About the LC Construction Studies Exam

Leaving Certificate Construction Studies is an Irish senior-cycle subject that introduces construction technology, materials and processes for domestic buildings, combining theory, drawing, workshop craft and a substantial project. It is assessed by the State Examinations Commission at Higher and Ordinary Level through three components: a written paper (including compulsory drawing), a practical skills test, and project/coursework assessment. Content spans planning and site work, foundations, walls, floors, roofs, windows and doors, stairs, services (water, heating, drainage, basic electrical), heat and U-values, sound and light at Higher Level, timber and concrete technology, and environmental considerations. The current Construction Studies syllabus remains examined through June 2027. A redeveloped Leaving Certificate Construction Technology specification is introduced for fifth-year students from September 2026 and will replace Construction Studies for subsequent cohorts.

Assessment

Three parts: Part I written examination (Ordinary Level 200 marks; Higher Level 300 marks) including a compulsory drawing question; Part II practical test (150 marks); Part III assessment of workshop/laboratory work and project (150 marks). The subject grade is based on the aggregate of all three parts.

The written paper is sat in the June Leaving Certificate examination period (confirm duration on the current SEC timetable). The practical test is a timed SEC workshop assessment; the project is completed during fifth and sixth year.

Do I need to practise U-value calculations?

Yes at Higher Level especially. You should be able to find layer resistances R = d/λ, include surface resistances, compute U = 1/ΣR, and use Q = U × A × ΔT for heat loss. Ordinary Level focuses more on principles and effects of insulation.

Are these official State Examinations Commission questions?

No. These are original OpenExamPrep single-best-answer concept questions based on the syllabus topics. SEC publishes official past papers and marking schemes separately. You should also practise full written, drawing, practical and project work.

What topics appear most often in the written paper?
