowel (e.g., 'мороор').
D.The soft sign is replaced by the hard sign 'ъ' (e.g., 'моръор').
Explanation: When a vowel-initial suffix is added to a stem ending in a consonant followed by a soft sign 'ь', the soft sign converts into the vowel 'и' to preserve the palatalization of the consonant (e.g., 'морь' -> 'мориор', 'морины'; 'хонь' -> 'хониор', 'хонинд').
7Which of the following verb forms correctly uses the hard sign (хатуугийн тэмдэг 'ъ') to separate a consonant stem from an iotated suffix in a masculine word?
A.явы
B.явье
C.явъя
D.явьэ
Explanation: In masculine verbs (roots with back vowels like 'яв-'), the voluntative/hortative suffix is '-я'. When attaching to a consonant stem, the hard sign 'ъ' must be written before the iotated vowel 'я' to indicate separation without palatalization (e.g., 'явъя', 'оръё', 'болъё').
8Which verb form correctly uses the soft sign (зөөлний тэмдэг 'ь') before an iotated suffix in a feminine verb root ending in a consonant?
A.үзьэ
B.үзъе
C.үзъя
D.үзье
Explanation: In feminine verb stems ending in a consonant (like 'үз-'), the voluntative ending is '-е'. The soft sign 'ь' must precede 'е' (e.g., 'үзье', 'хэлье', 'нээе' [vowel root takes -е directly without sign]), indicating palatalized separation in feminine words.
9When forming the plural of nouns ending in the consonant 'н' with the plural suffix '-д', what morphophonemic rule applies to the final 'н' in words like 'ноён' (lord, official) and 'эзэн' (master, owner)?
A.The final 'н' is dropped before attaching '-д' (e.g., 'ноёд', 'эзэд').
B.The final 'н' is doubled before attaching '-д' (e.g., 'ноённд').
C.The final 'н' shifts to 'г' before attaching '-д' (e.g., 'ноёгд').
D.The suffix '-д' mutates into '-т' while retaining 'н' (e.g., 'ноёнт').
Explanation: Nouns ending in the consonant 'н' drop this terminal consonant when taking the plural suffix '-д' (e.g., 'ноён' -> 'ноёд', 'эзэн' -> 'эзэд', 'хаан' -> 'хаад').
10Which of the following correctly pairs a noun ending in a diphthong with its proper definite accusative case suffix (-ыг, -ийг, -г)?
A.далай -> далайыг
B.далай -> далайг
C.далай -> далайн
D.далай -> далайийг
Explanation: Stems ending in a diphthong (e.g., 'ай', 'ой', 'үй', 'эй') or a long vowel take the consonant-only accusative suffix '-г' (e.g., 'далай' -> 'далайг', 'нохой' -> 'нохойг', 'дүү' -> 'дүүг').
