About the LC Mandarin Chinese Exam
Leaving Certificate Mandarin Chinese is an ab initio senior-cycle foreign language subject for learners from all language backgrounds, including primarily non-native speakers. The NCCA specification is designed for a minimum of 180 hours of class contact time and is informed by CEFR educational aims at a broad Pre-A1/A1 pitch. It has two inter-related strands: Communicative language competence, and Plurilingual and pluricultural competence. Learners develop tones, Hanyu Pinyin, simplified-character literacy, basic grammar/particles, everyday communication and intercultural awareness, supported by a Language Portfolio over two years. Certification is through three SEC components—oral, aural and written—with differentiated mark allocations at Higher and Ordinary level. For 2026, the oral includes three SEC-published set topics as well as wider themes and portfolio texts, while written production has increased internal choice.
