About the JC Mathematics Exam

Junior Cycle Mathematics is the lower-secondary mathematics qualification in Ireland, taken by third-year students (around age 15) and set by the State Examinations Commission. The course is built on five strands - Statistics & Probability, Geometry & Trigonometry, Number, Algebra and Functions - together with a unifying strand that develops problem solving, reasoning and communication across all topics. Students take a single terminal written examination at Higher or Ordinary Level, lasting two hours, in which they may use a calculator and the official Formulae and Tables booklet. The Higher Level paper is marked out of 270 marks. Two Classroom-Based Assessments and a written Assessment Task are completed earlier in the cycle and are reported alongside the examination grade. Results are reported using descriptors rather than a simple pass mark.
