1Which layer of the Earth is broken into moving tectonic plates?
A.Inner core only
B.Rigid outer shell of crust and uppermost mantle
C.Entire liquid outer core
D.Atmosphere only
Explanation: Tectonic plates are pieces of the lithosphere — the rigid outer shell of crust plus uppermost mantle — that move over the weaker asthenosphere.
2What mainly happens at a constructive (divergent) plate boundary?
A.New crust forms as plates move apart
B.Oceanic crust is destroyed by subduction
C.Two plates slide past each other only
D.Continents fold into mountains only
Explanation: At constructive (divergent) boundaries plates move apart and magma rises, creating new crust, as along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
3Which rock type forms when magma or lava cools and solidifies?
A.Sedimentary
B.Igneous
C.Metamorphic only
D.Peat
Explanation: Igneous rocks form from cooling magma (underground) or lava (at the surface). Granite and basalt are common examples.
4Limestone that formed from sea-floor remains is classified as which main rock type?
A.Igneous volcanic
B.Igneous plutonic
C.Sedimentary
D.Metamorphic gneiss
Explanation: Limestone is a sedimentary rock, often formed from calcium carbonate remains of marine organisms that were compacted and cemented.
5What is weathering in physical geography?
A.The breakdown of rock in place by physical or chemical processes
B.The transport of rock fragments by a river only
C.The melting of ice sheets only
D.The building of new mountains only
Explanation: Weathering is the breakdown of rock in situ by physical (mechanical) or chemical processes. Erosion then transports the loosened material.
6Which process describes a river wearing away its bed and banks?
A.Deposition
B.Erosion
C.Condensation
D.Precipitation
Explanation: River erosion is the wearing away of the bed and banks by hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition and solution.
7Which landform is typically found in the upper course of a river?
A.Wide flood plain with meanders only
B.V-shaped valley and waterfalls
C.Large delta only
D.Oxbow lake only
Explanation: In the upper course, steep gradients and vertical erosion create V-shaped valleys, interlocking spurs, waterfalls and rapids.
8What is hydraulic action at the coast?
A.Waves dissolving rock chemically only
B.The force of water and compressed air cracking rock in joints
C.Waves depositing sand on a beach only
D.Wind moving sand inland only
Explanation: Hydraulic action is the force of waves and compressed air in cracks and joints that weakens and breaks rock.
9Which instrument is used to measure air pressure?
A.Anemometer
B.Barometer
C.Hygrometer
D.Rain gauge
Explanation: A barometer measures atmospheric pressure. Falling pressure often signals approaching unsettled weather.
10Ireland's climate is best described as which type?
A.Hot desert climate
B.Tropical rainforest climate
C.Temperate oceanic (mild and moist)
D.Polar ice-cap climate
Explanation: Ireland has a temperate oceanic climate: mild winters, cool summers, and rainfall distributed through the year, strongly influenced by the Atlantic.

About the JC Geography Exam

Junior Cycle Geography is the lower-secondary Geography qualification in Ireland, taken by third-year students (around age 15) and set by the State Examinations Commission at Common Level. The NCCA specification is organised around three strands — Exploring the physical world; Exploring how we interact with the physical world; and Exploring people, place and change — with geographical skills such as Ordnance Survey map reading and aerial photograph interpretation woven through the course. Students sit a single terminal written examination of about two hours, typically with short and longer structured questions. Classroom-Based Assessments completed earlier in the cycle are reported separately. Results use descriptor grades rather than a simple pass mark. This free bank supplies original single-best-answer concept practice across physical and human geography, sustainability and map/photo skills, with Ireland-focused examples.

Exam sponsor: State Examinations Commission (SEC), Ireland. The requirements and fees below concern the certification or admission exam, separate from our free practice resources.

Assessment

One Common Level terminal written examination (about 2 hours) covering all three strands and skills (maps, aerial photographs and other sources). Classroom-Based Assessments completed earlier in junior cycle are reported separately. The real paper uses short and long written questions rather than multiple choice.

Time Limit

The final written examination is about 2 hours at Common Level.

Passing Score

There is no pass or fail mark. Final examination results are reported as descriptors: Distinction, Higher Merit, Merit, Achieved, Partially Achieved and Not Graded, based on the percentage of marks gained.

Exam / Certification Fees

In 2026 the Junior Cycle examination entry fee is EUR 109 for a school-based candidate; full medical card holders (or dependents covered on a full medical card) are exempt. The fee covers all subjects entered, not Geography alone.

Practice covers population change and structure, migration, rural and urban settlement, economic activities (primary, secondary and tertiary), development and inequality, and how places change over time.

15%

Geographical skills

Practice covers four- and six-figure grid references, scale and distance, OS map symbols and height, direction, sketch maps, and interpreting aerial photographs (orientation, land use and evidence).

JC Geography: Suggested Study Strategy

1Practise OS map skills weekly: four- and six-figure grid references, scale, symbols, height and sketch maps appear often and score well with methodical work.
2Learn processes with labelled diagrams for rivers, coasts, weathering and tectonic settings rather than only memorising feature names.
3Use clear Irish examples (for example the Burren limestone, Atlantic coasts, Dublin urban change, peatlands and renewable energy) so answers sound place-specific.
4Link physical and human ideas: flooding, coastal defence, farming and climate change questions often expect both process and people impacts.
5When reading aerial photographs, start with orientation, scale clues and land-use evidence before jumping to conclusions.
6Use SEC past papers for long-form timing practice; use this bank for quick concept checks and to plug gaps before timed paper practice.
