About the JC German Exam
Junior Cycle German is Ireland’s lower-secondary German qualification for third-year students (around age 15), examined by the State Examinations Commission under the NCCA Junior Cycle Modern Foreign Languages specification shared with French, Italian and Spanish. Learning aims to develop communicative language proficiency broadly aligned with CEFR A1–A2 (basic user), alongside language awareness and socio-cultural/intercultural knowledge of German-speaking communities. Students complete Classroom-Based Assessments during the cycle and sit a common-level final examination with aural (listening) and written components. German is examined at Common Level only. Students build a Student Language Portfolio, complete CBA 1 (Oral Communication) towards the end of second year and CBA 2 (Student Language Portfolio) at the end of the first term in third year, and take a single SEC final examination of up to two hours that includes an aural stimulus (aural 35%). The specification provides for an Assessment Task linked to CBA 2 (10%), but for the 2026, 2027 and 2028 sittings the Assessment Task is not examined and the SEC grade descriptor is based on the written examination only; students complete a minimum of one CBA.
