Key Facts: Érettségi Francia Exam

A current living-foreign-language subject assessed at CEFR B1 at középszint and B2 at emelt szint.

Administered centrally by the Oktatási Hivatal (Educational Authority) twice per year (May–June spring session and October–November autumn session).

Offered at two proficiency levels: Középszint corresponds to CEFR B1; Emelt szint corresponds to CEFR B2.

The középszint written exam lasts 180 minutes across four separate papers (Reading, Grammar, Listening, Writing) for 117 points, plus a 15-minute oral exam for 33 points (total 150 points).

The emelt szint written exam lasts 240 minutes (120 points) followed by a 20-minute oral examination (30 points; total 150 points).

A.Emprunter un livre au guichet
B.Rendre un livre dans la boîte extérieure

A.Tous les visiteurs entrent gratuitement.
B.Les moins de dix-huit ans doivent acheter un billet plein tarif.

B.ai lu / sonnait
C.lirai / sonne
D.lis / avait sonné

Érettségi Francia: Suggested Study Strategy

1Practice with official past papers: Download and solve past exam papers from the Oktatási Hivatal website (oktatas.hu) from 2017 to 2025 to familiarize yourself with task types, question wording, and timing constraints.
2Master the passé composé versus imparfait distinction: Train yourself to identify narrative triggers (dates, sudden events, sequence of actions for passé composé vs. ongoing backdrop, habitual actions, descriptions, weather, and physical/emotional states for imparfait).
3Consolidate pronoun placement and past participle agreement: Create flashcards for double pronoun placement rules (e.g., me/te/se/nous/vous before le/la/les before lui/leur before y before en) and remember that preceding direct objects (COD) trigger agreement with avoir.
4Memorize high-frequency subjunctive triggers: The subjonctif is essential for top marks at both levels. Ensure you know verbs of emotion (avoir peur que, être triste que), volition (vouloir que, exiger que), necessity (il faut que, il est nécessaire que), and conjunctions (bien que, pour que, sans que).
5Develop listening comprehension with authentic media: Listen daily to short French radio broadcasts and podcasts designed for learners, such as RFI 'Journal en français facile', TV5MONDE '7 jours sur la planète', and 1jour1actu to tune your ear to native French rhythm, liaison, and elision.
6Build a repertoire of formal written formulas: For the Production écrite component, memorize standard French opening and closing formulas (e.g., 'Veuillez agréer, Madame, Monsieur, l'expression de mes salutations distinguées') and transition connectors (d'abord, en outre, néanmoins, en revanche, par conséquent).
7Expand topic-based vocabulary systematically: The Érettségi syllabus focuses heavily on themes such as youth culture, modern technologies, environmental protection, healthy lifestyles, tourism, and school-to-work transitions. Build active vocabulary sheets for each topic.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the two levels of the Hungarian Érettségi French examination?

The examination is offered at two levels: középszint (intermediate level), which assesses CEFR B1, and emelt szint (advanced level), which assesses CEFR B2. Both levels include reading, language-in-use, listening, writing, and oral components; individual higher-education programmes determine how an examination result is used for admission.

How is the középszint French written examination structured and timed?

The középszint written exam lasts a total of 180 minutes and is divided into four strictly timed parts: 1) Compréhension écrite (Reading Comprehension) — 60 minutes (33 points); 2) Structure de la langue (Language in Use / Grammar) — 30 minutes (18 points); 3) Compréhension de l'oral (Listening Comprehension) — approximately 30 minutes (33 points); and 4) Production écrite (Written Production / Essay & Letter) — 60 minutes (33 points). There are short breaks between the sections, and papers from each section are collected before the next section begins.

What passing score and grading thresholds apply to the French Érettségi?

A candidate needs at least 25% overall. At középszint they also need 12% in the written part and 12% in the oral part; at emelt szint they need 12% in each of reading, language in use, listening, writing, and speaking. Középszint grades are 25–39% = 2, 40–59% = 3, 60–79% = 4, and 80–100% = 5. Emelt szint grades are 25–32% = 2, 33–46% = 3, 47–59% = 4, and 60–100% = 5.

Are dictionaries permitted during any part of the French Érettségi exam?

During the középszint written examination, printed bilingual or monolingual dictionaries are permitted ONLY during Part IV: Production écrite (Written Production). Dictionaries are strictly prohibited during Reading Comprehension, Language in Use, and Listening Comprehension. At emelt szint, a printed dictionary is likewise allowed solely during the extended writing task (Production écrite). Electronic dictionaries and smartphones are strictly forbidden in all parts of the examination.

What takes place during the French oral examination (Épreuve orale)?

At középszint, the oral examination lasts approximately 15 minutes and is evaluated out of 33 points. The candidate engages in three communicative tasks: a general conversational warm-up (entretien dirigé), an interactive situation/role-play (jeu de rôle) where candidate and examiner resolve a practical scenario, and an individual monologue based on visual and textual prompts (exposé à partir d'images). At emelt szint, the oral exam lasts 20 minutes (30 points), requiring higher-level argumentative presentation, debate, and abstract opinion formulation on societal topics.

What are the most frequent grammatical pitfalls tested in the Structure de la langue section?

The most common grammatical challenges include: 1) aspectual selection between the passé composé and the imparfait in past narrative contexts; 2) past participle agreement rules (especially when preceding direct object pronouns precede verbs conjugated with avoir, or reflexive verbs); 3) correct choice between adverbial pronouns 'y' and 'en' and pronoun ordering (e.g., 'je le lui donne' vs. 'donne-le-moi'); 4) distinguishing relative pronouns 'qui', 'que', 'dont', and 'où'; and 5) recognizing triggers for the subjonctif présent versus the indicatif.

How do NAT 2020 and 100/1997 Korm. rendelet regulate the French Érettségi?

The current detailed living-foreign-language requirement defines communicative competencies, task components, durations, points, and CEFR levels: B1 at középszint and B2 at emelt szint.
