Frequently Asked Questions
Is the DELE A2 required for Spanish nationality?
Yes. Since October 2015, applicants for Spanish nationality from countries where Spanish is not an official language must pass the DELE A2 (or a higher DELE level) to prove basic Spanish proficiency. Applicants from Spanish-speaking countries are exempt from this language requirement. The DELE A2 is taken together with the CCSE test on Spanish constitutional and sociocultural knowledge.
How is the DELE A2 exam structured?
The DELE A2 has four sections: Reading comprehension (60 minutes), Listening comprehension (about 40 minutes), Writing (about 45 minutes) and Speaking (about 12-15 minutes plus preparation time). The first three written sections are taken together on the same day, with a short break, and the oral exam may be on the same day or a nearby date.
What score do I need to pass the DELE A2?
Each of the four sections is worth 25 points. The sections are grouped into Group 1 (Reading and Writing) and Group 2 (Listening and Speaking), each worth 50 points. You must score at least 30 of 50 in each group, for a minimum total of 60 of 100 points. The final result is reported simply as APTO (pass) or NO APTO (fail).
How much does the DELE A2 exam cost?
The DELE A2 fee is roughly EUR 130-138, although the exact amount varies by examination centre and country. Registration and payment are made online through the Instituto Cervantes website at examenes.cervantes.es. The separate CCSE nationality test costs around EUR 85 and is registered the same way.
Does the DELE A2 diploma expire?
No. Once you are awarded a DELE diploma it is valid permanently and never expires. This is different from the CCSE certificate. For a Spanish nationality application you submit the DELE A2 diploma (or proof of having passed) together with your other documents.
What level of Spanish is CEFR A2?
A2 is the second level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. An A2 speaker can understand frequently used everyday expressions, describe their background and immediate surroundings in simple terms, and handle short routine exchanges such as shopping, asking directions and basic conversations.
