About the LC Art Exam
Leaving Certificate Art (Ireland) is a senior-cycle subject that develops learners' ability to research, create and respond to their own work and the work of others. Under the revised NCCA specification (first examined 2023), assessment has three SEC components: Practical Coursework (50%), an Invigilated Practical Examination (20%) and a written Visual Studies paper (30%). Visual Studies is organised around three content areas — Europe and the wider world, Ireland and its place in the wider world, and Today's world — studied using six framework elements: Context; Artists and Artworks; Analysis; Art Elements and Design Principles; Media and Areas of Practice; and Innovation and Invention. For the written paper, students deepen one section of focus in Content Area 1 and one in Content Area 2, and study all four Today's world sections of focus (Artists: Theory and Thinking; Artists: Processes and Media; Art as Social Commentary or Commentator; Art and the Environment). Time Limit
Written Visual Studies paper lasts 2 hours 30 minutes. Invigilated practical examination lasts 5 hours on a single day. Practical coursework runs over the SEC-issued brief window in Year 2 (commonly about 12 weeks, with final coursework deadlines published annually).
Passing Score
No fixed pass mark for the subject. Results are reported on the H1-H8 scale at Higher Level and O1-O8 at Ordinary Level (10% bands from 90-100% down). A grade of H6/O6 or higher typically attracts CAO points from that subject among the candidate's best six.
