About the LC Ag Science Exam

Leaving Certificate Agricultural Science is an Irish senior-cycle science subject administered by the State Examinations Commission and studied over two years under the NCCA specification (introduced September 2019). It is the study of the science and technology underlying modern agriculture, with emphasis on sustainable use of land, plants and animals. The course has four strands: Scientific practices (overarching investigation skills, safety and how science contributes to agriculture); Soils (formation, classification, physical/chemical/biological properties and management); Crops (plant physiology, classification, establishment, management and harvesting of grass and other crops); and Animals (physiology, classification, production systems, husbandry and health for cattle, sheep and other farm animals). Eight cross-cutting themes permeate the strands: health and safety, technology, breeding and genetics, food production, nutrition, policy and economics, sustainability and environment. Assessment is 75% written examination (2.5 hours; short, structured and synoptic questions) and 25% Individual Investigative Study coursework based on an annual SEC thematic brief. Results use the H1-H8 / O1-O8 grade scales for CAO points.
