1In the rules of Tajweed (أحكام التجويد), which ruling applies when a Noon Sakinah (نْ) or Tanween is followed immediately by one of the six throat letters (أ, هـ, ع, ح, غ, خ)?
A.Idgham bi-Ghunnah (الإدغام بغنة)
B.Izhar Halqi (الإظهار الحلقي)
C.Iqlab (الإقلاب)
D.Ikhfa Haqiqi (الإخفاء الحقيقي)
Explanation: Izhar Halqi (clear throat pronunciation) occurs when a Noon Sakinah or Tanween is followed by any of the six guttural throat letters: Hamzah, Ha, 'Ayn, Ha, Ghayn, or Kha (أ, هـ, ع, ح, غ, خ). In this case, the reciter pronounces the Noon clearly and distinctly from its makhraj without nasal elongation (Ghunnah).
2Which set of Arabic letters triggers complete assimilation with nasalization (Idgham bi-Ghunnah - الإدغام بغنة) when following a Noon Sakinah or Tanween between two separate words?
A.Ra and Lam (ر, ل)
B.Letters of Yanmu: Ya, Noon, Meem, and Waw (ي, ن, م, و)
C.Letters of Qalqalah: Qaf, Ta, Ba, Jeem, and Dal (ق, ط, ب, ج, د)
D.Throat letters: Hamzah, Ha, Ayn, Ha, Ghayn, and Kha (ء, هـ, ع, ح, غ, خ)
Explanation: Idgham bi-Ghunnah (assimilation with nasalization) is governed by the four letters grouped in the mnemonic 'Yanmu' (ي, ن, م, و). When a Noon Sakinah or Tanween precedes one of these letters across word boundaries, the sound merges into the succeeding letter accompanied by a prolonged two-count nasal resonance (Ghunnah).
3What phonetic transformation takes place in the rule of Iqlab (الإقلاب) when a Noon Sakinah or Tanween precedes the letter Ba (ب)?
A.The Noon is merged completely into the Ba with a shadda and no ghunnah.
B.The Noon is completely deleted without leaving any trace of nasality.
C.The Noon is converted into a hidden Meem (م) with Ghunnah and slight relaxation of the lips.
D.The Noon is pronounced clearly from its own point of articulation without ghunnah.
Explanation: Iqlab literally means inversion or conversion. In Tajweed nomenclature, it refers to changing the sound of Noon Sakinah or Tanween into a concealed Meem (م مخفاة) with Ghunnah when followed by the letter Ba (ب), as in the phrase 'مِنْ بَعْدِ' pronounced 'Mim-ba'di'.
4Under the rules governing Meem Sakinah (أحكام الميم الساكنة), what rule occurs when a unvowelled Meem (مْ) is followed immediately by the letter Ba (ب)?
A.Izhar Halqi (الإظهار الحلقي)
B.Idgham Muthlayn Saghir (إدغام مثلين صغير)
C.Izhar Shafawi (الإظهار الشفوي)
D.Ikhfa Shafawi (الإخفاء الشفوي)
Explanation: Meem Sakinah has three primary rules: Idgham Mithlayn when followed by Meem, Ikhfa Shafawi (labial concealment) when followed by Ba (ب), and Izhar Shafawi when followed by any of the remaining 26 letters. When Meem Sakinah meets Ba, the Meem is concealed at the lips with Ghunnah.
5In the sciences of the Quran (علوم القرآن), what is the most authoritative and widely accepted criterion defining a Surah or Ayah as Makki (مكي) versus Madani (مدني)?
A.The chronological criterion: whatever was revealed prior to the Hijrah is Makki, and whatever was revealed after the Hijrah is Madani, regardless of location.
B.The geographical criterion: whatever was revealed within the borders of Makkah is Makki, and whatever was revealed within Madinah is Madani.
C.The audience criterion: whatever addresses 'O mankind' is Makki, and whatever addresses 'O you who believe' is Madani.
D.The stylistic criterion: whatever contains short verses is Makki, and whatever contains long legal verses is Madani.
Explanation: According to the majority of Quranic scholars (such as al-Zarkashi and al-Suyuti), the primary, definitive criterion is temporal: revelation preceding the Prophet's emigration (al-Hijrah) to Madinah is classified as Makki, whereas revelation sent down following the Hijrah is Madani, even if revealed in Makkah during the Conquest (Fath Makkah) or the Farewell Pilgrimage.
6What was the fundamental distinction between the compilation of the Quran (جمع القرآن) under Caliph Abu Bakr al-Siddiq and the compilation under Caliph Uthman ibn Affan?
A.Abu Bakr restricted the Quran to the dialect of Quraysh, while Uthman permitted recitation across all regional dialects of Arabia.
B.Abu Bakr standardized the vocalic diacritical marks (Tashkeel), while Uthman arranged the verses into their current chronological order of revelation.
C.Abu Bakr commissioned the memorization of the Quran by heart, while Uthman authorized the very first written recording of revelation.
D.Abu Bakr gathered scattered written fragments into a single bound collection (Suhuf) for preservation, while Uthman standardized the text onto a unified dialectal orthography (Rasm) to eliminate regional dissension.
Explanation: Abu Bakr's compilation was motivated by the martyrdom of numerous Huffaz at the Battle of al-Yamamah, aiming to unite all authentic verses between two covers into the Suhuf entrusted to Hafsah. Uthman's initiative, prompted by Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman's alarm over variant pronunciations during military campaigns, united the Muslim Ummah on a single standardized orthographic codex (al-Mushaf al-Imam) written in the Qurayshi idiom, copying it to imperial garrison cities.
7In the study of articulation points (مخارج الحروف), from which specific region of the throat (الحلق) do the letters Ghayn (غ) and Kha (خ) originate?
A.Aqsa al-Halq (أقصى الحلق) — deepest throat near the vocal cords
B.Wasat al-Halq (وسط الحلق) — middle throat near the epiglottis
C.Adna al-Halq (أدنى الحلق) — closest throat nearest to the mouth
D.Aqsa al-Lisan (أقصى اللسان) — back of the tongue near the uvula
Explanation: The throat has three specific articulation points: Aqsa al-Halq (deepest throat) produces Hamzah (ء) and Ha (هـ); Wasat al-Halq (middle throat) produces 'Ayn (ع) and Ha (ح); and Adna al-Halq (closest part of the throat nearest the oral cavity) produces Ghayn (غ) and Kha (خ).
8Which intrinsic characteristic of Arabic letters (صفات الحروف) denotes the continuation of breath upon articulation, encompassed in the classical mnemonic 'فحثه شخص سكت' (Fa-hath-thahu shakhsun sakat)?
A.Al-Jahr (الجهر)
B.Al-Hams (الهمس)
C.Al-Shiddah (الشدة)
D.Al-Istifal (الاستفال)
Explanation: Al-Hams (whisper) is the phonetic attribute where breath continues to flow freely during the emission of a letter due to the opening of the vocal cords and weakness in its point of reliance. The ten letters of Hams are combined in Ibn al-Jazari's phrase 'فحثه شخص سكت' (F, H, Th, H, Sh, Kh, S, S, K, T). Its opposite is al-Jahr.
9What is the Tajweed ruling and required elongation when a Madd letter (حرف مد) is followed by a Hamzah (ء) in the SAME single word (e.g., 'جَاءَ' or 'السَّمَاءِ')?
A.Madd 'Arid li-al-Sukoon (المد العارض للسكون), permissible at 2, 4, or 6 counts only when stopping
B.Madd Ja'iz Munfasil (المد الجائز المنفصل), permissible to shorten to 2 counts or elongate to 4 counts
C.Madd Badal (مد البدل), fixed universally at exactly 2 counts
D.Madd Wajib Muttasil (المد الواجب المتصل), which must be lengthened beyond two counts
Explanation: When a letter of elongation (Alif, Waw or Ya) is followed by a Hamzah within the same word, it is Madd Wajib Muttasil (the obligatory connected madd). All readers lengthen it beyond the natural two counts—commonly four or five counts, depending on the riwayah and its route—and it may reach six when stopping on a final Hamzah.
10In the word 'الصَّاخَّةُ' or 'الضَّالِّينَ', what specific type of elongation occurs, and what is its compulsory duration across all Quranic recitations?
A.Madd Tabee'i (المد الطبيعي), fixed at 2 Harakat
B.Madd Lazim Harfi Mukhaffaf (المد اللازم الحرفي المخفف), compulsory for 4 Harakat
C.Madd Lazim Kalimi Muthaqqal (المد اللازم الكلمي المثقل), compulsory for 6 Harakat
D.Madd Leen 'Arid (مد اللين العارض), optional at 2, 4, or 6 Harakat
Explanation: Madd Lazim Kalimi Muthaqqal (Compulsory Heavy Word Madd) occurs when an original letter of elongation is followed immediately in the same word by a permanent Sukoon that is assimilated into a doubled letter (Mushaddad). By scholastic consensus of all ten Qira'at readers, its elongation is mandatory for a full six Harakat.
