1In the plate tectonics model, what happens mainly at a constructive (divergent) plate boundary?
A.New crust is formed as plates move apart
B.Two plates slide past each other horizontally
C.Oceanic crust is destroyed by subduction
D.Continental crust is folded into fold mountains only
Explanation: At constructive (divergent) boundaries, plates move apart and magma rises to create new crust, as along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Ireland's Antrim basalts relate to Atlantic opening in the geological past.
2Which layer of the Earth is broken into the lithospheric plates that move in plate tectonics?
A.Inner core only
B.Rigid outer shell of crust and uppermost mantle
C.Outer core only
D.Entire mantle including the asthenosphere as one solid plate
Explanation: Lithospheric plates are pieces of the rigid outer shell made of crust and the uppermost mantle. They move over the weaker asthenosphere beneath.
3Which rock type forms from the cooling and solidification of magma or lava?
A.Sedimentary
B.Metamorphic only by heat without melting
C.Igneous
D.Organic soil horizon
Explanation: Igneous rocks form when magma or lava cools and solidifies. Plutonic examples cool slowly underground (granite); volcanic examples cool at the surface (basalt).
4Limestone that was once sea-floor sediment and later became rock is classified as which main rock type?
A.Igneous volcanic
B.Igneous plutonic
C.Metamorphic gneiss
D.Sedimentary
Explanation: Limestone is a sedimentary rock, commonly formed from calcium carbonate remains of marine organisms or chemical precipitation, later compacted and cemented.
5Marble is formed when limestone is altered by heat and pressure. What rock group does marble belong to?
A.Metamorphic
B.Igneous
C.Sedimentary
D.Unconsolidated alluvium
Explanation: Marble is a metamorphic rock produced when limestone is recrystallised by heat and/or pressure without melting completely. Metamorphism changes existing rocks in the rock cycle.
6Physical (mechanical) weathering breaks rock into smaller pieces. Which process is a clear example of physical weathering?
A.Carbonation of limestone by weak carbonic acid
B.Freeze-thaw action when water freezes in cracks
C.Solution of rock minerals by rainwater only without ice
D.Oxidation of iron-rich minerals producing rust
Explanation: Freeze-thaw is physical weathering: water in joints freezes, expands and pries rock apart. No chemical change of minerals is required for the rock to break.
7Karst landscapes develop mainly on which rock type because it is soluble in slightly acidic water?
A.Granite
B.Basalt
C.Limestone
D.Obsidian
Explanation: Limestone (calcium carbonate) dissolves through carbonation in rainwater charged with carbon dioxide, producing karst features such as swallow holes, caves and limestone pavement.
8Which river process involves the wearing away of the river bed and banks by the force of moving water and the load it carries?
A.Deposition
B.Evapotranspiration
C.Condensation
D.Erosion
Explanation: Erosion is the wearing away of the landscape by a moving agent. A river erodes its bed and banks by hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition and solution.
9A V-shaped valley is most typically associated with which surface process system?
A.Fluvial erosion in the upper course of a river
B.Coastal wave deposition on a spit
C.Wind deposition of a sand dune only
D.Glacial deposition of a terminal moraine
Explanation: In the upper course, vertical erosion by a river and weathering of valley sides produce a characteristic V-shaped valley with interlocking spurs.
10Which coastal landform is created mainly by longshore drift depositing sediment in open water?
A.Wave-cut platform
B.Spit
C.Sea stack
D.Blowhole
Explanation: A spit is a depositional ridge of sand or shingle built by longshore drift into a bay or estuary. Wave-cut platforms, stacks and blowholes are erosional features.

About the LC Geography Exam

Leaving Certificate Geography is a senior-cycle subject in Ireland, examined by the State Examinations Commission (SEC) at Higher and Ordinary Level. The current syllabus is organised as three compulsory core units (physical environment; regional geography; geographical investigation and skills), one elective chosen from economic activities or the human environment, and — for Higher Level only — one optional unit from global interdependence, geoecology, culture and identity, or the atmosphere-ocean environment. Assessment is 80% terminal written examination (2 hours 30 minutes, 400 marks) and 20% Geographical Investigation report (100 marks) based on an annual SEC prescribed list of topics. The real papers use short answers, multi-part structured questions and essay-style option questions rather than multiple choice. The current syllabus is examinable through June 2027; a revised specification is introduced for fifth-year students from September 2026. This free bank supplies original single-best-answer concept practice across the core content, electives and optional themes.

Exam sponsor: State Examinations Commission (SEC), Ireland. The requirements and fees below concern the certification or admission exam, separate from our free practice resources.

Assessment

Terminal written paper (80%, 400 marks) at Higher or Ordinary Level plus Geographical Investigation report (20%, 100 marks; 500 marks total). Higher Level written paper typically includes short questions on the core, structured questions on Core Units 1 and 2, one elective (Economic or Human), and one optional-unit essay. Ordinary Level covers short questions, core structured questions and one elective. Skills (maps, photos, graphs, statistics) are integrated throughout.

Time Limit

Written examination: 2 hours 30 minutes. The Geographical Investigation report is completed during the course and submitted by the SEC deadline (for 2026 candidates, submission to the teacher by 17 April 2026 on the annual prescribed topic list).

Passing Score

No single pass mark. Results use Higher Level H1-H8 and Ordinary Level O1-O8 percentage bands (H1/O1 90-100% down to H8/O8 below 30% in the lowest band). CAO points are awarded from H6/O6 upward; many third-level courses set subject-specific minimum grades.

Exam / Certification Fees

In 2026 the Leaving Certificate examination entry fee is EUR 116 for a school-based candidate (EUR 301 for a school-going repeat candidate); full medical card holders (or dependents covered on a full medical card) are exempt. The fee covers all subjects entered, not Geography alone.

LC Geography: Suggested Study Strategy

1Complete your Geographical Investigation carefully against the SEC prescribed structure: strong primary data gathering and honest evaluation often secure high marks for relatively little exam-day risk.
2Learn one clear Irish, European and continental/sub-continental regional case study set so you can link physical processes, economy, population and development under time pressure.
3Practise OS map and aerial photograph skills weekly — grid references, scale, sketch maps, land-use and photo orientation appear across short and structured questions.
4For physical geography, be able to explain processes with labelled diagrams (for example river erosion, coastal deposition, glacial landforms) rather than only naming features.
5If you take Higher Level, prepare full essay plans for your optional unit with SRPs (significant relevant points) and overall coherence, not just bullet definitions.
6Use SEC past papers and marking schemes for long-form practice; use this bank for quick concept checks and to plug gaps before timed paper practice.
