About the JC Italian Exam
Junior Cycle Italian is Ireland’s lower-secondary Italian modern foreign language subject, taken by third-year students (around age 15) under the common Junior Cycle Modern Foreign Languages specification (French, German, Italian and Spanish). The NCCA specification is organised in three integrated strands — communicative competence, language awareness, and socio-cultural knowledge and intercultural awareness — and aims to develop communicative language proficiency broadly aligned with CEFR A1–A2 (basic user). Italian is examined at Common Level only. Students build a Student Language Portfolio, complete CBA 1 (Oral Communication) towards the end of second year and CBA 2 (Student Language Portfolio) at the end of the first term in third year, and take a single SEC final examination of up to two hours that includes an aural stimulus (aural 35%).
