About the JC French Exam
Junior Cycle French is Ireland's lower-secondary French qualification for third-year students (around age 15), examined by the State Examinations Commission under the NCCA Junior Cycle Modern Foreign Languages specification. French shares the common MFL framework with other modern languages. Learning is organised in three strands: communicative competence; language awareness; and socio-cultural knowledge and intercultural awareness. Students work toward basic-user proficiency (broadly CEFR A1–A2). French is examined at Common Level only. Students build a Student Language Portfolio, complete CBA 1 (Oral Communication) towards the end of second year and CBA 2 (Student Language Portfolio) at the end of the first term in third year, and take a single SEC final examination of up to two hours that includes an aural stimulus (aural 35%). The specification provides for an Assessment Task linked to CBA 2 (10%), but for the 2026, 2027 and 2028 sittings the Assessment Task is not examined and the SEC grade descriptor is based on the written examination only; students complete a minimum of one CBA. The 2017 MFL specification is in force for sittings through 2028; a revised 2025 specification applies to first-year students from September 2026.
