About the JC Spanish Exam
Junior Cycle Spanish is Ireland's lower-secondary Spanish qualification for third-year students (around age 15), set by the State Examinations Commission under the NCCA Junior Cycle Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) specification. Spanish shares a common MFL approach with French, German and Italian. The course aims to develop communicative language proficiency broadly aligned with CEFR A1–A2 (basic user), alongside language awareness and socio-cultural/intercultural awareness. Students sit a Common Level final written examination (typically up to about two hours) with structured tasks rather than a fixed multiple-choice bank, and complete Classroom-Based Assessments during the cycle. Spanish is examined at Common Level only.
